Anyone Else Hope Smart Lights it Up?!

All I want is for Smart and everyone else to hold their responsibilities. Not go flying around and get out of position. He's not Aaron Donald but he can help the defense play well if he plays smart. No pun intended.

He's a big man, I think he can handle it.
The defense is going to need to raise the sack total by committee. I'm assuming at this point we'll see Donald in week 8, so they're going to have to go half the season without him and make up for it with guys like Barwin and Quinn having bigger seasons. It's possible too I think, not too much a stretch to think it could happen.
If Quinn suffers another injury things will get tougher. But I do think Barwin upgrades us on the left side, so assuming we have health I expect big things off the edge with a very solid and consistent rush.
As to Smart, just try to hold it down without being a liability. That's the extent of my hopes for him. And if somehow AD realizes he's gotta meet the team halfway on this and shows up, well, THEN we're lookin pretty good.

Nah. It was different with Keenum because I knew he wasn't the future. If we started out 0-4, Goff would have been thrown in earlier most likely. And I wanted to see Goff.Or Goff...or Mannion...or Warner.

He didn't really, was worst Starting QB during his starting time right? Goff followed up worse than that.
No way to really know how Goff would have been had they not started Case. But this year all pieces are set for Goff to succeed, except RG and RT.... but we should see something. I kept hoping they would pull Case last year we were awful after the 3-1 start.
We need to think that AD is like being on IR. Unavailable. Until that changes.

I just want Smart and the entire defense to do their jobs. If they do the defense will be fine. In my head, Donald is hurt and we need Smart to play like Smart. Nothing more nothing less. You cant replace Donald but you can hold your own and as a unit the defense will remain stout.
This is my concern too. The pass rush is the flashy part and of course just decent pressure is all that's needed when facing *cough* Tolzein... But the job always starts with stopping the run. Gore may be perennially overrated and now also decrepit, but the one thing he's always done well is the nothing special run of 4 yards. Our front 7 pieces can't let themselves play undersized and allow the Colts to rely on consistent run gains letting Tolzein have 3rd and short all day. Then they can't get frustrated and open up lanes with over-penetration. Asking for NFL-level discipline is asking a lot for a rookie d-lineman so we'll see how it plays out.

Quinn HAS to bounce back to really pick up the slack. IMO if he gets hurt again or has a soft year they cut him or trade him.

He may not be Aaron Donald, But he sue is being asked to replace him! To draw an analogy, he may not be the Next Deacon Jones, but IF he's the Next Fred Dryer, we'll be fine!
We all know that Smart will be tested early and often.
I suspect that the kid will hold his own. Not dominate, of course. But hold his own.
I think that he's got future potential. And I think he'll show us a few flashes in this very first game. Invaluable experience gained thanks to AD's absence.
Another thing. Let's all remember that Smart will be surrounded by 1st stringers in this game, for a change. And that Wade will have game planned and be seriously focused on winning the damned game, rather than evaluating scrubs. Wasn't the case in any of the PS games. That's huge for Smart.
