Creating a new thread for news regarding Baker Mayfield as things are heating up in regards to him.

I’m shocked the Seahawks didn’t go after him, but it appears them, the Panthers, and I’m sure another wild card or two will factor in pretty soon in a deal for Baker.

One of my biggest fears is coming to fruition this off season it seems again.

Panthers must not enter Baker Mayfield bidding war with Seahawks

The Carolina Panthers could have competition for Baker Mayfield, but they should not get tempted into a bidding war for the quarterback.
Despite a report stating that there was a sense of urgency for the Carolina Panthers to get a deal done with the Cleveland Browns for Baker Mayfield, nothing has materialized as yet. Those in power within the organization are still contemplating whether or not it’s the right thing to do and there are also some financial implications to consider before a deal comes off.

According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Browns are willing to pay around half of Mayfield’s fully guaranteed $18.85 million in 2022. However, the Panthers are looking for them to take on more before any trade is officially confirmed.

There are still a few weeks remaining until training camp and in an ideal world, the Panthers will have Mayfield or someone else in before they descend on Spartanburg. But they might also have some additional competition for the Oklahoma product that could scupper their plans.

Carolina Panthers cannot get into a bidding war for Baker Mayfield

Josina Anderson of CBS Sports revealed that the Seattle Seahawks now have a legitimate interest in Mayfield, per sources. She added that Pete Carroll could also be open to giving the signal-caller a contract extension soon after he gets into the building.
“I’m told the Seahawks still have a high level of interest in acquiring QB Baker Mayfield and behind the scenes are open to contractually extending him, per league source. I also know that the process of collecting information and insights into Mayfield is still ongoing.”
While Anderson is one of the most respected insiders in the business, it’s hard to gauge what to make of this particular piece of news. This is a game of chess between all parties involved, with smokescreens aplenty coming to light to ensure one side blinks before the other.

Seattle traded away Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos this offseason and their current options under center are Geno Smith and Drew Lock. Not exactly the best duo if Carroll wants to make a better go of things in 2022.

A move for Mayfield makes sense from their perspective. One that could give the Seahawks a better chance of progressing in a difficult NFC West division that now consists of the reigning Super Bowl champions.
The Panthers will be monitoring this situation closely. Moving forward with Sam Darnold as the team’s starter is a major gamble and unless Matt Corral adjusts far better than anticipated, it would be shocking to see nobody else come through the door.

If all else fails, then Jimmy Garoppolo is another name to consider. A proven winner that looks perfect for new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo’s scheme.

This will be something to keep an eye on over the next few weeks. It’s not an ideal situation for Mayfield, but it’s clear his time in Cleveland is over despite Deshaun Watson being set for a lengthy suspension after settling 20 of his 24 civil suits relating to sexual misconduct.

Getting into a bidding war for Mayfield would not be wise. Carolina’s given up too much money and draft picks during a series of rash moves at quarterback since Matt Rhule arrived to consider another all-in pursuit for someone that might not move the needle that much.

This ongoing saga is becoming tiresome. But in all honesty, it’s a problem the Panthers have brought on themselves.

I'd MUCH rather see Mayfield end up in Carolina, than Seattle.

I think he's better than Drew Lock and Geno Smith... and I desperately want to watch Pete try to win with those two. :laugh4:

Really hope that the Browns get nothing in return for Mayfield. They don't deserve it.

That said, I don't see Mayfield making the Seahawks relevant this year either way

No disrespect intended but I don’t find Josina Anderson as a reliable source of inside information. Maybe at one time but not currently.

I like Mayfield better than a lot of other starting QBs in the league. Don't understand how he is considered junk all of a sudden.

Seems to mostly be that teammates can't stand the guy. Sometimes a change of scenery does wonders for someone though so it could be a good move for someone needing an actual QB like Seahawks. He would certainly be better than what they have but at the same time he might help divide that locker room too. Either way, I'm not going to lose much sleep over Mayfield in Seattle. He would make them better but I don't see that as a piece that would threaten us for a few years.

I think with the right support Baker would be dangerous and consistent. He played better than more than a few starters now being injured last year.

That said, the Seagulls are shit and like @CGI_Ram said I want to see them struggle for being morons and douchebags in general. Baker probably gives them 3- 4 wins more which is bad juju, albeit a higher pick.

Shit absolutely none taken! I seen Albert Breer and a few others talk about it etc just was the first article I seen and posted it.

No going to pretend I’m an expert on every sports reporter, any reason you don’t like Josifina?

I'd make the stains pay most of his contract if I were to trade for him. Also, he's basically a QB who has a lot to prove, so if I liked my QB room I'd be content to let Cleveland flail around. It's not like the guy is a slam dunk. Stains need to realize that as part of this trade market for him. They're not gonna make out big in moving him, it's gonna end up being a "take the contract off our hands and we don't get as much compensation" type situation.

If Seattle freaks out and throws them a lifeline then at least it's a rival giving up picks for a non-sure thing. But this is gonna get worse for Cleveland as they find some shitty QB to play for them and are still trying to act like Mayfield has high pick value.

Cleveland has the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Seattle has The Museum of Pop Culture. Baker has to go to Seattle on this alone. :zany1:

He's thrown more INTs than any other QB the last four seasons.
Stafford threw the most INT’s last season, he must suck to.

Let’s not pretend all this is on Baker alone. The years before he got there they won 3, 1, and 0 games the year before he landed in Cleveland. Then they went to 7, 6, and 11 wins respectively. The guy by himself is worth 6-7 wins, pair that with a decent team it’s playoffs.

Let’s not forget Hugh Jackson and other shitty fucks he had as a coach.

I’d be more concerned what fellow players say about him in the locker room.

The Browns have one of the top running games in football....good WRs, good RBs, a very good offensive line....they even had a top 10 -12 defense last year.

It's not "on Baker alone". But their passing game has lagged behind the last three years. He hasn't developed a productive relationship with his receivers and hasn't fully taken advantage of the talent around him.

mayfield was quite possibly the worst qb in the league last season. if anyone watched a browns game last season they would have seen chubb ripping big yardage almost every carry then mayfield derping it up, making poor decisions and poor throws to mostly open receivers who couldn't get the ball either their way or catchable balls.

Mystery team enters Baker Mayfield trade talks

The Cleveland Browns and Baker Mayfield have seemingly been in the same exact spot for months now. He’s no longer the future in Cleveland, so he wants out. Meanwhile, the Browns recognize the value of a starting quarterback, and don’t want to give him up for nothing, by cutting him. Not to mention, releasing him would only cause the Browns to pay his fully guaranteed $18.8 contract, whether he’s on the roster or not.

Where’s the fun in that? If the Browns are paying Mayfield, they might as well get some use out of him, right? Then there’s always the possibility that a team not currently looking for a QB could suddenly have a need. This appears to be what the Browns are banking on.

That’s all without knowing the potential ramifications of a Deshaun Watson suspension, which could actually create a bigger need for a starter back at the Dawg Pound, but for Mayfield, that ship has sailed.

Through all this fun, the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers have been the two teams most frequently linked to Mayfield, but developments have been slow on that trade front as well. With NFL training camps less than a month away from opening, could we see another team get involved?

That appears to be what’s happening right now, according to Michael Balko, who says a new team, not previously mentioned has gained interest in a Mayfield trade as of late.

Guessing Baker Mayfield’s next team

So, a new team is interested in trading for Baker Mayfield? Who might that be? We already mentioned the Seahawks and Panthers, so we’ll just ignore them in this space, but that leaves 30, well, 29 other teams who don’t have Mayfield on their roster. Let’s dive in.

Dallas Cowboys – Not only do the Cowboys have cap space, they don’t have a great backup. Some might say, what about Cooper Rush? But I think the Cowboys can do better, especially if they have playoff aspirations. Besides, Mayfield would be a perfect fit as a Cowboy.

Los Angeles Rams – For the life of me, I can’t figure out why the Rams would have just John Wolford and Bryce Perkins as the backup to their Super Bowl winning QB. If Matthew Stafford hits the deck, who comes in? It’s a bad place to be, but Mayfield could take over for a stretch and still get the team to the playoffs, but the other backups? Look away.

Chicago Bears – Fans of the Bears must avert their eyes, but what if the new regime isn’t buying into Justin Fields either? Never hurts to have another competitor in the field, pushing athletes to be their very best. Right now, there’s no one else resembling a quarterback in that locker room, Mayfield could show the others how it’s done. Trevor Siemian and Nathan Peterman aren’t primed for success.

Kansas City Chiefs – Baker Mayfield won’t enter a locker room with Patrick Mahomes and take it over. It just can’t happen. In some ways, this move could be a great spot for Mayfield’s career if he can’t step into a starting role. Being one play away from taking over for a potential playoff team is a good place to be.

Minnesota Vikings – Even though I said this would never happen just a few weeks ago, things can change in a hurry. Personally, I’m not a big believer in Sean Mannion’s ability to do anything other than hold a clipboard, great coach, terrible player. Kellen Mond has upside, yes, but does the current coaching staff feel he can reach it? Maybe they’d prefer to have a more NFL-ready backup, like Mayfield. If the Browns pay enough of his salary, a deal could work. Maybe they even want Mond in return as a developmental prospect as a favor for covering much of the cost?

Cincinnati Bengals – This seems unlikely, for the AFC North rivals to share starting quarterbacks. But maybe the Browns just don’t think that highly of Mayfield and believe sending him to another team within the division wouldn’t hurt them. Maybe they feel he could be a locker room cancer as a backup and aren’t afraid to listen to a deal. And I also don’t believe in Brandon Allen or Jake Browning’s ability to backup Joe Burrow if an injury strikes, the Bengals should be interested on some level.

New England Patriots – They haven’t been anywhere close to sniffing around Mayfield from what we can tell, but Brian Hoyer is 36 and Bailey Zappe, a rookie fourth-round pick is likely a year away from contributing in this offense. Even with Mac Jones entrenched as the starter, it can’t hurt to inquire about Mayfield, as the upside is enticing.

Basically, despite the limited interest in Mayfield, there are several teams who shouldn’t hesitate to consider adding Mayfield, for the right price, whether that’s contractually by giving up trade assets. Mayfield still has QB1 upside, and who knows? Maybe there’s even a Pro Bowl QB in there.

Why would Mayfield want to go to a team to be a back up? Horrible guesses by that person. He wants to be traded so he won't be the back up.

The internet has completely ruined nfl coverage. So many bozo articles. You can't escape them.

What is the best move to position him to be a starter again?

I am trying to think of an answer to your question…

Is going to Carolina as the starter going to do that? Or a backup on a quality team where he could rebuild his image, perhaps get a few starts and impress with a stronger team?
