I don't have a problem with most of the STL fan base. There is one element that irritates me. Those that don't care about Rams history before '95.
When Merlin Olsen passed, the PD didn't even run a story; they used an AP byline, for God's sake. I wrote a post expressing my disgust and the bulk of the responses were, Who cares? A Rams fan cares for ALL things Rams. I hope that doesn't offend anyone.
And the media outlet that follows everything current about the Rams should also cover everything about their alumni, especially HOF members.
Man - I couldn't agree more. The history of this franchise didn't start in '95 and it is unacceptable for the media to gloss over a RAM HOFer.
Putting it back on the fan however, is not really appropriate IMO.
And I realize that is not what you are doing here.
Us long term fans are not necessarily going to acknowledge the passing of Cards football greats. And by the same token, we can't just EXPECT St Louis fans to acknowledge LA Rams greats.
I put that disconnect on the former regime. They moved on from LA and there was NOTHING that they were going to do to keep that lineage. If they had their way, Deacon would be just another player.
Now in defense of the media a little bit here.... I can't recall where I heard it or read it but my understanding was that the LA Rams were not to be put in print without club approval. We all know Georgia's and de facto Shaw's reluctance to recognize anything LA Rams. They left and said fuck you. That by my understanding is one of the things so many Cards fans are sick about what Bidwell did to them. Write a story about it and you are no longer covering our team. Effing bullshit!
But this is also one of the most refreshing things about the new regime. I really think that they get it that we are all RAMS FANS. They are making a concerted effort to recognize Rams greats - no matter when they were Rams greats. As a fan - I love that. As a pragmatist, that tells me that they feel they can tap the largest market in the US to an extent by recognizing the LA audience while remaining in St Louis. Brilliant!
So while many may feel they are being used in all this, I look at it as being shrewd. The team is going to be in St Louis for the long run. Why not do the little things that make sure us old timers want to continue to support the team? Why the hell not build a history lesson for young fans based on the RAMS greats - no matter what era?
Again - this regime gets it. Let's enjoy the ride Rams fans because I get the feeling we are in for some good times ahead.
Cheers my bruthuhs.
