I don't think it not bring Sergio is the issue. It having no value outside of injury is the issue. Early reports suggest the rams want to re-sign McClendon. If that's the case, they likely don't think he fell off in the playoffs (I actually don't remember that either. Only the one Chicago game). So if the rams commit to both, then a backup only helps if somebody gets hurt. Which could happen, but i don't think we need to spend a first round pick on insurance.
I agree with you. I can see them drafting OT because I genuinely feel that everything is on the table, but I don't see an OT as the best use of the pick. Ideally, we resign McClendon, continue with AJ, and have a solid swing tackle who didn't cost a 1st-round pick on the bench.

McShay on the Herd: of course take this FWIW. They want to move back and take Simpson. Take a WR in round 2 (Bell perhaps?). Wont take Lemon pick 13. Under this scenario I prefer Freeling, dont mind taking a chance on Bell though. Says a run early on OTs. Les a wild card.
If the Rams move back to grab Simpson, then I hope they get a high 2nd. The will need to move up, IMO, to grab top WR in the 2nd. I predict a run on WRs is gonna happen at the end of the 1rst.

Teams needing a WR picking late in the 1rst:
9ers, chiefs, bills, ravens, cheatriots,

I mentioned this yesterday, trade far enough down to get Simpson, but also gain a 2nd. Boston has been mentioned by several outlets falling into the 2nd. Grab him and a OL/LB at 61 and we've addressed some glaring needs.
In theory (not looking at specific teams), they could trade 13 for 22 and 54, and then trade 54 and 61 for 29 for a player like Boston.

There are 3 types of Rams fans about this Simpson thing

If you don't like Simpson it's all a smoke scree
If you do like Simpson it's confirmation from the GM about your guy
The rest of us are like yeah sure whatever we'll see what happens won't be upset either way but he could be the pick maybe.
For me it will be about the trust McVay has earned. If he picks him, I will trust it. I also think some of us are just anxious about the future QB, so it would be nice to have a solid candidate in the building.

Here's how Snead built his 10 player 2025 OL unit that was less than one quarter from going to the SB :

Starting Unit:
UDFA -Jackson
2nd rd draft selection-Avila
Free Agency-Shelton
Free Agency-Dobson
5th rd draft selection-McClendon

Reserve Unit:
UDFA -Dedich
7th rd. Arcuri
6th rd. Limmer
Waiver Wire- Bowles
Waiver Wire-McMahon

Conclusion
4 from the Draft
2 from Waiver Wire
2 from UDFA
2 from Free Agency

Yes, the Rams have been good enough at acquiring and developing that this has worked for a while. Only the trade for Dotson and the 2nd round pick of Avila came right in and started.

With all of the upcoming contracts expiring, the Rams should be looking more at players like Avila and Dotson—players capable of starting by next year.

The wild card of course, is just how far along some of those guys like Limmer and Dedich are. Would they be able to start next year? The draft should give us a clue.

BTW, I didn't realize Caleb Williams was only 6-1". QB guru, Mina Kimes, was just on NFL Live questioning whether Simpson has the size to play in the NFL. Someone pointed out Caleb Williams as a comparison. I looked it up, he is listed at 6-1, 225. So same height, but thicker. Purdy is 6-1 220.

So could Simpson put on 10-12 lbs while he sits and learns? If he gets to around 6-1" 222 lbs, that's not too bad.

I was all for taking him with one of our first before we took care of CB. Now if we do like you said I'm for whatever McSnead do. There are no glaring needs to me. There are definite positions that can be upgraded and a need for depth but we're not in a bad place if we go into next season with our projected starters right now. It can get better and it will get better IMO. That doesn't have to happen with 13 they've proven to get starters outside of the 1st round.

I really struggle with the idea of taking a swing tackle at 13. We'd essentially be using a top pick on a guy that hope we don't have to use.

I think the rams are in a tough place where moving up or moving down are the only ideal options. Bain might fall to us. I'd take him (there's a nice rotation on the edge and we can probably let Young walk next year). Lemon or Tyson might be there. I'd even take Vega if we can't move (doubt we pay Avila and Dotson next year). Otherwise, 13 is kinda tough.
I tend to agree with you. But I can easily imagine a scenario where AJ or McClendon goes down and everybody wonders why didn't we do the smart thing and use a top pick on a viable backup. Losing one of those two could easily derail the season.

I hated the idea of Ponds before we addressed CB with a vengeance. No shorty CBs.
I’d be cool with it now that we have Watson. But still a bit gun shy having 2/3 CBs short (McDuffie looks even shorter than his listed 5’11). But both of them are junkyard DOGS- which is maybe the more important aspect.

I think quickness is more important than size. Witherspoon had size, but wasn't quick enough to stick to quicker WRs. Ponds has quickness, but lacks size. Give me a guy who will at least challenge a play because he can stick with those quicker WRs.

Yeah But ...

Say the Rams trade down 10-12 spots, into the mid-20s for a 2nd round pick.

That trade partner's 2nd rounder will Also be towards the end of Round Two (just like their 1st rounder was); and would probably be in the mid-to-late 50s. Even if Boston falls, do you see him falling that far?

Now there are probably one or two exceptions. One I can think of is Cleveland which has Jacksonville's #1 which is 24th overall, and their own #2 which is 39th overall. If Tyson and Lemon (my two favorites) were both off-the-board, I could be down with that type of trade (#13 for #24 and #39) but not for Simpson. Cleveland has lots of needs and there would have to be someone they love at #13 to consider such a trade.
I don't disagree and we both have similar favorites. Yes, i think Boston would be a stretch to acquire in the 2nd round, but not impossible. I did 2 mocks the last 2 days one what I'd expect teams to do, and he fell out both times. Many other mocks are similar.

They could do a bit more trading to move around, having 2 2nd round picks and ammo from '27.
