Baker is on a one year audition. He won't be a backup again. The only way he's a Ram next year is if Stafford isn't. Given Stafford's health issues, that could happen sooner rather than later. How many people actually think he will be able to complete three more seasons without missing a lot of games?
In most cases a spinal contusion also results in disc damage. Either a fracture or disc compression is common. Just because it hasn't been made public doesn't mean it didn't happen. IMO it did. My evidence is that Stafford experienced leg weakness after being injured. That could only happen if a disc was displaced and pressed on a nerve bundle. That normally would require surgery which was discussed when he was injured. But that would end his career because of the extended recovery time. Stafford could live a relatively normal life without surgery but to play NFL football and expect not to exacerbate that injury is a huge gamble, bordering on reckless. It's one thing to have back pain. It's another to have it affect your leg strength. I like Stafford and I'm grateful for the Lombardi. But I am very concerned about his health.
My son just got his MRI results back. As I suspected he has a vertebral fracture and a slight disc compression. He won't need surgery but it's what ended his firefighting career. I spoke at length with his doctor and he agreed that most spinal contusions result in vertebral damage with disc damage also being common. My son experienced transient sciatic pain and that was considered normal for a lower lumbar injury. As a result the doctor told my son that arthritis and sciatic pain is likely as he ages. IMO Stafford is rolling the dice and I for one don't like the odds. As my son's doc told him that just because the contusion is healed doesn't mean he won't be susceptible to re-injury.
IMO Snead probably doesn't like the odds either and could be clearing cap to deal with Stafford's $36 M dead cap if he is forced to retire next year. I hope it doesn't come to that but you can't ignore the possibility. Between his back and his tendonitis Stafford's mind might be willing but his body is not looking good over the long term.
