Well that would be why we hadn't heard anything about him as a WR since that article is from today :D I get messages asking why I'm anti Powell and I"m not. I just think McVay is a different coach than we've had before and people have to contribute on teams and in the offense or defense to make the bottom of the roster. Previous coaches weren't that way. If he can make it as a WR that's great for the Rams because unless somebody over takes him as a return man he's our best there.

ST coord Joe DeCamillis says Tutu Atwell is “much better, much more comfortable, making better decisions” as a punt returner. Kickoff returns “still a work in progress.”
Yeah his basic awareness was what hurt him last year in that role. Which makes sense in a way, since he was not a big returns/usage type in college. As the fourth wideout on a pro roster, though, that type of role is appropriate for him.

Glad to hear he is more comfortable back there and hopefully he can make good decisions when he is backed up to his goal line with that ball hanging and coverage team incoming. That decision making matrix was where he struggled most.

How concerning are Rams' injuries as Week 1 approaches?

There are only five weeks to go until the Los Angeles Rams take the field against the Buffalo Bills at SoFi Stadium – a potential Super Bowl preview between the defending champions and arguably the top team in the AFC. Exciting, isn’t it?

It’s hard not to count down the days until the season opener, but the Rams probably wouldn’t mind a little extra time if they could get it. Not because they aren’t ready to face the Bills, but because they have a few lingering injuries that are taking some time to heal.

Jalen Ramsey underwent shoulder surgery in June to repair an injury he played through for the second half of last season. He tried to let the issue heal on its own this spring, but after that didn’t work, he and the team opted for surgery on June 21.

Ramsey isn’t on the PUP list, which is encouraging, but he also said just this week that he’s “nowhere near 100%” yet. He previously said he has no doubt he’ll be ready for Week 1, and he feels “10 times better” now than he did last season, but it remains to be seen when he’ll even be able to practice.

Matthew Stafford is another player with at least some minor injury concern. He played through some pain in his throwing arm last season and had an injection in his elbow this offseason to help alleviate it.

The pain hasn’t yet subsided and as a result, the Rams limited Stafford’s workload in practice on Monday. He only participated in individual drills and Sean McVay said afterwards that the team is just being smart with him.

“It’s not something that we’re concerned about. We just want to be really smart with somebody that is as important as our quarterback is,” McVay said.

And then there’s Van Jefferson, whose availability for Week 1 is far less certain than Ramsey and Stafford’s. Jefferson is undergoing minor knee surgery on Tuesday, which would be his second of the offseason.

McVay said he had a “little knee tweak” and after seeing a specialist, surgery was the best option. He’ll be out a few weeks, McVay said, and “we’ll see what his availability looks like to start the season.”

The coach called it “positive news,” but his unknown status for Week 1 isn’t all that encouraging. If Jefferson were to miss any time, it would result in Ben Skowronek, Tutu Atwell or Jacob Harris likely stepping up as the No. 3 option in an offense that uses three receivers on most plays.

It’s possible all three of Ramsey, Stafford and Jefferson will be on the field against the Bills. But this isn’t the way the Rams would prefer to go through camp, with three key players either being limited or sidelined altogether.

Even though Stafford is the most important player of the bunch, his injury is the least concerning because he’s still practicing and getting in plenty of work. Ramsey shouldn’t need much time to get back up to speed, being a veteran and star cornerback, but Jefferson may not practice again before the season starts – depending how long his recovery is.

The goal is for them to be back for Week 1, and with five weeks to go, there’s still hope all three will be available.

Training camp injuries are testing the depth of Rams roster

Van Jefferson will have knee surgery. Matthew Stafford is resting his throwing arm.

By JB Scott Aug 2, 2022
As the Los Angeles Rams ramp up their second week of training camp, the team is dealing with a rash of injuries on both sides of the football.

Of course, Sean McVay and head trainer Reggie Scott usually are cautious in their approach to nursing players back to health - so they will manage the workload of each individual as a means to sustain performance over a long 17-game season (plus up to 4 playoff games).

And there’s no better person to be cautious with than your franchise quarterback. Matthew Stafford, who’s recovering from an offseason injection in his throwing arm and an offseason without throwing a football, is being watched closely. According to McVay, Stafford is experiencing some pain as he works his way back to full activities.

Stafford sitting out practice means John Wolford steps into the limelight, and it seems Wolford is firmly cemented as the primary backup at this point.

It’s a discussion for another time, but we didn’t see Wolford play in last year’s preseason and we probably won’t see him play in 2022. Unless Stafford misses time in the regular season - and no one wants to see that happen - it’s almost impossible to gauge what the Rams have in their backup quarterback.

Is Wolford providing a steady presence in practice, keeping the receivers productive without their star signal caller? Or could Wolford also be a contributor to an incredibly strong start by a young, unproven secondary - where it might be more of a story of weak quarterback play than sticky coverage?

These are questions we may not get the answers to for quite some time.

But then there are players dealing with more significant injuries - the type that have been or will be surgically repaired.

Kyren Williams broke his foot during offseason team activities, but he is expected to return by the conclusion of the preseason. It’s not realistic to expect him to contribute without participating in training camp, though the running back depth behind Cam Akers, Darrell Henderson, and Jake Funk is lacking. Los Angeles recently waived Xavier Jones and signed Trey Ragas, formerly of the Las Vegas Raiders, so they seem to be mixing things up ahead of the three preseason games.

Jalen Ramsey played through injuries to both of his shoulders last season and into the Super Bowl, and he opted to have one of those shoulders surgically repaired just before the onset of training camp. Unlike Williams, Ramsey could realistically be ready for the season opening game in Week 1 without much in the way of preparation. His absence in practice may even be a positive - because it allows the young players in the secondary more opportunities with the starting defense: David Long, Jr., Robert Rochell, Decobie Durant, Derion Kendrick, and slot/safety Russ Yeast.

I'm still irritated as F by Williams getting injured. The timing of that is almost comical, given what that position has endured. Hopefully he's had his nose in his playbook and will make the most of the missed time in this most critical stretch of practices. But it's hard to imagine that not setting him back.

It's almost as if the football gods want us to depend on Akers > Henderson as our 1>2 punch in the backfield. So shitty. I wanted to see Williams bump Henderson's ass down to third down specialist where he belongs. Still might happen, but now it will probably require more time due to the kid playing catchup and that's if he's good enough to pull it off.

If both players were going into the season at 100% healthy, I don't see any way Williams would've beaten Henderson out.

Now.. OF COURSE.. the issue with Henderson is health... I just think people forget how explosive he is, how much he's improved out of the backfield as a receiver.. and his underrated power.

But.. keeps getting dinged up.. I get it.

This is our weakest issue by a far margin as far as I can determine.

I am not very hopeful that McVay can come close to fielding an "Effective Running Game" this season. I also will be keeping an eye on that left side of the OL on run downs too.

When you review all our signed RB's with their injury histories ......you will be like:wow2::scream::clock::bomb:.

I'm still surprised the Rams didn't re-sign Sony Michel.

Before it's all over I wouldn't be surprised if they sign a cut veteran RB for vet minimum.

It almost seems like McSnead are a little too fascinated with breakaway speed versus grinding out the tough yards.

Sometimes you need a grinder like Sony Michel.

Glad to hear that. Haven't been watching any highlights, I like to wait until a bit later when you get the fallout from everything but today I keep checking in sigh.
