With the start of 49ers training camp just around the corner, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the 30-year-old quarterback’s days in California are numbered. While a move might not happen immediately, it seems there is only one unlikely scenario that would allow him to stay with the 49ers.According to Nick Wagoner of ESPN, San Francisco will only keep Garoppolo on its roster into Week 1 if the veteran signal-caller agrees to take a substantial pay cut.
The 49ers owe Garoppolo a $24.2 million base salary this season and his contract carries a $26.95 million cap hit. With the franchise committed entirely to quarterback Trey Lance, committing nearly $27 million to a backup signal-caller is a waste of cap space for the franchise.
Garoppolo’s contract is also part of the reason why a trade hasn’t happened. NFL teams weren’t willing to eat more than half of the $18 million quarterback Baker Mayfield is owed this year, making Garoppolo’s financial commitment an even bigger hurdle.
San Francisco could approach its veteran about restructuring his deal, offering him an adjusted deal with reachable incentives if he is forced into action and becomes the starter. However, it seems increasingly likely that the two sides might ultimately just have to agree to a buyout. At that point, the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers would immediately pursue Garoppolo in free agency.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers open the 2022 NFL regular season at the Chicago Bears on Sept. 11 at Soldier Field.After a 10-7 season in which they surged to the NFC Championship Game before coming up short against the Los Angeles Rams, the Niners are entering a pivotal camp as they transition at quarterback from Jimmy Garoppolo to Trey Lance. The Lance storyline will dominate this camp and, likely, the season but the 49ers have plenty of other questions to answer as well.
San Francisco lost 10 coaches in the offseason, including offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, and have new position coaches at every spot on the offense except the offensive line. They're also going to have to sort things out on the interior of the offensive line after losing guard Laken Tomlinson in free agency and center Alex Mack to retirement. Things are far more stable on defense, where coordinator DeMeco Ryans returns after a strong debut performance. That group brings back eight starters and will look to high-priced free agent cornerback Charvarius Ward to elevate it to another level.
Here's a 53-man roster projection heading into the summer break:
QUARTERBACK (2): Trey Lance, Nate Sudfeld
Is there a chance the Niners keep Jimmy Garoppolo around this season? Sure, but it's unlikely unless it's at a significantly reduced price. The 49ers appear ready to hand the reins to Lance and see where it takes them. Sudfeld is a veteran backup and rookie Brock Purdy is ticketed for the practice squad.
RUNNING BACK (5): Elijah Mitchell, Kyle Juszczyk (FB), Tyrion Davis-Price, Jeff Wilson Jr., Trey Sermon
Mitchell and Davis-Price are good bets to emerge as the top two options, though Wilson should be back closer to full strength a full year removed from surgery on a torn meniscus in his right knee. There will be plenty of competition here as Sermon battles Wilson and JaMycal Hasty for what will likely be two additional backup spots.
WIDE RECEIVER (5): Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, Danny Gray, Ray-Ray McCloud
Samuel's status is the biggest question here. The Niners remain hopeful they can sign him to a lucrative contract, but that remains to be seen. Regardless, they have no intention of trading him. San Francisco has traditionally kept six here but this simply isn't a deep group teeming with options. These five are locks, barring injury, which means players such as Malik Turner and Marcus Johnson will have to do enough to not only beat out the other receivers but convince the Niners to keep six.
TIGHT END (3): George Kittle, Charlie Woerner, Ross Dwelley
Depth behind Kittle is still an issue, though the Niners were happy with how Woerner developed as last season went on. There are a few veterans competing behind this trio and don't be surprised if San Francisco general manager John Lynch looks for another who could earn a spot and contribute.
OFFENSIVE LINEMEN (10): Trent Williams, Aaron Banks, Jake Brendel, Daniel Brunskill, Mike McGlinchey, Jaylon Moore, Spencer Burford, Colton McKivitz, Justin Skule, Nick Zakelj
The Niners probably won't carry this many offensive linemen during the season. Given the lack of depth at other spots, the number of options they have in-house and the question marks on the interior, they could go heavy to buy additional time to sort things out. Most pressing is how they replace Alex Mack at center? Brendel and Brunskill are in the mix, with rookies Zakelj and Dohnovan Westalso capable. That's another position where adding an outside veteran (JC Tretter, perhaps?) remains a possibility.
DEFENSIVE LINEMEN (10): Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, Javon Kinlaw, Samson Ebukam, Drake Jackson, Kemoko Turay, Jordan Willis, Charles Omenihu, Hassan Ridgeway, Kevin Givens
The Niners almost always keep 10 here and with the depth they have in this group, they might even keep 11 this time around. A trade would also make sense here, especially on the edge, where they have six legitimate options. Rookie Kalia Davis is all but certain to land on the physically unable to perform list, which means the battle on the inside among Ridgeway, Givens and Maurice Hurst for what will probably be two spots will be a training camp competition to watch.
LINEBACKER (5): Fred Warner, Dre Greenlaw, Azeez Al-Shaair, Oren Burks, Jeremiah Gemmel
The first four are locked in and one thing to monitor is whether Greenlaw or Al-Shaair gets a long-term extension before or during the season. Both are scheduled for unrestricted free agency after the season and retaining both figures to be difficult. Gemmel will battle Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles for a spot with special teams a factor.
CORNERBACK (6): Charvarius Ward, Emmanuel Moseley, Ambry Thomas, Samuel Womack, Jason Verrett, Deommodore Lenoir
After the first three, the Niners have a lot to figure out here, which is a good thing given their lack of corner depth in 2021. Womack, Lenoir and Darqueze Dennard are candidates for the open nickel corner job, though the Niners could also plug Thomas in outside and move Moseley into the slot in sub packages. Dontae Johnson, Verrett and Dennard all bring veteran experience but the Niners will probably err in favor of youth, leaving one spot for a proven backup. Verrett gets the nod, though Johnson and Dennard could remain on the practice squad. Rookie Tariq Castro-Fields might have to do the same.
SAFETY (4): Jimmie Ward, Talanoa Hufanga, Tarvarius Moore, George Odum
There doesn't seem to be much drama within this group, though Moore's ability to return from his Achilles injury will shape much of how this plays out. Ward is the starting free safety. The other three should battle to start opposite him, though Hufanga seems to have an early leg up. Could an undrafted rookie such as Leon O'Neal force the Niners to keep a fifth safety? It's a possibility and would probably come down to special teams.
SPECIALIST (3): K Robbie Gould, P Mitch Wishnowsky, LS Taybor Pepper
No drama here. These three are locked in, barring injury.
