McCutcheon has better hands than Skowronek, Van, and Harris. Maybe even Tutu.

He’s better at jump balls than all of them also.

So the questions are how fast is he? Can he regularly separate? Can he block?

Right now it looks like he’s potentially a more well rounded wide receiver than Skowronek and definitely Harris. Tutu and Van comps would have to wait.

If they kept him he’d likely have to be on special teams. Can he do that?

Then there is also a possibility of the Rams trying to trade him. An udfa for a mid round pick is a good deal.

I love what I saw in Cutch but he could do a cartwheel into a back-flip and then 1 hand an errant throw and it still wouldn't affect Van Jefferson's place on the team.

If you are looking to elevate him above a current WR, I would start with Harris

There are definitely questions still to be answered about his ability. I just read that some said he’s slow. If that’s the case then he likely won’t make the team despite height and great hands.

2) Anchrum was impressive at guard, played well at LT. He could be a mauler for the run game.
This is very good news for my ears! Been hoping for this as many here know, I like Tremayne Anchrum & think he can be a good fit.

Sad to see our former 3rd rd selection who is well into his 4th season as a Ram OL'er #71 Bobby Evans playing against 2nd & 3rd team defenders having such a poor showing but I should have known that this game is just a continuation of his past 2 seasons...

I am surprised :sur::wow2:that center Jeremiah Kolone who has been lurking here with McVay since 2018, would appear to have the 2nd team center position well within his grasp.

Duds: Bobby Evans and A.J. Arcuri

Evans didn’t have the best night at right tackle, allowing a few pressures on Perkins throughout the first half before Arcuri took over in the second half. He’s still fighting for a roster spot and isn’t yet locked in as a primary backup, so this preseason performance won’t exactly help his case as the regular season approaches.

Watch Evans #71 on this goal line block......:not:

It wasn’t much better for Arcuri at right tackle in the second half, as he struggled to prevent the Chargers’ edge rushers from pressuring Perkins in the pocket.

Agreed 100% it was a highlight real for McCutcheon to post the least. If this continues, they won't be able to cut him, that's for sure.

He ran a faster 40 than Kupp (4.57) and had comparable short area times. He's also strong AF for a WR, imo... 19 reps on the bench.

He's not a burner, but seems plenty fast enough.

Bryce Perkins proving he's better on game day. Perkins was special in the game, that's for sure. It's obvious he's limited with his arm, but his legs are better then Lieutenant Dan's new legs. Plus Perkins seems to showcase great leadership ability too as players fed off Perkins extending the plays. They will be keeping him on the roster, that's for sure.

Roster decision time... you have to choose between Perkins and Lance McCutcheon, which way do you go?

Any takeaway thoughts on our 3rd season former 3rd rd selection safety Terrell Burgess performance?

You've been right all along my Ram Brothers. Rams have better options now then Burgess including Grant Haley, times to cut bait unless he showcases something better in the next two weeks.

Yep.

Burgess seemed like a smart player in college.. but just seems lost on an NFL field.
If Russ Yeast is looking as good as some have said, we'll be saying goodbye to Burgess.

Lol.. So would I.

But I'm giving you a scenario that's a tough one, intentionally. Come on, play along.
I would keep McCutcheon over Perkins. I love Perkins legs, but IMO, he doesn't have an NFL arm, which will always limit him. He does some great things, but again the arm is limited so I keep McCutcheon and sign another QB to the practice squad.

Exactly how I see it.

Again... I'm waaaay too excited about McCutcheon today... but, after a performance like that, I like to look for reasons why a player CAN'T continue to perform and grow.. is he too small for the position? Is he too slow for the position? Does he have short arms? Specific question about WRs... Does he catch the ball with his hands or with his body?

I dug into all that as much as I could after the game in this morning and couldn't find a single reason this kid can't be a legit NFL WR and that what we saw wasn't the real deal.

Why are you comparing McCutheon to a slow, athletically-limited, FCS-level WR (frickin’ BOLD BLUE FONT).

IDK, IMO Cooper Kupp is pretty fly for a white guy, but again, that's just me.

My takeaways

Even though many of us have concerns about some of what we consider to be unproven talent. McVay and staff are very comfortable with the system they have put in place to assess and evaluate players. I think we are leading the league in this and we will begin to see teams follow our lead.

I really enjoyed watching our youth especially in the secondary, we had some miscues but they were fast active and exciting.

Our O.L is always a bit of a concern when it comes to the run game, I am taking a wait and see approach. B Evans is still trending down.

Our young WR's were fun to watch. We have an exciting group of receivers. It seem this staff knows what they like and knows how to get them to contribute. That being said we could easily go the entire season without any of them catching a ball.

I liked the energy and motor of Hardy. He looked really active although a bit small, maybe it was the #44 that threw me off.
I think he has enough talent to develop. Fringe 53.

The running game was meh! Rose runs hard but neither he or Calais had any production worth getting excited about. In all fairness they often got the ball in short yardage situations so another game or 2 will likely bring more clarity.

Lastly Perkins is just fun to watch, he competes and obviously is a better gameday player than a practice player. Some players just need that energy to feed off to get the most from themselves.
I am a bit surprised our QB3 isn't a bit more adept in the pocket since if Perkins was called upon in season we would need to really adjust our approach to be effective

I thought Bruss had some good moments, struggled in others. Got blown up on a few pass rushes, did well in the combo game and got to the second level a couple of times. Bruss is a good match for the run game, which is why I think he was drafted.
Anchrum look good at G.
Jackson appeared very strong at T. If he got his hands locked on, he stonewalled rushers from what I saw.
Brewer had some nice work at LG. Lost his feet a couple of times (if memory serves) but also did a nice job pass blocking and got some movement in the run game.
Kolone was the surprise for me. He looked very solid over all at C.
Certainly would be nice to have another depth guy at C.

Bobby Brown played well. Got a sack and made another play or two in the run game before getting injured. McVay said he was optimistic at this time about his injury.
Gervase playing a very undersized ILB....shades of Barron.
Burgess playing in week 1 of the preseason....he must really have fallen out of favor with the D staff.
Hardy and Whitley both got some pressure. Hardy actually held up ok on the edge on run downs despite his light weight.....Im assuming he's added some lbs.

Perkins is fun to watch and can do things when things break down. He seems a little slow on his reads sometimes. Trying to extend that tendency out (if that is indeed the case) to regular season games with actual D schemes in place and blitzing etc....could be a tough go. Lack of arm strength is a tough one to over come. Generally has to be done between the ears, pre snap. Or with the legs in some cases.
Interesting prospect. McVay mentioned he is liked by Greg Olson, which should carry some weight with McVay given Olsons great history as a coach.

McCutchen won the night of course. Big, strong, physical receiver with strong hands should always find a landing place. After Kupp, Robinson, Jefferson, Tutu....it gets mighty crowded. Skow, Powell, Harris, McCutchen and the others....the Rams are going to end up cutting some good players. Thats before a possible resigning of Beckham.
The two most impressive WRs to me last night were McCutchen and Trammell. Trammell can run routes and get open. That dude is a very tough cover in quick, short or option routes. If either guy is assigned to the practice squad they will get nabbed by another team.

Ghost of Beckham, Skow (only based on him being held out), McCutchen, Trammell, Harris, Koski is how I have the rest of the depth rated out, for what that is worth....which is next to nothing.

Overall, I thought it was a good performance for a week 1 preseason game. Cleaner than in years past. I think the Rams depth is greatly improved over 3 or 4 years ago.
