Former Rams LB James Laurinaitis Suggests 7-9 Was "Acceptable" To Rams

Former St. Louis Rams LB James Laurinaitis, uh, had some interesting quotes today on the, the um...well, here:

That's from Larry Holder, the New Orleans Saints beat writer for the NO Times-Picayune, the leading paper in the Big Easy.

I'll let readers form their own opinion since it's Laurinaitis' words and not those of an analyst.

For reference, the Saints have had seven-win seasons in three of the last four years as have the Rams.

Since Laurinaitis was taken in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft, the Saints are 69-43. The Rams are 37-74-1 in the same time period.

Laurinaitis was released on Feb. 9 after seven NFL seasons all with the Rams.

If 7-9 is unacceptable in New Orleans, they why have they done just that for the last 2 seasons?

I like what what of the comments said about Laurinaitis. "He played behind one of the best DT's in the league and still was too slow". But i wish him well playing on one of the most historically bad defense in the league.

If 7-9 was acceptable then who's fault is that? Maybe one of the leaders of the team and the captain of the defense should take some responsibility for that.

Thanks for making it easier to move on from you. 7-9 is NOT acceptable here, James. That's why you're now with the Aints.

James was stuck in the constant rebuild of a horrible roster and three coaching staffs. For a coach it is ideal to remake the roster the way he wants it. That takes time to accumulate players. Going into win now mode like Devanney and Spags by signing a bunch of free agents doesn't work. Fans may not like it, former players may not like it, but Fisher and Snead were very realistic about how long it would take this team to become competitive. In the end Laurinitis wasn't ever really a part of the plan. He was filler because he would be replaced by the time the team was back to the playoffs. 7-9 probably was fine for the Rams for a few years. Now is the time to start expecting more. Nearly all the pieces are in place.......including a more athletic MLB.

Sorry James. You were just in the wrong time and the wrong place.

Rams may had a hell of a time getting past that point but to suggest they're satisfied sitting out the playoffs year after year is just stupid.Players and coaches have more pride than that.

I don't think JL is suggesting that anyway. I "suggest" 3k and TST have once again mangled an interpretation.

Don't know how this could be interpreted any other way.

"Get here, hear 7-9 isn't acceptable. Awesome to be around that hunger."

Rams weren't hungry but the Saints are. That's how it reads to me. It's a shot at his former team because he's ticked off that he was fired.

"This year, there's obviously extra motivation when you're released by a team," he said. "Nobody likes to get fired. That's really what it is: I was fired."

He had a lot to do with the 7-9 record because of his poor play . Plus he couldn't cover my grandma in a narrow highway

What he says isn't far off unfortunately. He's been here for three coach changes and every time a coach changes the general feeling is it'll take a few years and being below average is acceptable. It's just the way it is in the NFL and was obvious with the Rams while they went through the whole owner change up fiasco. And he was a part of that. One would hope that Jeff "Mr. Average Record" Fisher doesn't find it acceptable but the current regime has obviously been playing the slow game rebuilding a roster from bottom to top while posting below average records so far. What he says isn't that far off. Is it kind of a dick move to say it in an interview? Yes, but not exactly false either.

He's 100% right... It was acceptable in the Lou no way around it.

He's wrong thinking that has changed in New Orleans. Mediocrity can set in anywhere.

Letting him start the last 3 years was unacceptable.....And the Saints will figure that out....
Not surprised he's chirping....Let's see....did SJ#39 say much? Is C Long talking? Only JL55 and Cook......

Stick with the "dick move" comment. James wants to distance himself from responsibility for being part of the 7-9 record. But, as I said before, if he was part of the solution, he would still be here. It's classic blame shifting. The irony is: he is gone precisely because Snisher is not satisfied with 7-9. We want to hit the next level on defense.

He had his opportunity. The Rams gave he and Chris big contract extensions a few years back. Chris and James have been warriors. They played through injuries. But the tape does not lie. They are on the downside of effectiveness.

We shipped 7-9 off to the Aints....and the Cheatriots....and the Iggles...and the gints...and it feels responsible.

Until these comments, I felt bad for JL. He was just average behind the best DL in the NFL.....now??

Yikes. He'll find himself out of a job again in no time.
