With The 164th Pick

In The Fifth Round

Of The 2022

ROD NFL Mock Draft

The Las Vegas Raiders Select:

Cam Taylor-Britt

Cornerback

Nebraska

FB_vs_IOWA_0181.JPG

Overview

Height: 6' 0"

Weight: 197 lbs

40 Yard Dash: 4.38

Cam Taylor-Britt’s toughness and physicality is on display every game he plays. As someone who does his best work when playing the run game, Taylor-Britt embraces contact. He’s quick to diagnose the run and insert into his gap when to a nub side. A bit like a bull in a china shop at times, Taylor-Britt throws his body around with little regard. When taking on blocks, he wastes no time pushing the receiver back into the ball-carrier or throwing him aside. He has also shown the ability to blitz and cause havoc coming off the edge.

When playing the pass, Taylor-Britt is able to play a variety of coverages. In press, he looks to be physical with receivers, making it hard to get downfield. He does a good job matching releases when square in press but has trouble getting out of his breaks at times. While he shows good speed when open and running downfield, his hip tightness comes into play when asked to open to run with receivers. With slightly above-average ball skills, he does a good job defending the pass but doesn’t capitalize on errant passes as much as he should. His lack of vision is shown by routinely losing receivers in his blind spot downfield.

With The 165th Pick

In The Fifth Round

Of The 2022

ROD NFL Mock Draft

The Las Vegas Raiders Select:

Sterling Weatherford

Strong Safety

Miami (Ohio)

e0932cce01a6dc723573fc1ea6cedb4d_crop_exact.jpg

Overview

Height: 6' 4"

Weight: 224 lbs

40 Yard Dash: 4.60

The idea of a big-bodied safety who can double dip as a sub-package linebacker is often more of a dream projection than an NFL realism.

As perfect as a 6'4", 224-pound body sounds for matchups against tight ends, few athletes can turn and run with NFL receivers because of hip stiffness and bad change-of-direction abilities. Dallas Cowboys defender Jayron Kearse is the best example of such a large safety finding success in the NFL, and it took him several years to find the right role.

But Miami (Ohio) safety Sterling Weatherford can be like Kearse. Weatherford has an excellent resume, totaling 209 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions, 19 pass deflections and two forced fumbles throughout his career. He's far from a linear, limited athlete, and his production in a variety of situations proved that.

His pro-day numbers confirmed his production wasn't just from a high number of reps. Instead, Weatherford improved his stock with a 4.60-second 40-yard dash, a 6.93 three cone and 36-inch vertical. Each was above-average for the safety position and was especially notable for his size. There are safeties under 6 feet tall who would be happy with these numbers.

Weatherford likely ensured he'll hear his name called during draft weekend after representing himself so well in most drills.

With the 168th pick the NY G-Men select:
Eric Johnson DT Missouri State

Name: Eric Johnson (6 foot 5, 300 pounds)

▪ Position: DT

▪ School: Missouri State

▪ Year: Senior

Missouri State defensive tackle Eric Johnson did not get a combine invite but his performance at the Senior Bowl in early February left a favorable impression on scouts. Then, he dominated his pro day, running a 4.86 40-yard dash. Only defensive tackles Devonte Wyatt of Georgia (4.77) and Jordan Davis (4.78) ran faster. At 6-foot-5 and nearly 300 pounds, that’s freakish athleticism.

“He’s got the experience in terms of on the field but just wasn’t against high-level talent. So there’s gonna be a little bit of a learning curve for him,” Brugler said. “But you see explosiveness and youth. You see the movement skills. And he does a really nice job of breaking down blockers in different ways, whether it’s with power with quickness. He’s of those fifth or sixth round guys.”

Johnson played in every game over his career at Missouri State. His hand size of 10 inches and arm length of nearly 35 inches is ideal for pro defensive linemen. Johnson played at a university that has produced just seven NFL players in its program history. That makes getting noticed difficult.

But he’s used to being overlooked. Coming out of high school, Johnson was under-recruited out of Plainfield, Illinois. He’s been with the Bears for six years and has been a starter since 2017. Johnson used the NFLPA Bowl to gain clout and then parlayed that success into a great Senior Bowl showing, proving capable of playing either a three or zero technique in the pros.

“The biggest thing is identifying translatable traits. Things that you feel really good about that are going to translate to the next level,” Brugler said about identifying late-round sleepers. “And then understanding which players have upside and which players just you know, they are who they are.”

Yes sir, FaulkSF.

With the 170th pick, the New England Cheatriots select Grant Calcaterra, TE, SMU

1649977258796.jpeg

Grant Calcaterra (pronounced cal-cuh-TAIR-uh) was a four-star recruit from Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., before enrolling at Oklahoma, where he was an honorable mention All-Big 12 pick as a true freshman in 2017 (10-162-16.2, three TDs in 14 games as a reserve) and a first-team all-conference selection in 2018 (26-396-15.2, six TDs in 14 games, 11 starts). Calcaterra played in five games with three starts the following year (5-79-15.8) before announcing his retirement due to concussion issues. He nearly started a job as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in August 2020 but decided at the last minute to give football another try. Calcaterra received medical clearance to play, and he was set to go to Auburn but the firing of head coach Gus Malzahn made him switch to SMU to join his former Oklahoma teammate, quarterback Tanner Mordecai. Calcaterra started all 12 games for the Mustangs in 2021, garnering second-team All-American Athletic Conference honors with career highs of 38 receptions and 465 receiving yards (12.2) while scoring four times. -- by Chad Reuter

Give me just a little longer to figure this out. FML!
