Player Bio

Dallas had issues with ball security during his sophomore season with the Hurricanes and began seeing the school's sports psychologist to overcome the problem. He had four fumbles on 109 carries in 2018, though his explosiveness was evident as he covered 617 yards (5.7 per) and scored a team-high six times on the ground (also 10-85-8.5 receiving, 17-367-21.6 kick returns, 11-191-17.4, TD punt returns). The mental work that Dallas put in before his junior year paid off; he led the Hurricanes in rushing in 2019 (115-693-6.0, eight TDs) and did not fumble once. He also contributed in the passing game (14-140-10.0, two TDs) despite playing in just 10 games (all starts) as his season was cut short by a dislocated left elbow. Dallas played in 12 games as a reserve in his true freshman campaign (41-217-5.3, three TDs rushing; 4-92-23.0 receiving, 2-40-20.0 kick returns). Miami signed Dallas out of Georgia's Glynn Academy as one of the top 15 athlete prospects in the country.

Analysis

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst

Overview

Dallas was a high school quarterback who came into Miami as a receiver and converted to running back during the 2017 season. The production is modest and the instincts are a work in progress, but there are flashes of run-lane feel and downhill smoothness that could be a sign of future development. He has size, speed and a surprising amount of pop as a finisher. His contact balance makes him hard to bring down through contact, but he needs to improve his open-field wiggle. He lacks third-down readiness, but his special teams talent should make up for that. The traits and toughness make him an intriguing upside prospect on Day 3.

Strengths
  • Played WR and RB at Miami
  • Added bad weight in 2018, but slimmed down in 2019
  • Instincts and feel for rush track improved during season
  • Does a nice job of running tacklers into blocks
  • Plus burst with decent getaway juice at his disposal
  • Willing accelerator through contact for heavy forward finish
  • Slippery to tackle and hard to get down
  • Choppy feet and contact balance to keep runs going
  • Potential to become a four-phase special-teamer with return talent
Weaknesses
  • Still learning to hone his instincts as a runner
  • Inconsistent processing and resolving sudden traffic
  • More one speed than patient in his approach
  • Below average setting up open-field tacklers on the levels to miss
  • Still figuring out efficiency of footwork for downhill cuts
  • Doesn't always know where he needs to be in protection
  • Take-on technique will need work
  • Needs better tuck-away ball security

With the 185th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills select.....

Dane Jackson, CB, Pittsburgh
Height: 5-11. Weight: 180. Arm: 30.88. Hand: 8.75.
40 Time: 4.57.
Projected Round (2020): 4-6.

1586732786019.png

3/14/20: In 2019, Jackson collected 43 tackles with 12 passes broken up and an interception. Sources say Jackson could be a solid backup cornerback and special teams player. He struggled at the Senior Bowl, checking in smaller than his listed numbers and not showing good speed. Being smaller and slow could limit Jackson to being a backup only in the NFL.

Man Coverage Skills - Like how well he stays attached on route stems, he's got smooth feet to pedal and stay leveraged over top before flipping and carrying. He doesn't have great long speed and can have some problems with instinct with his back to the football; but his mirror skills are effective and there's room for improvement here.

Zone Coverage Skills - Showcases good fluidity and foot quickness to trigger and attack throws in the air. When he's leveraged over top of routes and charged with attacking into the catch point, he can beat receivers to the football and nail down contested footballs; creating disruption.

Feet/COD - He's smooth. Like his short area fluidity thanks to step frequency and foot speed alike. There's plenty of twitch and pop when he's keying throws or flashing off the top of route breaks. Lateral mobility along the LOS is effective as well, can mirror and disrupt timing of route releases.

Ball Skills - Lack of length can cause some concern when playing in the trail but if he's over the top of plays, his quickness will win as a trump card. Needs to create more instinct to reach for the hands of receivers, not grab on the body and tug to ensure he's able to squeeze the catch point. Less PBUs and more DPIs await him in the pros.

Flexibility - He's not the most bendy or pliable corner you'll watch but there aren't a lot of movement restrictions that will handcuff him moving forward. Has enough hip disassociation to open himself effective when receivers drive into his blind spot or across his hips on initial route stems to transition.

Acceleration - He's better coming down hill than he is in pure foot races. His long speed has a notable lack of a second gear, a hard pill to swallow when watching him try to go stride for stride with speedsters. Will need to rely on combative nature in contact window if he's going to be left on an island.

Defensive Spacing - He sure loves to play into the hip of receivers and create headaches for targets. He's got a good habit in man of riding receivers into the boundary and his short area twitch provides him with short area agility to bait and jump into throwing windows from time to time. Lack of length does water down influence in short zone.

Competitive Toughness - He's almost too feisty for his own good as he plays combative man coverage. Will see his fair share of hankies without a bit more patience. He plays with great urgency — although functional play strength is not an area where he naturally possesses an edge due to lean frame.

Run Support - The effort is where it needs to be, he'll beat receivers to the spot as he sees stalk blocks developing on the edge and look to contest ball carriers. He can be a bit too ambitious from time to time and his eyes seem to be bigger than his actual mobility, which can set him up for some bad challenges and lost contain.

Tackling - His attitude and effort are plus qualities and because he's a fast to flow defender, he'll do a good job getting into the body of ball carriers quickly when he shoots off the edge. If he's working from further distances, he's got some variability with finishing consistency to come to balance and meet ball carriers head up.

Best Trait - Tenacity

Worst Trait - Catch Point Defense

Best Film - Penn State (2019)

Worst Film - North Carolina (2019)

Red Flags - None

Summary -
Dane Jackson projects as a potential nickel cornerback at the pro level. Jackson shows quick feet and good stickiness on route stems to stay attached and contest receivers, plus he offered the needed tenacity to play in the D-gap as a nick. That said, he's somewhat light and heavier receivers will toss him around — complicating some bad habits of Jackson's with his back to the ball. He'll need to amend his grabbiness to reach his full potential as a sub-package cornerback.

With the 188th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft the Buffalo Bills select:....

Gabriel Davis*, WR, Central Florida
Height: 6-2. Weight: 216. Arm: 32.25. Hand: 9.25.
40 Time: 4.54.
Projected Round (2020): 2-4.
4/4/20: Davis is a prospect who generated some buzz in the scouting community and impressed for Central Florida. He has a good build and mismatch size. In 2019, Davis totaled 72 receptions for 1,241 yards with 12 touchdowns. He also produced well as a sophomore (53-815-7). Davis displayed big ability in 2019, putting his draft stock on the map. He helped himself with a solid combine performance.

1586803657174.png

  • Stands 6’2 and weighs in at 216 lbs with 32 1/4” arms.
  • Good athlete with good explosiveness and balance combined with 4.5 speed. Builds up to full steam and can zip when he hits top gear.
  • Good play strength with the frame to grow.
  • Will stutter step to create space off the line of scrimmage, solid burst at snap.
  • Good double moves will sucker opponents.
  • Good hand/eye coordination shows in his ball tracking.
  • Capable of adjusting to catch balls behind him.
  • Will use frame to protect the ball and box out defenders.
  • Extends for catch, using his length to his advantage, shows up in his ability to go over defenders or make his QB right when he’s wrong.
  • Good blocker thanks to his frame, strength, and willingness to mix it up.
  • Adequate lateral mobility thanks to stiff ankles and tight hips.
  • 84% of his 2019 yards came on hitches, slants, posts, go’s, and double moves
  • Adequate release, will need to refine his technique or get stalled out by all manners of press. Too much dancing and too many stutter steps.
  • Adequate separation quickness, ceiling here may be capped by physical limitations.
  • Concentration drops haunt him, could use refinement of catching technique.
  • Adequate YAC threat, not going to generate a lot of yards on his own.
Strengths
Davis has some tools to be excited about when projecting his upside at the next level.

He possesses good length for an outside receiver and has a well-proportioned frame that carries plenty of raw strength in it. His footwork as a route runner has shown some promise, as he can utilize subtle techniques to soften up a defender’s coverage. Davis does a solid job of stemming his routes and attacking leverage points to create separation.

His forte, though, would have to be his body control. He does a great job of making adjustments to the ball and contorting his body in ways that a lot of receivers can’t. This gives Davis added value in jump-ball situations, as his ability to high point and track down the ball complements his size incredibly well. He’s also a proven vertical threat, as UCF often used him to stretch the field with deeper routes. Coming off of a season in which he tallied 72 receptions for 1,241 yards and 12 touchdowns, he carries plenty of momentum heading into the NFL draft.

Weaknesses
While Davis put up impressive yards-per-catch totals in 2019, that certainly wasn’t due in part of his abilities in space. He doesn’t have very good lateral agility, as he doesn’t carry much spring in his step or overall flexibility in his lower body. His breakaway speed is also average, at best, so his ability to big up big gains practically comes solely through his running deeper routes.

Davis is a smooth athlete, but that doesn’t mean he excels at making sharp cuts. His acceleration coming out of his breaks as a route runner could be improved, and he doesn’t do a consistent job of sinking his hips into his cuts. He can stand to play with a little bit more effort, too, as there are some reps on tape where he doesn’t appear to be playing at full speed.
