LA Rams: Brian Allen’s return to anchor offensive line a success

After the LA Rams seemed to be tinkering with the offensive line configuration far too late into training camp, there were plenty of logical reasons to be concerned. Making it more concerning is the fact that it required nearly an entire two years to fully rehab the LA Rams former offensive center, Brian Allen, from a devastating knee injury. Two years between suiting up, banging pads, calling out blocking, and oh yeah, hiking the football.

Many expected the LA Rams to draft an offensive center. When the LA Rams stepped up to the podium to select their 57th pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, Oklahoma offensive center Creed Humphrey and Wisconsin-Whitewater offensive center Quinn Meinerz were both there on the board. The Rams opted to go in a different direction.

The pads go on
Until the pads went on, Brian Allen was heading for the bench. And based on the fact that he is in the last year of his current contract, that would likely spell the last year as an LA Rams starter. But he fought tooth and nail to retake his starting spot. And then, two things happened.

His toughest challenger, offensive lineman Austin Corbett, had a bad outing when the pads went on. Simultaneously, it was the first time that the Rams coaches had the chance to see the entire offensive line suited up and actually blocking. That didn’t turn out as well as they had hoped. And so, months away from the first OTAs where Corbett got almost all of the work at center with the first string line, the Rams installed Allen to center, Corbett to guard, and Bobby Evans, the former right guard, to the bench. After that, we all crossed our fingers.

Brian Allen promising start
For the first game, Allen was not pancaking anyone. That’s no sleight, as he faced Chicago Bears Akeem Hicks, a 6-foot-4 352-pound nose tackle, nearly the entire game. Hicks ended up making three tackles and getting credit for 0.5 quarterback sacks. For that effort, Hicks was given a grade of 54.9 from Pro Football Focus.

So how did the Rams Brian Allen perform? He was given a 77.9 grade by Pro Football Focus. Kansas City Chiefs rookie offensive center, Creed Humphrey, scored a 66.8 grade by the very same PFF. Allen allowed one coverage sack against Hicks and was called for offensive holding once. That isn’t bad after mothballing for two years.

As the game progressed, and the Bears’ defense began to defend the back end of the football field, the Rams began to find running lanes for running back Darrell Henderson. Perhaps that is how it will go this year. If the Rams can protect quarterback Matthew Stafford that well to put up that many yards to just one sack each game? Well, I daresay that the Rams will be a very difficult team to face this year.

One game down, and the offensive line held up pretty well. The Rams are 1-0

The LA Rams sent shockwaves through the community in training camp when they announced that Brian Allen had reasserted himself as the starting center for the offensive line, less than two years after he had drawn the ire of many fans for disappointing performances over nine starts.

But without Bobby Evans or any other player demanding-through-play to start at right guard in place of once-center Austin Corbett, head coach Sean McVay felt he had no other choice than to give Allen a second chance. McVay called Allen a true “stand out” in training camp and felt that he was much improved from what most had remembered from 2019 and on Sunday, the 2018 fourth round pick out of Michigan State made his first start at center since going on injured reserve two Novembers ago.

How did Allen hold up against the Chicago Bears, Akiem Hicks, and one of the best front-sevens in the NFL?

It’s difficult to assess any player based on stats, but “offensive lineman stats” are another level beyond that. Grades from websites like ProFootballFocus are too ambiguous and too mysterious to rely on for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that you can’t ask for answers on “Why?” and “How?” and you also don’t want to go back and watch the tape and focus just on Brian Allen for 52 snaps.

(Which for me always goes into the “How?” of PFF grades: How did one person watch all 11 offensive and all 11 defensive players for 52 plays and be able to come away with an accurate representation of each individuals play within hours of the game ending? And that’s just when the Rams have the ball.)

Another potential area for statistical analysis comes from ESPN, and that worldwide leader in something rated Allen as the fourth-best run-blocker in the NFL in Week 1.

Allen also didn’t play in a preseason game this year or last year (there was no preseason last year) so this was his first live action in 22 months. Even casual onlookers could probably tell that Allen didn’t have a perfect performance, but there was also no reason to say that the center stood out in a bad way, other than one offensive holding penalty mid-way through the fourth quarter and one play where he was badly beaten by Hicks.

Rarely before has there ever been this much attention paid to a center, but Rams fans and media have gathered around Allen to monitor his every move, so to perform adequately with the spotlight shined directly at him, the fourth-year center likely moved the needle more in his favor after the 34-14 win against the Bears and Hicks.

How would you grade Brian Allen’s Week 1 performance?

I have been extremely hard on Bobby Evans in TC & preseason on just about every that I have seen & read on him this off-season & into the preseason. I was fired up about his poor performance during the 3 preseason games & ranted often, almost all negative .......

But I should be happy in one way with Bobby Evans & it's because of his overall 2021 work performance that gave us Brian Allen starting at center. I have no way of really knowing what a Corbett @ Center & Evans starting @ RG would play out but for now ....Thank You Bobby Evans :handshake:for your contribution & its overall positive effect on this EARLY 2021 OL.

Blaine Grisiak:
"Brian Allen had the No. 4 run-block win rate last week via ESPN Advanced Stats. It's one week, but there's a slight chance I might have been wrong about Allen heading into this season."
There could be close to a 100% chance that Blaine Grisiak was wrong.

In a testoerone filled world like football, theres very little humble self awareness, very littlr allowence for opposing viewpoints.

In this case, We should all be greatful and happy to be wrong. Hope those that were wrong continue to be wrong.

My worries of Brian Allen so far have been put to rest. He went against a solid DL of the Bears and did well.

Yeah the Bears do have some powerful dudes in that interior. Allen showing well vs them is a great sign.

That where it’s at. Week 6 @ 1:45ish. Allen comes to help on 56 and they do fall into Noteboom. I don’t think it was late and I’d expect him to help like that so I guess it was very similar, I’ll admit that.

Yea, it is really kind of hard to fault him on that play. Might make him look a little at where a guy is in the future, but that really is kind of hard to do and be aggressive when you are playing this game. And thanks for looking that up.

Very true, I was appreciative @blackbart for sharing and pointing that out because I was upset that the Rams lost Noteboom on that play and blamed Allen. However, if fairness, it appears Allen was playing until the whistle.

I had my doubts given what I saw in 2019 but I was impressed. I know he gave up the only sack of the night but the reports of him looking bigger and stronger appear to be true and it looks like he benefits more when playing between two competent interior OL.

I'd also like to throw some props David Edwards way in that regard. He might not ever be flashy enough to make the pro bowl but he's about as solid as it gets at that position imo.

I'm still in wait-and-see mode. You can't judge things by the first game of the season. Yes, Allen played his ass off this game, but I want to see two more great games before I'm comfortable with him as our starting center.

I expect him to get better. I think he has the mind set that can really make him good.
I hope so. They need him to play at least average or above. He cannot be a weak link like Blythe was in pass blocking.

I need to watch it again and focus on the Oline. He had a tough matchup with Akiem Hicks. So If only expect so much. However missing linebackers in the run game, while on the move was Allen’s biggest problem before imo. It can be the difference between a 3-4 yard gain and a 7-10+.

I WANT to be wrong here; and I am HAPPY to be in the small minority on this thread.

Solid play by Brian Allen at center would be a huge plus for the Rams' 2021 season ... and that's ALL I WANT.

However, I re-watched the game yesterday. I only watched the Rams' offensive snaps; and only focused on Allen ... play-in and play-out. Except for the final two possessions, I thought Allen had a very average game.

I thought he was over-powered one-on-one several times, usually by Hicks who is huge, athletic and a very good player. Also thought he whiffed on half-a-dozen blocks. Thought Stafford's pocket presence / awareness / decision-making were impactful.

I hope I am just being overly critical, and really ... REALLY ... stupid here.

The Dl spun off of Hav and Allen hit him right in the chest and put him down. No blind side. Should have been a teaching moment for the DL man! Not sure who he was, Mack maybe?

Yeah, it was a pancake catching the DL on an inside stunt. It was even more impressive coming off a push block assist to the other side. To be able to reset and explode into the DL was really nice work.

Fantastic play.
