Sources - Panthers to hire Buccaneers' Dave Canales as coach​

The Carolina Panthers plan to hire Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive Dave Canales as their new head coach, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Panthers have offered him the job and Canales is taking it. "It will get done," a source told Schefter.

Canales, 42, finished his first season as the Buccaneers' offensive coordinator in 2023. Quarterback Baker Mayfield had his best professional season in Canales' offense, setting career bests in yards (4,044), touchdowns (28) and interceptions (10).

Canales came to the Buccaneers from the Seattle Seahawks. He and new Panthers general manager Dan Morgan spent eight years together in Seattle from 2010-2017.

Yes you can still block lateral moves, however, you cannot block someone from going from QB Coach to OC anymore.

Why would you want control of your staff to build continuity...

The Panthers new GM Dan Morgan worked with Canales for several years in Seattle so there is that, but IMO, Bryce Young is too small IMO, but we shall see as Canales has his work cut out for him.

The prob with some of these hires is they're gonna come with unknowns at that other coordinator spot. Coaching's a group lift. And then a young coordinator type with a prick of an owner seems like a bad mix. But maybe Tepper is going to learn from his mistakes.
