I already call them the "Whiners" or "69ers", so I don't particularly care for a name change: those two names are perfect as is.

Since the actual 49ers of the gold rush era were nothing but a bunch of Native murderers what should their name be changed too ????
What they did was real and far worse than calling yourself Redskins, which many Indians are proud of I think its only fitting that the 49ers be canceled and forced to pick a new name.

In all the history that I've studied I had no idea that the gold miners of 1849 were nothing but a bunch of native murderers.

I always thought they were just looking for gold.

Historians have done an amazing job of hiding that history.

Sorry, you do not know what you are talking about. There was a massacre in Humboldt County where 700 Indians were killed in a even that lasted a couple days. I personally know a man who is Yurok as I am. Thing was, his kin started out Karuk. One day in tha late 1800s miners came up a valley nead what is today orleans CA. They came up the creek burning and killing and 4 redwood canoes were filled with young girls and sent downriver where they were taken in by the Yuroks.
LOTs of thing happened that is unwritten history like you got right here.
It was the miners, not the Army.

They were assisted by the new California government that wanted to take care of its Indian problem so the gold could be mined and California could become a State. The government facilitated that and later carried out in spades by the US Government after the civil war.
