Simmons stated that Gaines came up lame after practice so hopefully it's not a big deal. I feel strongly that for the defense to be special, E.J. Gaines will play an integral role.

Versatility makes Rodger Saffold a valuable commodity on Rams offensive line

By RICH HAMMOND / STAFF WRITER

IRVINE – All of this relocation stuff is nothing new for Rams offensive lineman Rodger Saffold, who has done it on a near-annual basis.

Saffold’s moves haven’t been from city to city, but merely within the line, from tackle to guard to back again. The distinction might seem subtle, but the skill sets are quite different and Saffold, preparing for his seventh NFL season, has become invaluable to the Rams because of his versatility.

During the first week of training camp at UC Irvine, Saffold moved to right tackle from left guard, where he started last season. Rob Havenstein, the Rams’ usual right tackle, is dealing with a foot injury.

“It’s actually the third time around that I’ve kind of had to switch up at the last minute, before camp or before a game,” Saffold said. “I’m used to it. You’ve just got to take more time to work on technique, just to try to make it second nature. I’ve always got to get back on the bike and ride again.”

Saffold broke in as the Rams’ starting left tackle in 2010, then started at right guard and right tackle in 2013 and broke in at left guard in 2014. That’s where Saffold remained until last October, when he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury.

Saffold returned to action for the start of optional workouts in June, and reclaimed his spot at left guard, but when Havenstein started camp on the physically unable to perform list, Saffold didn’t flinch.

“He has done a lot for us,” Coach Jeff Fisher said Wednesday. “With Rob missing time right now, we decided before the start of camp and notified him that we would move him out to right tackle. He said, ‘Cool.’ He just loves it. He will play any position but center. So it gives us the flexibility and peace of mind, knowing that if we do have an issue, we can plug him in any place.”

Cody Wichmann, who started at left guard after Saffold’s injury last season, has reclaimed that spot, but Fisher indicated that Havenstein should be back before the start of the regular season.

Until then, the Rams are fine. The offensive line struggled in the first two days of practice, but when the team put on full shoulder pads Tuesday, the line improved. Left tackle Greg Robinson had difficulty dealing with the Rams’ fierce defensive front, but Saffold looked steady on the right side.

“Because I’ve been focused on guard for so long, it’s kind of hard to get it all gone in six weeks,” Saffold said. “Hopefully coming back will be like riding a bike, kind of like how playing tackle is now. It’s always a challenge, and I feel like I do better with challenges. Under pressure, I’m a lot better.”

PERSPECTIVE GAINED

Coty Sensabaugh, signed as a free agent by the Rams in March, has been in the rotation at cornerback, the latest move in what has been a notable year.

Sensabaugh got married in May and, instead of a traditional honeymoon, he and his wife, Dominique, made a five-day mission trip to the Dominican Republic to distribute shoes to needy children through the “Soles 4 Souls” program. Sensabaugh said he plans to make a similar mission trip each summer.

“It was awesome, just how grateful they were and how they didn’t have anything, but they had everything,” he said. “The community just accepted us and we took care of each other.”

TIME TO REST

The Rams get a league-mandated day off Thursday, then return to UC Irvine on Friday, then have an open practice at the Coliseum on Saturday at 3 p.m. Free tickets are available through Ticketmaster.

“Things have gone fast, but from a health standpoint, we’re in good shape,” Fisher said.

Rookie receiver Pharoh Cooper missed a second consecutive practice with a quad injury. Cornerback E.J. Gaines, returning from a foot injury, had increased reps with the first team Wednesday but “came up a little bit lame at the end of practice,” Fisher said.

BIRTHDAY BOY

Rams running back Todd Gurley turned 22 on Wednesday. Fans serenaded him in song after practice and teammates Tavon Austin and Trumaine Johnson hit Gurley in the face with a towel full of cake or pie.

2 things after reading this thread.

1. it really sucks EJ is hurt again Ive got my fingers crossed its nothing serious and hopefully doesn't have anything to do with the foot hes been rehabbing all year.

2. Fisher is saying Havenstein is supposed to be back before the start of the season. Why would you move Saffold who he said will be the starting LG when Hav gets back to RT? why not let the rest of the line gel together in the spots they will be playing and let Battle or someone else play RT. I don't understand the reasoning behind this if they think Hav is gonna be good to go for game one.

Wichmann is the best option playing guard right now as a back up.Battle isn't ready to start.I think Reynolds might even be the 3rd string RT ?? Reynolds is nothing special, but he really works his ass off in practice.A leader by example.
--Btockers is a very hard working vet as well. They both go down the field until the whistle every play.It stands out during practice, because at some point your just going Dam how did he get there on that play.

Brian Quick looks like a starter. He is so tough in the Red Zone !!

There's a first time for everything I suppose. But hopefully this WR competition actually creates an NFL quality squad for the first time in a long time whoever ends up making the cut.

The big news today will be Gaines' health.
[fingers crossed]

Yeah, the generic "he came up lame" and that's it really scares me. Like someone said no news is bad news most of the time when it comes to injuries. We just can't afford a cb injury this year.

Did he hurt himself on that Kenny Britt play. Was thinking head or hand injury. It was opposite side of field from the fans.

Thinking it was a head injury ?? My guess ?? I don't know if Kenny Britt got his bell rung a little. He ran down field for a TD & was talking stuff all the way back.He made a nice catch, but saw a player down.He (EJ) had been shutting him down all day .
Kenny finally put his head down talking to Groh. I'm not sure if he was telling him his bell got rung ?? Just my guess from no report.

Another thing from yesterday almost every camp report I read said Robinson is not looking good at LT. This is really bad news. If he can't get it this year after all the extra work he put in in the off season then I don't think hes ever gonna be cut out for LT. Hopefully it was just a bad day but when your getting reports that hes making Longrase look like AD its not good. Maybe Saffold needs to be moved over to LT and stick Robinson back a LG we don't need him getting Goff killed his first year.

Robinson sure looks better than Goff !! He is going against Robert Quinn mind you ??
Goff can only complete short stuff underneath right in front of him against the 2nd & 3rd string defense. The exception is unless it is to Mike Thomas who looked really good & was impressive.

Every report I've read says he looks great. Not sure where you're seeing he looks bad.

Good I hope this turns into Drew Brees vs. Philip Rivers although I don't like Rivers...Don't know why, maybe because he always lost to Tom Brady.
Case looks the part & Goff is not ready at all. Deer in head lights still. He looked like he hurt his leg on the right side.Just my opinion ?? He was ginger on it on 11-11's until then he was looking good.
--My point is he did not look the same & he was(my guess) was favoring his Right leg. I stopped watching him & was more down field after that. I had seen enough. He is going to be good.
Case is such the veteran & a leader out there. He is an extension to the coach. He should have been 5-0 last year in Zurline makes his FG's
#1 was getting some extra FG attempts .
