He's played poorly this year before everything went down. That said, he's coming off a significant injury that ends the careers of some. Per-injury, the kid was talented. Unless there are differences that can't be moved on from, you don't let talent walk out the door for nothing. The cap hit is minimal. I agree with holding onto the asset and trying to find resolution. Not a fan of it playing out in public, but imagine the shit many fans/posters/media would be giving the organization without some sort of explanation. Perhaps I blindly trust McSnead (I do, Tutu pick and Austin extension aside!), but I don't have issue with the way they've handled this, particularly given the fact no one knows what the hell really went down.
