I think people are sleeping on this pick a bit. He's not Puka who just wins through physical dominance but a crafty route runner who can create separation outside of being schemed open. This pick makes sense for where he went in the draft and I've seen Diontae Johnson as a comparison which seems about right.

I think there's a role for him as a no.4/5 WR and they must see something on STs as well because he'll be required to play that to make the 53.
After doing a deep dive watching his tape and comparing Mumpfield to the rest of this class as well as some current NFL players I think I'm going to double down on this take btw.

It's obvious why he fell in the draft due to his below average size and speed as well as a tiny wingspan. However Mumpfield's route savvy, foot quickness, zone awareness, and the amount of consistent separation he creates are head and shoulders above the rest of the late round picks and those traits are some of the best in this class. Really, really advanced WR who has good ball skills, tracks the ball well, and gives you the versatility to play X, Z, or slot receiver at a high level.

I think McVay made this pick with a vision in mind like when he took Puka, even though they fill completely different roles. Some may see a throwaway pick for a guy we could've gotten as an UDFA, I see a guy who could be an immediate contributor and lightning may have just struck twice.

I think a lot of people will never like TuTu unless he completely lights it up. It is fair that he hasn't proved out really. But I'm hopeful that McVay will actually use his skill set this season. I think the dude is a player. But apparently, he hasn't convinced McVay of that. It sure would be cool to see the Rams use that elite speed that he has in spades.
McVay has admitted that the fans are right in their criticism of him not using Tutu, and I think the Rams extending him shows that they are still adamant on using him for the reason they picked him so high.

I always figured the injuries to the oline early in the last 2 seasons may have changed their course for the packages they use on offense, many which may include tutu opening up the field, whoch include more time to develop that McVay may not have thought they had.

I believe McVay called him a separation machine in the press conference.

The Rams offense will look a lot different without Kupp and there will be more opportunities for all the WR not named Nacua. I am going to miss Kupp. Mump with his route running could develop into that reliable slot guy who catches first down and keeps the chains moving.

I love the nickname...Mumps. Tru Edwards I am keeping an eye on vs Mumpfield. Edwards at 6'3 and a 4.4 40 is bigger and faster although Mumps seems to play faster then his time speed. @Memento has already given Edwards a roster spot so let the games begin.

Or maybe McVay over-payed for a useful player in a bad FA and draft class year.

What’s McVay going to say? “It’s a bad free agent class for receivers, and the draft isn’t great for receivers, so we had to sign someone.”

Of course he’s going to play it up the way he did. He won’t tear Tutu apart.

All we really need to focus on to know the truth is the length of the contract. If McVay loves Tutu and sees him as a part of the long term future he gets a three year deal at least. He’s on a prove it deal for one year.

“The only reason Konata Mumpfield fell to the Rams in the seventh round is due to the limitations of the Pittsburgh offense. The former Panther adds a new element to the wide receiver room that will keep them in games till the very end”

PFF had Mumpfield ranked as the 164th best player on their board. I cannot access but imagine for the reasons beings discussed on this board.

I am excited to see him in preseason. It would be nice to have a late round gem disrupting our depth chart.

Yeah, the more I see of him, the more I think that - at a bare minimum - he'll be able to back up all three spots (whether or not they onboard him at all of them).

Seems like he could be a great depth piece that will allow the offense to function if he needs to take snaps at X, F, or Z.

Respect your opinion, but it really doesn't make sense. Atwell has proved that when he's on the field he is productive. Even when he isn't targeted, the dude is always open. So nothing to prove there.

Being his useage is so limited that it doesn't really bring much to our offense atm, it wouldnt make sense to pay him 10 mil for one yr, just to use him exactly the same, when you could have replaced him with lets say Xavier Smith for that yr and filled a roster spot with a UDFA and saved 10 mill and basically zero drop off in offensive production. That's just bad management IMO.

So if the player has made the most of the opportunities that he's been provided, you can rule out this being a "prove it" deal. We know McVay goes conservative when things don't go his way, and I would say in terms of the oline the last 2 seasons I would say that may have forced him to change his game plan and put Atwell on the back burner.

Also, I'll admit I'm ignorant on contract specifics, but it would seem that if it was also a "prove it" type deal, wouldn't the majority of the contract be based on performance incentives rather than the 10 mil being guaranteed?

I'm not gonna stand on a box and scream Tutu's great but there's a lot of people on here who compare Smith to Tutu or don't think there's much drop off that I think would benefit from watching the two run routes and catch passes (and even block).

This board doesn't seem to have a big appetite for discussing useful players and their distinctions.

Only starters, stars or busts.

It makes sense. It’s a one year deal. If he’s so good then why not a 3 year deal? If McVay was totally convinced that he simply underutilized Tutu, then he’d want to lock him up long term. In comparison are you saying you expect Puka to get a 1 year deal when his rookie deal is over?

And the receiver room was depleted. They let Kupp go Tyler, and Demarcus. 10 million isn’t a big contract.

I totally expect the plan is to run more 12 personnel like the coach talked about and we won’t see Tutu used much more than he has been to date.

I don’t think Xavier Smith has proven anything. I don’t even consider him a starting NFL receiver.

I get that Tutu has some utility to the offense, but this notion that he suddenly will have a big impact because our stupid head coach didn’t realize how good he actually is, until this offseason, silliness. McVay is acutely aware of the skill level of each player on the offense. Tutu didn’t slip through the cracks somehow.

Wouldn't make sense to sign him to a 3 yr when you have a lot of negotiating with other players that are gonna need contracts that are coming up. At least we get him for this year, and they can reevaluate him as a priority or not. If hes not a priority over another or other players, would suck to pay him as a priority for multiple seasons.

100% agree with you on seeing more 12 personnel. This offense I think will be more creative than the last few, barring injury of course.

I think it's logical to say almost any one year deal, especially for a 25 year old player, is going to be a prove it deal. In this case, it appears they're asking Tutu to prove he can still be as efficient with more targets to earn a long term deal.

I think where I am having difficulty understanding this is I have never seen a player who has been on a team for 3 seasons, never had a dip in performance and has had success in the limited snaps he's been given, and have the team sign him to a "prove it" deal. They know what they have in him, and if they don't, that's on the coaches. To me 10 mill guaranteed instead of a 5 mil with performance incentives that would get him to 10 mil, tells me they are paying him to stay and waiting to see where they can make adjustments next yr and after with other contracts/veterans they still may add.

I hope he's a good as he could be because the injury bug is flying around and waiting to bite somebody. If it does, would be nice to have a good possible breakout back up in house. Go rams!

It is definitely a prove it contract. Not to prove it to the Rams, but to prove it to the league. If they could have gotten better for the money in the FA market they would have. They want better and will go elsewhere as soon as they can. I am not sure they think he can hold up physically as a full time starter.
