The problem Joel had was he had a face for radio and a voice for print, so that is why Kiper, who debuted with ESPN in 1984 gets credit as people forgot the likes of Buchsbaum and Paul Zimmerman, who was the first analysts they had on when they began televising the draft back on April 29th 1980.

True Story when I was in the military back in 1985, I took a day of leave to watch the NFL Draft. Back then it started on a Tuesday and I asked for a day to watch it at my apartment (@Loyal will kill me for that) and people in my unit, could not believe I was burning a day of leave to watch a draft, not a game.

In fact, it started at 9:00am and around Noon time, my first sergeant came to my place, it was not far from base just to actually see me watching it, I guess he thought I was doing something else. For the record the Rams draft in 1985 started with Jerry Gray in the first round and included Kevin Greene in the 5th. Again, so many were amazed I took a day of leave to do that so I always felt I was way ahead of the curve.
Yep. I remember Zimmerman and I believe St. Louisan Howard Balzer was one of the analysts, too.

Even before it made it to television, I remember calling a sports line every hour that KMOX in St. Louis had that gave up to date draft selections and other sports news whenever I happened to missed the hourly update on the radio.

That's so funny, the magazine Rampages (if you remember that back in the early 90's) had number you could call about the draft choices. I called in 1994 after they drafted Isaac Bruce and the person who answered provided me his stats and said and I quote "He will be a steal." Unfortunately, when the Rams moved to St. Louis, they stopped publishing, but I so enjoyed that magazine.

Horrid mismanagement by Bengals. You have two highly drafted rookies. One won’t practice because you were cheap and you put an injury clause and non compensation into the contract.

The other, you failed to put in bonuses to make the contract competitive with first round peers.

The Rams may wish to reconsider signing rookies to contract until training camp unless there is an agreement to compensate for injuries.
And that’s why they never get over the hump

Gray and Greene were two of my favorite players.

I went back to check the other picks. Two late round future starters were Damone Johnson and Duval Love, with Doug Flutie also selected.

Excellent draft but for the 2nd and 3rd round picks. WR Chuck Scott who quickly washed out; and punter Dale Hatcher, who was good for a short time.

I used to watch it back then too, whenever I got the chance. The entertainment aspect of the draft wasn’t very well developed back then. It was a real snooze fest.

I read that next year Goodell will have the Rockettes on stage dancing between picks along with musical acts just like the New Years Rockin Eve show.

Nowadays you can follow draft analysts that mainly focus on one position. It’s really come a long way. The depth and detail of information is so much better than what Kiper ever did.

They have shorten the time in between rounds now too. Back then you got like 15 minutes, it felt like an eternity. Still enjoyed it though and always preferred Joel Buchsbaum's PFW Draft Guide because he had most of the guys that were actually drafted, that was even hard to come by back then.

There was another Guru back in the day, and I'm wracking my brain to remember his name. IIRC he had a spray tan and slicked back hair. I think he ended up getting in legal trouble?
Anyone know who I'm talking about?

Jimmy G for Olave and a 3rd?
I mean, I wouldnt advocate for trading Garoppolo, his value is immeasurable if something were to happen to Staff. That said, if they did trade him I would think at best he'd garner a 4th round pick, more likely a 5th.
Adding Olave to the mix? How much are the Rams giving up is more the question

Won't happen, but Parkinson, Jimmy G and a fourth for Olave and Rattler might be interesting.

Yeah, I suspect it would cost more than that, but I would probably go no higher than a second

Saints would need a high pick to part with Olave. He's a key for their offense. They're not going to move him for peanuts.

Also that OL is real man. Look at those pieces and they added to it in this draft. So I'd do exactly what they're doing, which is opening up the QB competition and hoping that Shough wins the job. Because I'd want to see if he's the dude, and if he's not then they'll be picking high in a good draft to find a QB.
