I like what he’s done, but I don’t think I’d tender him.

That’s almost $3 million.

For a second-round tender? I'd still do it. Worst comes to worst, we have him for a little less than three million or some team decides to take a flyer on him, and we get a second-round pick.

I mean.. I don't hate it because I like the kid.
I would just have to see what else they do at the position.
For example.. if they sign a premier edge in FA and plan to draft one in first three rounds? I'd use that money elsewhere.

Surely it’ll be one or the other? We have Young on one side; we can get a free agent or an early draft pick opposite him and then keep Hoecht (and others) as backups.

Second Round Tender was $4.3M last year; and is projected by OTC to be around $4.6M in 2024.

I’d do both.
I think Young is solid.. but he’s older and unlikely to develop a ton more.
I’d like quality depth and a younger guy who might develop into something.

I think Young can still develop. He may be a bit older but he's only played NFL football for a few months. Experience counts.

Oh, sure.

But I think he’s a good number 2 edge.. not a primary guy.

I think Young can develop a lot. You can't teach speed but you can work on moves, counters, etc. I don't know what that upside may be..but even so he's going develop quite a bit.

However, as as has been discussed a 2nd edge is needed. Mathis has most talent of all the others but he's not getting playing time ... not sure if it's playbook or he's not looking good enough in practice. Either way, Rams need to sign a vet edge ... Burns is my fav but it doesn't have to be him

I see Young as a strong side of the formation type. Not an elite version of one of them, either, probably more a middle of the pack at best type who is also sound in contain with good recovery ability. I do appreciate his consistent effort though and you can go a long way in this league with that.

What we need is real juice on passing downs. Type of guy who requires protections his way. Before AD is completely done. I think as things stand now AD is going to transition to a pass rush specialist maybe as early as next year to keep him fresh, with Turner as the 3T early snaps. At least I am guessing that will be the plan. So finding that juice in this draft would be immense for this defense. The impact would be profound I think.

The 2 Ram DE/olb have played well.Hoecht is special because of what he brings every day.
Young has more upside though. Then again it’s hard to out work Hoecht

Six sacks on the year.. a lot of heart and hustle.

I don't know if he'll be with the Rams next year, but I've enjoyed his story and the fact that a guy who just obviously loves to play football found a way to a multi-million dollar contract. I'm talking 2-years, 6 million.. or something like that. But for a UDFA? Not bad!!!

Loving his game lately. Not sure I'd pay him though. I think we could find a player to fill his role via the draft, for much less money.

He is dropping into coverage at an astronomical rate. Far and away the league leader last time I read, but that could now be dated. Still... what the heck.... it's one question I'd love to ask the coaching staff.

He is getting visibly better every week - which is actually pretty rare to see with progress being so stark and linear - and having fun doing it. A real treat to watch him develop before our eyes. EDIT: He's one of my favorite Rams actually. Not many guys on the roster are more fun to watch than #97.

I agree on all that.
Ideally? I'd love to have a guy like him back.. I just don't want him as a starter. A 4th edge? Sure.
He's a glue guy for an organization, imo.

I’m not sure about what the defense really looked liked today as far as how they lined up ? Byron Young & Hoecht have been switching positions the last few weeks. Raheem just made mention of it during the week as well.

It really is bizarre to see him 25 yards downfield in coverage across the middle one play then on the next he's rushing. The guy has a hell of a motor. I just wish he would show better contain awareness but I do appreciate the player.
