I've got this one penciled as a loss. That is just not a team we can beat in the regular season. Maybe its my pessimism but I have no expectations for a win. Our offensive line is overmatched by their defensive front. Our defensive strategy plays right into their dink and dunk strategy.

Since this is a Keys To Beating The 49ers thread I'll throw in my two cents how I think it can be done.

1. Stop the run.
2. For Gawd's sake make a tackle after the short completion!
3. Stop the run.
4. Get some pressure on Jimmy GQ
5. Stop the run.
6. Don't let them have defensive or special teams points.
7. Stop the run.

Stopping the run forces 3rd and longer than they are comfortable with. They'll still throw underneath on 3rd and long. They don't trust Garoppolo to throw further down the field that often. All we have to do is tackle. Do that and they will barely score in the teens.

Offensively, I don't have a good answer. McVay is the genius. He's just gotta find a way to mitigate the deficiencies on the line. Running with some success would help. But I'm not confident they can do that. Maybe some jet sweeps with Powell to keep them honest? Fake the sweeps and either hand off to the back or look to pass further down field? I don't know what will work with this line. I'll have to defer to McVay on that.

I'd also like to see a greater sense of urgency from McVay.
Too often he's too cool for school out there and passive af.
When's the last time you saw him getting upset at a ref or digging into a player after a mistake?
I don't want him to go Bobby Knight on us... but every once in a while.... light a fire for god sakes.
The players take on that same "ho-hum" mentality onto the field and the 9ers (who get pumped up for an 8 yard pass play)
take all the momentum and energy. Need to see some changes --- whatever we are doing versus these guys has not worked.
We BARELY squeaked by in the postseason last year.... let's rout these MFers and take control of this division.

I'm no defensive specialist or football savant. But rat boy's plan is very simple.

Run the ball and if you can't stop it, run the ball some more.

Throw short passes to negate the Rams pass rush. Dink and dunk the ball and count on YAC, especially from dweebo.

If you get into 3rd and long, you run the ball and hope for a long run or a screen pass to dweebo with downfield blocking.

It's rare that rat boy actually goes down the field unless he has to.

rat boy plays conservative, almost counting on the Rams to commit a turnover and allow him to execute his conservative game plan.

And the Rams have been playing right into his hands.

We won the NFCCG, but providence was on our side in that game. We turned the ball over with an INT in the end zone in the first quarter and then jackasskee tart drops a sure INT that could have been a nail in our coffin. The Rams were the team of destiny last season.

We need to play hard nosed football. Maybe even conservative a bit if we get the lead. Punting isn't that bad if we have the lead and our defense is playing well

Just my 2 cents.

HONESTLY. Every year we hear of key niner injuries right before a game with us that sounds promising.

AND THEN, NOPE.

They humiliate us. I’m pencilling a loss here. Every year this happens. I’d be bat shit crazy by thinking we will beat them. I’m not doing it this year. I’ll let them surprise me.

Enough of the pessimism, Atlanta put 21 points on this D. KC put 42 on em last week, over 500 yards of offense.
IMO, they found their mojo last week against Carolina and I fully expect to see them come out blazing and look like Rams football again

Since McVay, even though his record has sucked against them, i cant help but always think we win this one. So we can win this won.

We can litigate X&Os all day long, but having witnessed this rivalry for the past 40+ years--Niners historically have been way more focused on kicking Rams ass.

Beating the Rams is fundamental to their identity as a team, a priority for their franchise, and an expectation of their fan base. As much as it pains me, I cannot say the same for the Rams
Agree 100%. Acquiring CMC was just as much about keeping the Rams from getting him as anything. IMO they are building themselves to ensure they win the NFC West. They don’t care about how they match up with thrr we entire NFL. Then because RatBoy is such a genius he would be able to out scheme any other Coach in the playoffs. A Rams win this week will go a long way in dismantling Ratboys strategy and possibly his tenure.

Simple: Don't Have the Defense Play off 10 yards from the LOS.

If you do, you're giving them exactly what they want.

Same strategy as that NFL genius Jeff Fisher.

The only real criticism I have for our D vs the Niners is if we’re going to sit back and keep everything in front, how about diagnosing and aggressively going after them occasionally ? All they like to do is throw into the middle of the field or run screens.

We almost got a pick six in the last game and I liked that. Piss poor tackling ruined that play.

I’m fine with jumping their routes but let’s get the secondary on the same page.

So were the Niners just that much worse in '17-'18?
