The 49ers took the wait and see approach on an injured QB. The fact they got greedy believing they had more than they thought is funny.
Indeed. They fucked around and found out.

What is funny is the apologizing Florio does for both the niners and garappolo. Nobody wants a below average an with a weak and injured arm. It is like he/they pretend the entire league cannot watch game tape and did not see the 49ers trade the farm on an unproven division II rookie so as not to have JG as their qb. As if the entire league doesn’t understand Shanahan makes jimmy anything. The 49ers have no leverage and neither does garappolo. He is a $10M/year bridge qb at best, but none of the tanking teams want a bridge, they want to tank.

and while we are laughing at the 49ers, I laugh at the idea of lance being anything. He is wildly inaccurate, usually something that is innate and untrained. He is a straight line clunky runner who will get hit often if he thinks he is Lamar Jackson. And there is zero reason to think he will be elite at reading and analyzing defenses. He has a strong arm, but that only matters if you are either accurate and/or analytical. you never know, but all signs (especially Shanahan desperately starting an injured jimmy multiple times over lance last year) point to a major bust on the horizon and it is hilarious.

----- "The Rams are the best team in the NFC right now and have enough cap space ($8.8 million) for one more significant move." ---------

....but what's that move going to be? We're all expecting a move, right? They wouldn't not make a move, right?

Shanny needs to get himself to a team with a good owner. He is going to be playing against the house vs the Rams, who have ownership and GM in lockstep behind McVay.

  • Speaking Monday, 49ers GM John Lynch said Dee Ford will not be back with the team in 2022.

Ford's 31-year-old back has completely derailed his time in San Francisco, and the Niners are going to release him at some point this offseason. Lynch said the timing of that is still being worked out with Ford rehabbing his latest setback. Acquired from the Chiefs ahead of the 2019 season, Ford played in just 18 of a possible 49 games since the trade, and only seven over the last two years. Ford can likely contribute off the edge if healthy, but that's a big "if."

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said there's a "scenario" in which Jimmy Garoppolo remains on the 49ers roster in 2022.
So glad we are NOT in QB cluster fuck mode. The only way they come out of this in good shape is if Lance starts and he succeeds. Any other scenario bites them in the ass. Couldn’t happen to a better team.

At least they will have a decent $25 million backup QB. If either of the Rams backups have to start any games I’d think it’s fair to say that the odds of winning are drastically decreased.

Aside from the universal-dislike (absolute fucking-hatred) most of us feel towards the San Francisco 49ers, strictly from a football point-of-view, they are one of the more interesting stories of 2022.

The Niners are loaded and well coached. They are primed for a Super-Bowl-run ... just like the Rams, Packers, Bucs, Chiefs, Bills and a few other teams. Except, unlike all those teams, they are NOT-set-at-QB.

Garoppolo is probably the better of the two ... at the moment; and is good-enough to put San Francisco in the Super-Bowl-hunt for 2022. However, Team Management traded the 12th overall pick in 2021, plus first round selections in 2022 and 2023 (and a third) just to move-up nine spots to #3-overall to select Trey Lance.
S.F. could have stuck at #12 and had a choice of Pro-Bowlers Micah Parsons and Rashawn Slater, or Mac Jones.

The 49ers HAVE to give Trey Lance a shot at some point; and, even assuming he is a major talent, they may have to live with growing-pains. That's usually OK and acceptable if a top-tier-QB emerges in a year or two.

The problem is that the 49ers are built to win right now. Samuel, Bosa, Warner, Kittle, McGlinchey and Armstead are all studs right now. NFL windows are almost always short. Belichick and Brady clearly sold their souls to Satan, so they don't count.

I was listening to sports talk radio here yesterday and unless another team has an injury in training camp Jimmy G probably stays a 9er.

The plan probably was for Lance to take over part way last year, ensuring he’s ready for a run this year.

They have a window now, but the QB is out of sync. Lance is going to play like a rookie, if he plays. Not ideal for a playoff team.

They botched this. The timing is all off. Their only hope is Lance plays lights out, and/or JG covers for him again.

I don't think so -- I think they were bluffing. Nobody was offering 2 second rounders for a mediocre QB who is damaged goods. Remember the coordinated rollout of "Trey isn't ready, so we may need Jimmy next year" in order to drive up the value and asking price of JG?

Well, nobody fell for it. :laugh1:

If Lance was ready, they’d be spending that $25M owed JG.

Forget Jimmy G. because what is IMO more significantly has been a huge turnover in their coaching staff. You have to wonder how it will affect the quality of the 49er team performance. Anthony Lynn was also hired as Assistant HC and he's shit. The 49er OL has been solid, but now look at how many assistants have left. You have to wonder if AD and Miller caused that. LOL

Shanny is cleaning house.

Courtesy of 49erswebzone:
  • Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel leaves to become the Dolphins' head coach.
  • The Bears hire special teams coordinator Richard Hightower.
  • Assistant head coach and tight ends coach Jon Embree was not retained. He later joined McDaniel's staff in Miami to serve in the same role he had with the 49ers.
  • Wide receivers coach Wes Welker leaves for the same role with the Dolphins.
  • Assistant offensive line coach Butch Barry leaves to become the Broncos offensive line coach.
  • Assistant offensive line coach Zach Yenser leaves to become the offensive line coach at Kentucky.
  • Senior defensive assistant and run-game specialist James Bettcher leaves to become the Bengals' linebackers coach.
  • Quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello leaves to become the offensive coordinator at the University of Kentucky.
  • Running backs coach Bobby Turner is not expected to be with the team in 2022.

Was watching a replay of the NFCCG and after Stafford's INT in the endzone, the whiners were saying "Same old Stafford"

F them, Ram's fans drink their tears, especially Deebo Samuel.

When the chips were down, in the most meaningful playoff game between these 2 teams since 1989, score 17-7 going into the 4th quarter. Forever in football lore, the 49's absolutely got dominated, physically and mentally and the Rams stole their souls with 13 unanswered points and that amazing 20-17 come from behind victory. The Rams are now so far inside their psyche, both the team and the fan base have a reaction similar to stepping barefoot on a snake, with the just mention of The Rams or seeing a Rams logo.

Predicting how and when 49ers offseason QB conundrum ends

An offseason curveball buckled the 49ers’ offseason plans at quarterback. After they lost the NFC championship game their plan was clear: they were going to trade Jimmy Garoppolo, and they’d have several suitors in the trade market. That path has all gone out the window now after a dramatic shift in the QB landscape and offseason shoulder surgery for Garoppolo. While the outcome of Garoppolo’s offseason is still unknown, we have a prediction.

General manager John Lynch, head coach Kyle Shanahan and team CEO Jed York have all said the club is open to bringing Garoppolo back for training camp and possibly going into the year with him and his $26.95 million cap hit on the roster.

They may all be open to that, but it’s hard to envision them going that route. So how might this play out?

Garoppolo isn’t going to randomly be cut. There’s not enough financial incentive to do that in April. San Francisco will keep him on the roster at least through the offseason program which ends June 16. He won’t be able to participate in those workouts since he is on track to get back to throwing in late June or early July.

That’s the point in time that ultimately matters. Once Garoppolo is able to get in front of teams and throw, it may rekindle any trade interest there might’ve been. Once the 49ers have a deal in place they’ll more than likely pull the trigger on a trade.

If that trade interest doesn’t return, San Francisco at that point probably outright releases Garoppolo to give him a chance to catch on with a team before training camp.

There’s a caveat here though. Lance will get all the OTA reps under center. That’ll give the 49ers coaching staff a chance to evaluate the second-year signal caller. If he struggles and looks like he needs more non-game work, then San Francisco perhaps keeps Garoppolo through camp and has them battle it out to see who gives them the better chance to win in 2022.

Assuming Lance improves and the coaching staff deems him ready to start, our prediction is Garoppolo will either be traded or released as soon as he’s able to throw again. The 49ers will want to do right by him, which means giving him the best chance to go somewhere to compete for a job this year.
