I'm agnostic on LOR... I honestly don't get it
Huge on LotR - the books and the first three movies. It’s probably because I worship Tolkien’s world-building, and think, “If I could have a tenth of his (Tolkien’s) world-building, a tenth of Stephen King’s character development, and a tenth of Edgar Allan Poe’s prose, that would be enough to make me legendary as a writer.”

…Yeah, I love Tolkien’s world-building and there are very few who come close. The man wrote six new languages for his books, wrote the land - to an outstandingly detailed extent - of Middle-Earth and beyond Middle-Earth, and whole lineages for men, elves, dwarves, ents, and the Maiar and Valar; that should tell you how purely dedicated to world-building he was.

And his characters were underrated as well, and the lore behind them makes the movies pale in comparison - and the movies weren’t bad when it came to actor/actress portrayal.

I've read some of your stuff, years ago so I can't remember it specifically, but can remember thinking you're a pretty good writer!

The only writer that comes close is Robert Jordan - his world building was excellent as well. And he was also great in character development. I mean who makes a character that is so annoying at the beginning and is possibly my favorite character at the end.

Let’s not forget Frank Herbert, my fave.

35 thousand years of lore is… impressive, especially when he included so much diverse religious and political and economic diversity.

I liked almost every one of his books except for the God Emperor of Dune - I found it extremely boring. Took me forever to finish it. Children of Dune wasn't that great either.

And you know I got shit for reading Dune because they read that it was written at a high school level of writing not knowing that is a high level of writing. Only thing higher are college textbooks.

Chapterhouse: Dune got me.

I met Frank Herbert in April of 1986 as he was doing his book tour for Chapterhouse: Dune at A Change of Hobbit bookstore on Lincoln Blvd in Santa Monica, CA as a senior in high school. Got the book signed. Not many of those signed since he died like 2 months later.

I LOVED God Emperor of Dune…Children of Dune as well.

Children of Dune helped me realize that for all he went through, Paul Muad’dib was a bitch… maybe I’m being harsh, but Leto II didn’t flinch.
