As far as offensive coordinators go, I sure miss Kevin O'Connell. When the Vikings poached him after the Rams' Super Bowl win, I was on as record saying on this forum that I would not have minded at all if we fired Sean McVay, fresh off his Super Bowl win and all, to give O'Connell a shot and not lose him. I am still not sure that would not have been the right move. He continues to work wonders in Minnesota. A lot of the Vikings' passing game schematics remind me of McVay but I feel O'Connell does a much better job managing players personalities' and has a better feel for the "flow" of a game. Not that McVay is not a great coach. It sure would have be ironic to move off McVay that way, if nothing else, as Sean himself is known to be ruthlessly cut throat, not accepting very good if great is available, e.g. trading Goff for Stafford.

I'd keep McVay for now, definitely. I don't think a better alternative is out there, like I thought might well be the case with O'Connell (who I basically see as McVay without the arrogance in both personality and play calling). Then again, I don't follow other teams closely enough to know about their coordinators in detail, like I did the Rams with O'Connell, so who knows. The OC in Detroit is getting a lot of hype.

McVay is a very good coach to be sure, just overrated IMO. He is not someone you move off of easily, as upgrading will be difficult. If a move is made. with a coach of his caliber, it is usually out of necessity rather than seeking an upgrade (e.g. Sean opts to stop coaching, or he loses the room and you simply need a new voice, etc.). I would take Reid, Shanahan, O'Connell, and Harbaugh before McVay, personally. I'd rank McVay more or less on par and in the same tier with Pederson, Tomlin, Payton, and Carroll. Though Carroll in particular I'd take McVay instead. The way people talk about McVay around here, you would think he is the cream of the crop of NFL coaches. I don't think that has been true for several years now, as compared to when his schemes were fresh and NFL defences had yet to find answers, and I think it is clear at this point he is either unwilling or incapable of re-inventing himself. I think anything from 5 to 10 is a more accurate ranking for McVay. Which is very good. You're unlikely to do better unless you can correctly identify an up and comer. Elite coaches don't hit the market often.

Sean is showing a lot of the signs of career burnout. IMO Kroenke needs to be proactive. Better a year early than a year late.

Once a person begins to talk about walking away from their career, the worst thing you can do is talk them out of it. Most limp along for a year or two but they never return to the person they were. Kroenke made a huge mistake in bringing Sean back. Time to promote him to consultant and hire a new HC.

Reality check, do people really think Sean will stay beyond 2024 when he probably loses, Stafford, Kupp and Donald? I don't, so why wait, when there is a coach the Rams can get next year in Seattle who might not be there in 2024 but on another NFL team.

Sean isn't good at developing rookie QBs. DeBoer is very good at it. He turned Penix's career around. So if they are going to draft the QB of the future then maybe it's time for a new HC. Like I've said DeBoer has an offensive background. His offense at UW is very similar to what the Rams run. The offensive personnel doesn't need to change and he would bring his own DC who is also very good.

Would of had a little more merit if we continued with Goff and won a SB with him. Whether or not McVay was frustrated with him Goff to date is playing his best football and is actually pretty damn consistent.

If McVay isn’t credited for developing Goff then developing a qb doesn’t exist

His best football was in 2018. He's playing very close to that now.

That is a leap imo. I wouldn’t advocate firing a proven head coach in favor of an unproven one.

I really believe that a young Goff allowed the new distractions in his life to interfere with his job. McVay hinted at a lack of commitment from Goff back then.

It seems Goff may have needed a wake up call.

Not discrediting McVay whatsoever; however no one can say that Goff is playing good now because of him. Goff most likely had a chip on his shoulder and as someone said he may have matured to the point where he is taking it to the next level on his own with the support of his current team. Atleast Detroit knew they had to build around Goff, not the other way around. Maybe McVay expects his QBs to build around him? Also I thought Greg Olson was a huge asset to developing Goff during McVays first year as HC as I recall? I may be wrong though. It could of have been all McVay.

Goff's development in Detroit has been far greater than he had under McVay. Goff has taken his game to the next level, i.e. he's considered a top 5 QB by many.

You call sabotaging Goff's ability to read defenses by holding him in the huddle until it was too late for him to do anything but run the play. Then have your HC calling you out for needing to play better great development? Even I said when Goff was here if McVay would build his offense around Goff's skillset he could be a perennial top QB. But McVay did exactly the opposite.

Now Stafford is clearly in decline and Goff's career is ascending. Stafford's career is in decline because he's become injury prone. People denigrate Noteboom for being injury prone but turn a blind eye to Stafford? Raise your hand if you believe that Matt Stafford won't get hurt or have an existing problem like tendonitis in his throwing arm flare up during the final games this year and all of next year. I for one wouldn't take that bet.

How much you want to bet if McVay stays he will lobby for Wentz to take Stafford's spot starting in 2025. Hell even Carson suspects it. Wentz made it very clear this year he wants to sign with a team that offers starting potential for him. So now here he is in LA. I for one don't want him as a starter, because he's proven his problem in reality is between his ears.

I only hope that Stafford can finish this season and Carson never sees the field. This will allow Snead to go on with his plan and draft the next QB1. Will that make Sean realize he doesn't want to have to coach up a young QB? It might. But I still think 2025 is his retirement date.
