Intangibles 1

Outside Linebacker Specific Traits
Instincts/Recognition 3
Locates and tracks ball well as a run defender. Above average backside discipline and above average sniffing out misdirection. Gap discipline is a touch inconsistent. Does a good job of tracking and reading quarterbacks when drops into coverage. Will be a split second recognizing screens at times.
Take-on Skills 4
Strong upper body (25 bench reps) but doesn't have much sand in pants and gets moved off the ball by tackles. Matches up better but still gets covered up by tight ends a little too often. Takes too long to get off blocks when teams run at him but active hands and does a nice job of slipping blocks on the move. Tends to take on blocks with correct shoulder. Most effective when he is able to use his quickness to slip blocks or penetrate gaps.
Range vs. Run 2
Closes well and flashes ability to run down ball carrier closing from the backside (Forty: 4.74). Above average though not elite motor and makes some plays with second effort. Slightly above average job of sifting through traffic and not getting caught up in the wash.
Tackling 3 Wraps high and slips off the occasional tackle but length (34 1/2-inch arms) is an asset and tends to wrestle ball carriers to the ground once he gets his hands on them. Athletic enough to make one-on-one tackles when plays with good body control in space but there's room for improvement in terms of consistency.
3rd Down Capabilities 3 Can eliminate some wasted motion early on but has adequate first step quickness (10 yard split: 1.70) with quality flexibility and bend to work with as a pass rusher. Becomes far less effective when he isn't able to win early. Developing hand fighter particularly as a counter puncher and marginal speed-to-power capabilities (VJ: 29 1/2"). Above average motor chasing the passer. Tracks quarterbacks and gets hands up in passing lanes. Has range to hold up in underneath zone coverage and flashes ability to pick up backs releasing out of the backfield.

With the 184th pick in the 2017 ROD Mock Draft, the Miami Dolphins select...Blair Brown, LB, Ohio.
Why I picked him: When you watch Blair Brown play, you see flashes of greatness. He's not the biggest guy, but he's a heck of an athlete. He's a smart instinctual player. His football IQ stands out, particularly against the run. Time and time again he would sniff out the run, sniff out the screen, and come flying downhill to make the tackle for loss. He rarely misses tackles. One of the strongest downhill LBs in this class. He's underrated in my opinion, and his talent is unquestionable. Sure, he needs work in coverage. But that can be learned. Instincts and athleticism cannot.
How he fits: I've already picked Vince Biegel, who should be the day 1 starter at SLB. Lawrence Timmons should start at MLB. Kiko Alonso should start at WLB. Koa Misi is quality starting depth as well. So where does Brown play? He doesn't, not right now anyway. We're going to redshirt him and let him work on his coverage skills. He's the heir apparent to Timmons in the middle and we're going to bring him along slowly.
Notable game:
Here, Brown (LB #33) takes on quality SEC competition in Tennessee and a great running back in Alvin Kamara. Brown shows his instincts and athleticism to identify screens and runs, come downhill and make the play. He does this multiple times in this game, and shows it's no fluke. He's the real deal.
Every pick I've made:
1) Forrest Lamp, OG, Western Kentucky
2) Derek Rivers, DE, Youngstown State
3) Vince Biegel, LB, Wisconsin
4) Eddie Vanderdoes, DT UCLA
5) Blair Brown, LB, Ohio
We also picked up DE Ethan Westbrooks in a trade with the Rams.
If you haven't noticed, it's been a priority of mine to fix the defense.
WELCOME TO THE 6TH ROUND
@Ramrocket is on the clock
@Gandalf is on deck
@shaunpinney keep an eye out, you're coming up

This was the Rams pick before I traded back .
I was so scared he'd be taken. I have a much higher grade on him than a 5th rounder but I thought I could maybe get him later than the 3rd round! The gamble paid off. I appreciate you trading down :yess:
Well, we made it to the 6th round today. I had no doubt we would. I hope you guys give me a lot to catch up on in the morning.
Great pick Ed! My highest rated DE! I guess he'll be Chris Long's replacement!!

I would have taken him at #186 had he still been available. He was a sleeper for me in the top of the sixth... so close...
How annoying must it be in real life?!?
You sir are fired! No no no you can't make the Patriots better! The Pats Draft Recap to date:
RD 2: Chris Wormley DE/DT Gives them even more flexibility. Has a strong base ends who can set a physical edge and then bump inside as pass rushers. His size, athleticism and versatility gives him a chance to earn early playing time and to become an eventual starter I think.
Rd 3: D' Foreman RB I see him being a better Blount. Great 4min back when team is up. Outstanding athleticism for a big runner. Smooth lateral movement. Has feet and agility for slide and go cuts from one gap to the next without a noticeable gear down. Finesses run lanes with subtle shifts and turns. Measured stride length optimizes balance. Swivels hips to swerve away from second level linebackers.
Rd 3: Trey Hendrickson OLB Not a one trick pony. Does everything well. I see him replacing Shea McClellin at some point in the season or in year two. Adds needed depth at the SAM. Special teams demon; blocked a punt, two field goals and an extra point in 2016. Safe to say won't be wasting on the bench.
Rd 4: John Johnson S This was my favourite pick so far. Dude can play!!! Has starting experience as cornerback and safety. Can play high safety or cover the slot. Plays with smooth hips and above average mirror and match footwork for the safety spot. At ease with directional changes in space. Adequate instincts in coverage. Will shade his coverage from high safety based on play development and quarterback's glances. Winning ball skills with very good ball tracking and soft hands. Interceptions don't just come his way, he goes and gets them.
Rd 4: Joshua Hobbs QB Will be red shirted this season and be Boy Wonders pet project. Has the ball handling and release quickness to get the ball out early when challenged by sudden pressure. Able to get through progressions to the check down option. Throws a tight spiral with adequate drive velocity. Eye-catching deep pass accuracy (47.7 completion percentage) with 14 touchdowns on throws 21-plus yards. Displayed good mental toughness.
Rd 5: Marquez White CB Will be Butler's replacement while giving team some cheap snaps. Spies quarterback from quarters coverage and drives early to underneath routes. Shows good awareness of routes around him. Willing to overlap his coverage responsibilities from off-man. Long arms and big hands. Jams with quick reaction time post-snap. Looks to land punch on inside shoulder.
Rd 5: Josh Caraway Edge Rusher/OLB This cat can be be a sub package nightmare! Put him on the field early and let him go get the QB.
Outstanding athlete. Explosive with plenty of twitch. Has sudden, bouncy feet. Plus range as tackler. Possesses speed to win foot race down the line as a backside chaser when unblocked. Fluid hips and good acceleration to leverage wide, flowing runs to the sideline. Gets maximum arm extension when landing the early punch. Intriguing pass rusher. Has an NFL-level burst upfield. Flexibility creates ability to dip and corner the edge sharply. Has breathtaking closing burst to the quarterback as a rusher.
