Unless some a contract(s) get restructured, or a veteran(s) is (are) released/traded, I wouldn't want to be a backup who is making more than the league minimum right about now. The team still has to have enough cap space in case of injuries just to make it through the season.

And quite frankly, I believe this team still might want to sign another free agent or two prior to camp or the season (Barwin, Gallette, etc.).

Good Sunday Afternoon ReekofRams!

It was my understanding that the estimated cost of signing the Rams 11 draft selections plus UDFA's was $4.6 million. Rams currently have 2.7 million. I know...:dizzy: I am not good at math so please help me out with this.

Another question I have is how can the Rams get Aaron Donald under contract this year so they will not have to tagged him early next year, when there's not even enough cap cash now to pay the rookies.....some serious contract Re-negotiations will be needed. Have any suggestions? What am I  missing ?:bueller:

Actually, when reading about those few who are suggesting Barron be cut, weren't some of them referring to next year rather than now ? I'm not sure.
Anyway, it was March of 2017 when I called for NOT re-signing Donald last year, and that went over like a lead balloon. Still, my feelings remain the same today, and it's not because I don't like Donald, it's strictly about the bookkeeping. As I explained last year, forcing Donald to adhere to his original contract allows us to pursue players like Suh, Talib & Cooks, and allows us to tag Joyner this year in a Super Bowl run. The greatest part of this is that next year we can tag Donald for less money than his anticipated cost which would be based on the largest non-QB contract in history. The Rams can either tag him a second time in 2020 or re-sign him then, pretty much keeping him under contract for his remaining years in the NFL. And if Donald should start to fade some prior to 2020, we could always trade him for a kings ransom. While I consider Donald far superior to Suh, Miami was forced to cut Suh because his contract was killing the team. There is no reason to follow that same path when dealing with Donald, this is one instance where both parties will receive great compensation while the Rams can still maintain better control of future obligations. jmo.

Are you joking or being serious? If he was good enough to replace Barron next season that would be the best case scenario for the rams.

.

I'm serious. I really believe that Scales is that good and that the Rams have gotten themselves a steal. And I don't believe that Barron is going to stick with a $10 million cap hit on a salary cap strapped team.

I think we are forgetting signing any rookies of UDFA also results in the reduction of the contract for the player they replace.

I recall saying something similar to my parents when stuck in front of a black & white TV watching stupid variety shows having to listen to Perry Como, Bing Crosby & whatever horror came next. Thank god for rock n roll and a new generation. Now that we are our fathers, we get to complain about hip hop ruling the world, ... and rock has become elevator music. Damn, how did I get this old ?

Only the top 53 contracts even matter .. so UDFA's don't make a diff until after the final 53 are accounted for. ten we need room for the PS and any $$ set aside for emergencies

Oh no. Please don't remind me.
Back when I was catering for the studios, I did some side jobs at his Champaign Village retirement community outside Escondido, Ca. The place was exactly what you would expect, although I don't know if it exists any longer.
Please, no more, I can't take it.

When I was growing up it was Bonanza, then the Ed Sullivan show, and finally Lawrence Welk.

First, the Rams have money already allotted for draft picks and any UDFA's they sign.
Second, what in the world has made some of you think that Barron is going to be cut? They made their choice when they traded Oglestick and kept Barron. If you have ever listened to McVay you'd realise that he won't be cutting Mark any time soon. The way he speaks of Whitworth is the same way he speaks of Mark, that they are both leaders on the field and in the locker room.
Let's not forget he was the Rams leading tackler this last season. Plus it would be asinine to not have at least one returning starting linebacker.
If the Rams were going to cut Mark they already would have. But for some reason many of you have formed an opinion of Mark that he's a waste of money, which is very incorrect. As I mentioned he was the leading tackler, and he did this though he needed shoulder surgery. If you ask me, that in of itself speaks of his leadership, and the fact that he's a damn warrior. Now his shoulder has been taken care of, so just sit back and enjoy the ride and quit your whining. Sheesh!

Well... I heard McVay for 2 weeks talk about being excited to develop Tavon Austin as a receiver...then we traded him yesterday. McVay and the team have been very complimentary about all the players we've moved on from. That's how it works...

I know this debate has happened on here before...Barron has his supporters.... From my perspective, what I've seen the last couple of years is teams running the ball right at Barron... I see larger O-lineman and/or receivers enveloping him in blocks and teams running the ball right by him...

here are just a couple of plays that show a few plays that I'm talking about..

WR down field blocks Barron, and Thompson scores

Fournette runs the ball right at him.... Barron blocked goes down face first...Fournette scores

as happened so many times over the last few years... Barron rushes in he's blocked by a lineman... here Latavius Murray runs right by him ( 36 seconds in)

View: https://youtu.be/4u2lwd_FP-o?t=37s

at 1:41... as happens often... we find Barron bent over at the waste being enveloped by a big O-lineman...again Latavious Murray runs right by him...

View: https://youtu.be/4u2lwd_FP-o?t=1m41s

again..I know he gets a lot of tackles...people who teams run right at, are going to get a lot of tackles...

I've just seen this happening for 2 years now... for his price tag..I feel like we could get an ILB that's more stout against the run....and who is stout enough to fight off blockers...

I'm not saying he's the most stout linebacker, but I doubt anyone else we're bringing in is any better. Now I'm hoping Kiser takes Ogletree's place. I'm also pretty sure Mark was very limited due to his bad shoulder, which by the way won't be a problem this upcoming season.
Oh showing me a video of him messing up on some plays doesn't work on me, because the truth is you can find videos of every linebacker in the league messing. Like when you see highlight videos of someone in college, then you find out later that was their only highlights.
Listen if McVay and Wade decides to keep him, I will trust their judgement over yours every time.

It’s not just McVay that likes Barron. It’s also Wade. If they cut him they cut him - but the dude is a player and I really doubt he is replaced by anyone we drafted or pulled in FA.

The Rams will figure out the cap situation and IMO Barron will still be here. They probably would have addressed his replacement in the third if they were going to let him go.

Barron is a very good tackler AND cover LB. Those don’t grow on trees.
