Remember 1989?

Week #16 - at New England, had to win to get into the playoffs. Done
Wild Card Weekend - had to beat the Eagles in Philly. Done.
Divisional Round - Went to New York and Flipper went right out the tunnel with the winning TD.

Yeah, we can do it again.
Too bad we couldnt have played the 49ers on the east coast next

Con: Short Week Before 49ers

What could be the most important game on the schedule: Week 12 versus San Francisco, will come on short rest for the Rams.

But it's not just a short week. It follows that Monday Night game on the other side of the country. The Rams will get back from Tampa in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

But it gets worse. The 49ers are set up for this game with a Week 11 bye before arriving at SoFi Stadium.

That is just wrong!

Division games should not have one team get a week off beforehand. To add insult to injury Rams have a long journey back home and lose another day playing on MNF. I would file a protest if I were Rams management.

Very nice schedule and very winnable.

1. Potential ice bowls are going to be played in September in Philly and Buffalo.
2. The Bears, Pats, and Jets also potential bad weather games will be home games.
3. This is a very winnable schedule with their Bye at the perfect time right in the middle.

Yeah, I see a max of 4 losses or a worst-case scenario of 12-4. So I think 13-3 is very realistic. Their toughest oppositions will be the Boys, Hawks, and Niners. DaSilva continues to show he knows very little about the team he covers. The only way this team loses to Philly and the Boys is to give the game to them with their own mistakes. In fact, I can see this team contending for 16-0 in the regular season. This team is better than in 2018 with a similar schedule in terms of difficulty.

The Ram front 4 could end up being a top d-line this year. The secondary is underrated IMO without the holes as in other years. They have speed at ILB better than they've had in years if ever. They are young but not totally inexperienced.

Jefferson is an upgrade to Cooks and gives them a top tier 3 receiver unit. Akers looks to be another young Gurley. There is so much talent on offense the o-line doesn't have to be elite, just solid. I anticipate a new scheme offensively that will use the talent they have properly. If the run game returns like I think it will, this offense will be very hard to stop.

The only hole in this team is at K and I think they have some good prospects.

Yeah, it's tough. On the other hand, we get a week off before facing Seattle and the first time we play SF it'll be their 3rd consecutive home game. Might be a little fat from home cooking?

Someone else mentioned we only have back to back home games once. Yeah but we only have back to back road games twice. SF has back to back road games 4 times. Seattle only has back to back home games twice. Both SF and Seattle finish the season with 2 out of 3 on the road.

There's good and bad with everybody's schedule. Both Seattle and Arizona finish against the Rams and niners. Shouldn't be an easy two weeks for them.

Everybody's schedule is tough. Ain't nothing easy in the NFL. Just get ready for the season, whenever it starts and kick ass. It doesn't matter where you play if you're putting up 30 a game and allowing just 15.

From the article: "Coming off that bye, the Rams will only have to leave the Pacific Time Zone once the rest of the season ". Half a year without traveling out of their time zone. That's gotta be a positive.

1st 3 games are brutal. Then the at Tampa Bay (short week) at SF later in the year will be really tough as well. I wish I can be optimistic and say 11-5 or 10-6 but my realistic brain is leaning 8-8
Show me 8 realistic losses on that schedule.

Also interesting - that Bellecheat and the Patriots come to LA for 2 games - plyaing in our house twice in two weeks... I don't recall hearing that happening anywhere (but it could happen in NY I suppose - or in jersey, as they say!)... not that I follow scheduling too closely...

Yep. That's my big positive takeaway from the sched.
Also, traveling from LA to PHX shouldn't even be considered traveling.

I agree the first half of season is brutal, but the post-bye travel is very lightweight.

They will drop 2 of the first 3 at least IMO (maybe all 3 since new defensive staff short offseason lots of new faces). Then they will lose one apiece to SF and SEA. Lose one at Tampa. I can also see us dropping one of 2 to Arizona as well. Home vs NE is up in the air because no one knows how good they will be w/out Brady but they have the best coach of all-time. When was the last time the Rams beat the Pats?? 2001? That 7-8 losses right there. Also at Miami might be a really tough game. I hope Im wrong but expecting a better record than last year is too optimistic

NFL schedule hints at determination to conduct Week One, then reassess

The NFL’s regular-season schedule surprisingly opens with a bang. In a year during which the NFL could have loaded up the first weekend with so-so games and fans would have lapped it up like malnourished kittens, the league has instead loaded nine division games into Week One.

From the banner raising in Kansas City featuring a return visit from the Houston Texans to the first NFC South meeting between Drew Brees and #Tommy to the christening of the new L.A. stadium with a visit from the Cowboys to an intriguing Monday night doubleheader that opens with two of the league’s most storied franchises (Steelers and Giants) to everything in between (Packers at Vikings, Seahawks at Falcons), it will be a great start to the 2020 season.

The placement of so many great games in Week One suggests that the league is determined to play Week One. As one source with knowledge of the situation explained it to PFT, the league is definitely committed to and focused on executing the first weekend of the regular season.

Similarly, the next two weeks after Week Two contain the kind of flexibility that would allow the league to regroup after Week One and, if necessary, to press pause. The teams that play in Week Two all have byes in the same weekend, allowing each game to be postponed to a week when the teams otherwise would be off.

Week Three has no division games. Week Four has no division games. If necessary, those weeks could be postponed until after Week 17 or scrapped. By Week Five, however, the division games resume and lost games would have a greater competitive impact.

Thus, the first four weeks of the season suggest that the league can and will proceed with Week One, and that if necessary the league will postpone or cancel the next week or two. Or, at most, three.

It makes sense. Play a slate of games. Monitor the reaction, from a political, P.R., and medical standpoint. Scrap Week Two and push the specific games to the various bye week, if need be. Move Week Three to the week after Week 17. Move Week Four to the week after what would become Week 18.

Then there’s this: By pushing everything back by two total weeks, the Super Bowl would land on President’s Day weekend.

The psychology of this approach is simple. Give the nation a taste of football, make adjustments if required by one or more of the various forms of potential fallout, and assume that the collective groundswell will force football back into action, with the season resuming after missing up to three weeks.

Regardless of whether that’s what happens, the structure of the early weeks of the season suggest that the schedule was specifically engineered to allow for this possibility. Which shows that the league has indeed thought things through carefully, and that the league has plans that won’t be disclosed until the league implements them.

Could Las Vegas host both L.A. teams?

After the release of the 2020 schedule, an effort was made to match the three California teams with alternate locations, if NFL games can’t be played in the Golden State this season, or if games can’t be played with paying customers there — but can be played with fans present elsewhere.

The 49ers and Cardinals could share the Arizona venue with no conflicts at all. The Chargers and Raiders could share the new Las Vegas Stadium with only one potential conflict. Ditto for the Rams and the Cowboys.

As it turns out, Las Vegas also could potentially absorb the Rams, too. Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal addresses the possibility. A Raiders official declined comment to Bonsignore on the possibility, which is understandable given the NFL’s recent edict to avoid discussing hypotheticals regarding the 2020 season.

Said Rams COO Kevin Demoff: “Our sole focus is on playing at SoFi Stadium, hopefully in front of our fans.”

If both the Rams and Chargers were to play in Las Vegas, the Rams would open the stadium in Week One with a game against the Cowboys. The Chargers would play there the following Sunday, before the Raiders get a chance to break in their new building with a Monday night game against the Saints.

The Raiders and Rams would have a Week Four Sunday conflict. One of the games would have to be moved to Monday night, like the NFL did from time to time when football and baseball teams shared stadiums and the baseball team had a Sunday home game in the postseason.

Ditto for Week 10, when the Raiders are due to host the Broncos and the Rams host the Seahawks on the same day.

In Week 14, the Raiders and Chargers also would have a same-day conflict.

Otherwise, the schedules for the three teams would mesh. Which makes Las Vegas a potential home away from home for both L.A. teams.

Whether the NFL wants three teams playing in one stadium is a different issue. If the stadiums outside California are open to fans, the Las Vegas market’s first year as an NFL venue would see it saturated with 48 regular-season games. That could make the NFL inclined to put two teams in two markets instead of loading three into one.

Regardless, it won’t be hard to play a game of stadium shuffle if California isn’t open for NFL business, or if California won’t allow fans to attend games and other states will.

Rams ‘irritated’ by logistics surrounding 2020 game vs. Patriots

The “Patriots get all the breaks” crowd got some fresh ammunition with the release of the 2020 NFL schedule.

New England will visit the Los Angeles Rams on Dec. 10 for the Week 14 “Thursday Night Football” game. The previous Sunday, the Patriots will visit the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium (also the home of the Rams), whereas the Rams will be in Arizona facing the Cardinals.

And that logistical discrepancy isn’t sitting well with the Rams, according to Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard.

“Heard the Rams are a little irritated they’re away before the Thursday night game vs. Patriots, while New England plays in the Rams’ stadium,” Bedard tweeted Friday. “Patriots will be in their hotel by 6 PT. Rams will be landing around that time.”

So, will the Patriots really have an advantage? It’s hard to say.

In most circumstances, we’d say the team staying on the opposite coast that they’re used to is at a disadvantage, regardless of logistics. However, by the time New England and Los Angeles kick off, the Patriots will have been on the West Coast for roughly three weeks (they visit the Cardinals in Week 12); so, it stands to reason they will have acclimated to life out west. Thus, any logistical advantage is worth noting. Still, the Rams won’t face an arduous flight upon leaving Arizona. It’s not like they’ll be returning from London, or something.

Meh.

Last year we played Seattle on Thursday night and the Niners played Monday, then we were home for them the following Sunday. They had a short week, we had a few extra days (not a bye week, but still) and they came into LA and beat us 20-7.

Rams 'a little irritated' about Thursday night game vs. Patriots

The New England Patriots have one of the toughest schedules in the NFL. Heading into the league's schedule release, the Patriots were expected to have the most difficult schedule based on their opponents' 2019 records. Based on projected 2020 win totals, the numbers are more favorable, but the first half of the season still projects to be the third-hardest league-wide.

There is some source of irritation surrounding one of the games on the schedule. But believe it or not, the complaint isn't coming from the Patriots. It's coming from the Los Angeles Rams.

According to Greg A. Bedard of The Boston Sports Journal, the Rams are a bit annoyed with the logistics of their Thursday night game against the Patriots in Week 14 of the 2020 NFL season. Bedard outlined why in a recent tweet.

So, in essence, the Rams are annoyed that the Patriots are getting a chance to play consecutive road games in L.A. The Patriots are playing the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 13 for a Sunday afternoon game. So, the Patriots won't have to travel extra to play the Rams as both contests are scheduled to be held at SoFi Stadium pending the completion of the project.

Meanwhile, the Rams are playing in Arizona on Sunday afternoon. While they won't be far away, the Patriots will still have a bit more time to rest than their counterparts.

All that said, this qualm is not only very minor, but it's not one that's guaranteed to help the Patriots. They are going to be logging a lot of miles in 2020 with road trips scheduled to play in Seattle, Kansas City, Houston, and Los Angeles and it made sense for the league to schedule their L.A. road games back to back. Otherwise, the Patriots would have to fly cross-country to Los Angeles twice.
Besides, it's not like that stretch of the schedule will be kind on the Patriots anyway. They'll be playing the two games in L.A. before a pit stop at home and then a trip down to take on the Miami Dolphins in a place that they have historically struggled.
This is one of the many rough patches on the Patriots schedule. But fans will have to hope that Bill Belichick can get the team through all those tough contests with a likely first-year starter at the helm in Jarrett Stidham.

Of course the Cheats catch a break! I hate to say it though, they weren't the only ones. This from today's Peter King column...

11. Two games, one trip. I heard that eight teams asked to have two distant games paired so those teams could take one long road trip instead of two. The Chargers (at Bucs, Saints), Rams (at Eagles, Bills), Jets (at Seahawks, Rams), Dolphins (at 49ers, Broncos), Cardinals (at Panthers, Jets) and Raiders (at Falcons, Jets) all got their road requests answered. My favorite two: San Francisco plays in MetLife Stadium in Weeks 2 and 3—at Jets on Sept. 20, at Giants on Sept. 27, both 10 a.m. PT body-clock games. And New England has the rarest of two-game trips. The itinerary:

• Depart Providence, Saturday Dec. 5.
• Play Chargers at SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles, Sunday Dec. 6.
• Practice in southern California two or three days.
• Play Rams at SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles, Thursday Dec. 10.
• Arrive Providence, Friday Dec 11.

Not bad. The Patriots knock off two of their three long trips of the season in a six-day span, and get to practice in SoCal in December. That’s about the best schedule a team could ask for, especially when two L.A. trips are on the slate. Plus, they’ll get to visit Mozza and eat the best pizza in Western Civilization in the process.
