Unless Garoppolo is willing to do a new contract as part of a trade (and why would he be?), a trade isn’t happened. The most likely result, the source predicted, is that the 49ers will have to cut him.

With none of Garoppolo’s salary becoming guaranteed until the eve of Week One, the 49ers can wait it out. But they won’t get cap relief without cutting him. And because he’s in the last year of his contract, cutting him would leave behind only $1.4 million in dead money — and it would instantly create more than $25 million in cap space.

Wow! Why keep Jimmy G around unless you are going to play him? That's a lot of cap space to waste. They have a low cap hit on Lance but, not taking advantage of the cap space. I'm not complaining.

Was watching a replay of the NFCCG and after Stafford's INT in the endzone, the whiners were saying "Same old Stafford"

F them, Ram's fans drink their tears, especially Deebo Samuel.
These guys are never going to forget that they got beat in the big game by a team they owned prior. And that team went on to win a title that will always be hanging in LA. Now let's go get more. :startstruck:

How bad was that loss? Just look at how almost the entire assistant coaching staff was let go. The Rams destroyed Shanny's confidence in his own guys. Oh god that is sweet! LMFAO

Frank Gore plans to retire with 49ers soon, hopes to join front office

Frank Gore says he plans to call it a career in the next few months. The longtime NFL running back and San Francisco 49ers icon intends to retire and potentially join a front office somewhere—possibly with the team that drafted him.

"Probably [will retire] in a couple of months," Gore told Heidi Watney this week on Bovada's Instagram account (h/t TheSFNiners). "We're still trying to figure out when I'm going to do my one-day contract [with the 49ers], to sign, do my retirement. I told [49ers CEO] Jed York that I always wanted to be a Niner, so we're working on that right now.

"And then we're going to also sit down, me and my agent, just talk about me working in the front office because I love looking at talent, and I love evaluating talent, and I love ball. And they know that I know football players, what it takes to be a football player."

The 49ers made Frank Gore a third-round pick in 2005. Seventeen years later, it looks like he is done with the grind of being an NFL player, and he will go down as one of the all-time greats.

Gore, 38, ranks No. 3 all-time with exactly 16,000 rushing yards. Only Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton rank above him. Aside from Gore and Adrian Peterson, all 16 running backs at the top of the career-rushing leaders list are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Gore will likely join that exclusive club in five years.

Gore's 11,073 rushing yards through 10 seasons with San Francisco are the most by a single player in franchise history. The running back went on to play for the Indianapolis Colts and then spent one season each with the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and New York Jets. He finishes his career with 81 rushing touchdowns to go along with his hefty rushing-yard total.

Gore has always expressed a desire to finish his career with the 49ers. He continues to love and follow the team even after leaving in 2015.

Gore did not play football in 2021.

Forget Jimmy G. because what is IMO more significantly has been a huge turnover in their coaching staff. You have to wonder how it will affect the quality of the 49er team performance. Anthony Lynn was also hired as Assistant HC and he's shit. The 49er OL has been solid, but now look at how many assistants have left. You have to wonder if AD and Miller caused that. LOL

Shanny is cleaning house.

Courtesy of 49erswebzone:
  • Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel leaves to become the Dolphins' head coach.
  • The Bears hire special teams coordinator Richard Hightower.
  • Assistant head coach and tight ends coach Jon Embree was not retained. He later joined McDaniel's staff in Miami to serve in the same role he had with the 49ers.
  • Wide receivers coach Wes Welker leaves for the same role with the Dolphins.
  • Assistant offensive line coach Butch Barry leaves to become the Broncos offensive line coach.
  • Assistant offensive line coach Zach Yenser leaves to become the offensive line coach at Kentucky.
  • Senior defensive assistant and run-game specialist James Bettcher leaves to become the Bengals' linebackers coach.
  • Quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello leaves to become the offensive coordinator at the University of Kentucky.
  • Running backs coach Bobby Turner is not expected to be with the team in 2022.
Not sure the characterization of all this.. several of the moves were for better positions.
McDaniel certainly wasn't a problem for the 9ers.

With Wagner and, hopefully, some bigger corners who can actually tackle.. the 9ers offense is going to face some major challenges against the Rams D this season, imo.

Predicting how and when 49ers offseason QB conundrum ends

An offseason curveball buckled the 49ers’ offseason plans at quarterback. After they lost the NFC championship game their plan was clear: they were going to trade Jimmy Garoppolo, and they’d have several suitors in the trade market. That path has all gone out the window now after a dramatic shift in the QB landscape and offseason shoulder surgery for Garoppolo. While the outcome of Garoppolo’s offseason is still unknown, we have a prediction.

General manager John Lynch, head coach Kyle Shanahan and team CEO Jed York have all said the club is open to bringing Garoppolo back for training camp and possibly going into the year with him and his $26.95 million cap hit on the roster.

They may all be open to that, but it’s hard to envision them going that route. So how might this play out?

Garoppolo isn’t going to randomly be cut. There’s not enough financial incentive to do that in April. San Francisco will keep him on the roster at least through the offseason program which ends June 16. He won’t be able to participate in those workouts since he is on track to get back to throwing in late June or early July.

That’s the point in time that ultimately matters. Once Garoppolo is able to get in front of teams and throw, it may rekindle any trade interest there might’ve been. Once the 49ers have a deal in place they’ll more than likely pull the trigger on a trade.

If that trade interest doesn’t return, San Francisco at that point probably outright releases Garoppolo to give him a chance to catch on with a team before training camp.

There’s a caveat here though. Lance will get all the OTA reps under center. That’ll give the 49ers coaching staff a chance to evaluate the second-year signal caller. If he struggles and looks like he needs more non-game work, then San Francisco perhaps keeps Garoppolo through camp and has them battle it out to see who gives them the better chance to win in 2022.

Assuming Lance improves and the coaching staff deems him ready to start, our prediction is Garoppolo will either be traded or released as soon as he’s able to throw again. The 49ers will want to do right by him, which means giving him the best chance to go somewhere to compete for a job this year.
"General manager John Lynch, head coach Kyle Shanahan and team CEO Jed York have all said the club is open to bringing Garoppolo back for training camp and possibly going into the year with him and his $26.95 million cap hit on the roster."

Wait -- weren't they trying to convince everybody that they NEEDED Garoppolo because Trey Lance wasn't ready yet? And therefore, that for another team to pry Jimmy away would take a lot of draft capital? And now they're "open" to bringing him back?

Very solid player and solid citizen. Always ran hard and tough, but never saw him as an all-time great. More of a compiler. Very good and dependable, but don't see him as a HOF type talent.

9er fans experiencing that bitter draught we partook in back in the 80s with the rival team having the coach/owner combo you wish you had. Enjoy that shit fuckers. They'll compete with us because Shanny is excellent, but he's not enough to overcome the Rams owner advantage.

I think Gore's a meathead that will fit in well with another meathead in the GM position in SF.

Is Trey Lance ready to lead the 49ers as a full-time starter?

Early on in the year, it seemed like Kyle Shanahan had specific situations and packages for Trey Lance. He’d get in on short yardage or goal line situations and Shanahan would use him as a runner to gain blockers in the run game. In weeks one and three he had seven snaps on offense before Garoppolo got hurt in week four. Trey Lance then played the next one and a half games before injuring his knee in week five against the Cardinals. Lance made an appearance in garbage time against the Jacksonville Jaguars and started San Francisco’s week 17 game for a yet-again-injured Jimmy Garoppolo. Other than that, there have been no special packages, no gadget plays, nothing.

As a Starter

While Lance was effective in his designed packages and showed some growth, there were a number of rookie mistakes. Some of those rookie mistakes are incredibly basic, too.

The 49ers are running a combination of Dragon and Lion here against Seattle. The Dragon concept at the top of the screen has a Slant and a Flat route. The Lion concept has two slants to the bottom. The general rule for these concepts is to read Dragon versus one safety and read Lion versus two safeties. To Lance’s credit, Seattle is trying to disguise with eight players at the line of scrimmage, but there’s still only one safety. That means that the Slant/Flat combo to the top of the screen should be his read.

On the snap of the ball, Seattle bails into a Cover 3 look. That still indicates that Lance should look to the top of the screen. The flat defender to the top runs with the flat which leaves a window open behind for the slant. That’s exactly what you would expect versus that look and why you read that side of the concept. However, Lance is reading the Lion concept to the bottom. He may think that the flat defender to that side won’t be able to get out to the second slant. However, on the snap, he should be able to identify that he has filtered right into that window. This should be an interception for a touchdown if the defender can get their head around.

Mechanically, Lance certainly has a rocket of an arm. It’s one of the traits that teams loved about him coming out of North Dakota. He can push the ball down the field, fit it into tight windows, and threaten every blade of grass.

However, he does still need to work on layering his passes. Almost every throw has heat on it. That resulted in a number of batted balls and an inability to clear second level defenders.

Read Option

Where Lance was really at home was in the run game and in the rollout action that is built into Shanahan’s system. There’s no doubt he adds a legitimate run threat to the 49ers offense and San Francisco wasn’t afraid to abuse that.

There are four general concepts that Shanahan used most often with Lance: read option, QB counter bash, quarterback draw option, and rollouts with the

The read option leaves the end man on the line of scrimmage unblocked for the quarterback to read. If that player feeds into the handoff, the quarterback can then pull the ball and run outside of them. If the defender stays to defend the quarterback, the ball is handed off and there’s one less defender contributing to the tackle. It’s a simple way to gain an extra blocker in the run scheme. The quarterback just has to be a running threat to make it effective. If they’re too slow, the defender can play both the quarterback and running back and isn’t put into conflict.

QB Counter Bash

QB Counter Bash uses the regular counter blocking scheme with a guard and tackle pulling across the formation. What makes it different, is the running back going away from the designed run and the quarterback running the counter scheme. By having the running back run away, that holds the backside defenders who will often try to ride the pulling linemen right into the play. With the threat of being run around to the backside from the RB, that slows those defenders’ pursuit and allows the play to develop for the quarterback.

Counter bash can be called specifically for the quarterback, or it can be a read play. When it’s a read, the quarterback identifies the backside linebacker. If that player fits or flows with the pulling linemen, the quarterback will hand the ball off. If they stay put with the threat of the running back to the outside, the quarterback will pull the ball and run counter.

Quarterback Draw / Bubble Option

The quarterback draw with the bubble option is the most common run scheme the 49ers run with Trey Lance. It’s another linebacker read and is designed to create a light box for the quarterback to run into or to throw the ball outside and stress the perimeter.

San Francisco will use push motion to send the running back outside pre-snap and they’ll also run it with no motion. Either way, Trey Lance is looking at the play-side linebacker. If that player widens with the running back outside, that leaves one less person in the box and Lance will take it on the draw play. If they stay, he throws the ball outside where the 49ers now have numbers.

Rollouts

Lastly, we have one of the staples of the Shanahan offense – play-action rollouts with the Sail concept. Sail has three receivers on the same side of the field running routes at three different depths. That overloads defensive zones and the rollout opposite the direction of the run fake stresses defenses horizontally and punishes them for flowing to stop the run game. They’re simple reads, get Lance out in space with the ability to scramble, and tie in seamlessly to the rest of Shanahan’s offense. Lance still needs some work getting his hips around and throwing on the move, but he looks much more comfortable with his decision-making out on the perimeter.

Final Thoughts

There’s always the threat of Kyle Shanahan scheming up a specific “gotcha” play for Trey Lance, but his base package isn’t very diverse. It can be incredibly effective in short yardage. However, as a true dropback passer, Lance still has a way to go. He quickly bails from pockets, is late on reads, and struggles with touch. The flashes have been there, but the question is whether he is ready to lead a 49ers team that is a playoff contender.

he certainly makes throws that get his receiver destroyed....on that one clip above he had Shittle open for an easy 7 but threw hi and behind him and the DB demolished him and knocked the ball out....

We can thank Lamar Jackson for this pick. His MVP award in 2019 helped push for more running QBs IMO. Lance had that dual threat ability in college. Right now it looks like another project qb in San Francisco. Regards to Jackson, the Ravens would be insane to give him 40+mil a year. But crazier things have happened.

I hope they pay him. I want to see them put a ton of money into a guy who is a RB that can throw the ball. Please pay him. :laugh4:

What's ironic here is the college game responded to the NFL's poaching of QB talent by going with an approach that minimizes time investment. With athletic QBs and beating opponents with speed and better talent they can simplify things and maximize young players going through their program quickly.

Now the NFL is looking at all these QBs who are not prepared for the level of preparation they see on defense. It's kind of what they deserve tbh. Which in turn puts emphasis on offensive minds that can teach QBs.

Where all this is really funny is a team like the Ravens who have an OC that specializes in making athletic QBs look their best. With Roman on their staff they should be able to draft a running QB at some point every couple years and keep a fresh stable of legs who can throw the ball on half field reads and shit in that system. When one of them gets to FA let his ass walk and install the next young set of legs. That would allow you as an organization to sidestep QB pay and load your fucking team with all that money you save.
