I've had over a dozen times in the last 24 hours when I've thought, "Holy crap, I can't quite believe the Rams won the freaking Super Bowl!!!"
In '99, I truly believed all year they were the best team in the NFL. The GSOT was undoubtedly a team of destiny.
But this year.... man, what a freaking roller coaster ride. How did we survive that awful 3 game losing streak?!! And that absolutely crazy horrifying comeback by Tampa? And that EXCRUCIATING game for the NFC title? And that Super Bowl... so close I couldn't bear it!!
I mean....
IS THIS REAL LIFE?!?!?!?
No disbelief here. Maybe a few doubts in the 4th quarter. It's football, unexpected stuff happens all the time.
Sure enough, the Rams unexpectedly needed to come back or from behind to win each of the last three games. What followed was a spectacular demonstration of the team showing up biggest when it absolutely had to do so. The hallmark of championship teams.
It seemed clear beforehand that the Rams could beat anyone if they brought their A game. But would it really happen? There was enough inconsistency to fuel media doubters.
Would Stafford keep his cool and play each game well enough to win? Would McVay and Morris make the adjustments in each game needed to beat powerful opponents? Would the d-line dominate as expected to give the Rams a crucial edge? Could the linebackers and secondary hold up against opponents with a serious passing game? Could the team avoid game losing mistakes and turnovers?
The Rams answered all the questions, overcame all the obstacles-- including loss of their starting safety and then of their other star receiver-- and refused to lose.
Stafford proved his critics wrong in grand style on the biggest stage of his career, playing his best in the 4th quarter of close games. McVay's decision to go get him played out on the field just as Coach must have dreamed. Kupp proved he is all-universe, and not just in the regular season. Donald showed he is the greatest of all time on defense. Especially at winning at the end of big games with everything on the line.
Kupp, Stafford and Donald together made the most crucial plays down the stretch in the NFC championship and Super Bowl. They were enabled by recent Rams Von Miller, OBJ and-- shockingly-- the unretired pick up basketball gamer with a torn pec Eric Weddle. And 40 year man of the year Mr. Whitworth.
McVay proved himself to be a championship coach. In the process McVay and the Rams pushed Snead into a new t-shirt and into the stratosphere of NFL GMs. And they made a reality of Stan Kroenke's vision of a championship NFL football team in the best stadium in the world in LA.
Legendary performances by any standards. Fully worthy of the great Rams' tradition and equal to any of the greatest LA championship teams.
And there will be more great football to come.
