THOUSAND OAKS — Trumaine Johnson hopes this isn’t his only successful season with the Rams.

Johnson, the Rams’ top cornerback, understands his six-season tenure with the Rams could be in its twilight, as he is set to become an unrestricted free agent when this season ends.

A few months ago, Johnson seemed resigned to departing from the only NFL team for which he has played, and hinted that the Rams no longer seemed to want him. Now, with the Rams enjoying what is by far the best season of Johnson’s career, he seems to have some optimism about staying around.

“I don’t think tend to think about it too much, but of course I think about it,” Johnson said after Friday’s practice at Cal Lutheran. “I know it will come. It usually comes after the season, so we’ll see. My focus is on this last game and making a run in the playoffs, and everything else will take care of itself.”

Either way, Johnson will be fine. He turns 28 on Monday and still should have some prime seasons left. Even if the Rams don’t re-sign Johnson, other teams will be happy to offer multi-year contracts to the lanky team captain who has 11 career interceptions and has been solid in coverage this season.

There’s something more, though. Johnson is a native of Stockton and has enjoyed having family nearby, and he feels something for the Rams, who drafted him in the third round out of Montana in 2012.

Johnson has yet to sign a second (negotiated) contract, though. His rookie deal expired after the 2016 season, and the Rams applied their franchise-player tag to him. They hoped to sign him to an extension then, but it didn’t happen, so Johnson was tagged for a second consecutive year.

The NFL doesn’t allow for a player to be tagged in three consecutive years, so this is it for Johnson, who is the Rams’ highest-paid player this season at more than $16.7 million, thanks to the franchise tag.

It had been a while since Johnson talked about his situation, and even then, he didn’t say much. During training camp, when it became clear that Johnson would start the season without a new contract, he politely answered questions but deflected most of them and said he was “just here to win games.”

Johnson almost seemed to be hurt, as he told reporters, “I believe the Rams are going in a different direction at the end of the season, and that’s out of my control.”

The saga took a twist at the end of training camp when teammates voted Johnson as one of their team captains for the first time in his career. At the time, Johnson’s “win games” mantra seemed like a throwaway line by a player who wanted to avoid questions. Then the Rams won the NFC West.

For a player who had never won more than eight games in a season, it felt like a jackpot.

“Honestly, I meant what I said,” Johnson said. “I came back to win games. We’ve had a tremendous year. Big ‘ups’ to my teammates. We all bought into what (Coach) Sean McVay was preaching, and from the beginning, it’s been working. The ultimate goal was to win games, and I’m a winner at heart.”

Johnson said he hasn’t changed much in his role as team captain — something he called “a big honor” — but Johnson has been asked to carry a big load in the secondary this season.

Kayvon Webster, the Rams’ other starting cornerback, missed two games in September with a shoulder injury, then tore an Achilles tendon three weeks ago in the game against Philadelphia.

Johnson already drew the assignment of the opponent’s top receiver, but now, with Webster out for the season, it’s imperative for Johnson to thrive. The pressure is on, particularly as the Rams prepare for the playoffs, but Johnson said he’s having more fun than ever before in his NFL career.

“Big time, man,” Johnson said. “When you’re winning games, the whole locker room is stress-free. Because this is our whole life. You put so much work in, just to go out there and play 60 minutes. Winning games is everything.”

The Rams appear to be set up for long-term success under McVay, but this coming offseason will include a lot of decisions regarding impending free agents, particularly in the secondary.

Johnson’s contract is up and Webster has one year remaining, but it’s not yet known whether he will be ready for the start of the season. Starting safety Lamarcus Joyner also is set to reach free agency and the Rams would like to bring him back, and of course, lineman Aaron Donald’s contract situation still looms.

It’s still possible the Rams could come back to Johnson, who won’t be eligible to sign with another team until March. Asked, directly, if he thought a new contract could be worked out with the Rams, Johnson smiled.

“I’d love to be around,” Johnson said. “But again, I understand the business side of it, so we’ll see. We’ll see in these next couple months.”

BARRON CONCERN

Linebacker Mark Barron, who missed last week’s game with an Achilles injury and won’t play in Sunday’s season finale against San Francisco, isn’t a sure thing to return for the playoffs, McVay said.

“He’s such a tough — physically and mentally — guy,” McVay said, “but when something like this creeps up, it definitely concerns you because you don’t really know. Is he going to be available? Is he not? It’s really all predicated on how he feels that day. This is something that you monitor day to day.”

Barron did not practice this week and is on the list of players who will sit out Sunday’s game. McVay said he values rest for some of his players over the possibility of claiming the No. 3 seed in the NFC bracket.

Quarterback Jared Goff, running back Todd Gurley, receiver Cooper Kupp, offensive linemen Andrew Whitworth and John Sullivan, Donald, Barron and linebacker Alec Ogletree will not play, and McVay hinted that players such as offensive lineman Rodger Saffold and receivers Robert Woods and Sammy Watkins would receive minimal playing time.

Would love to keep Johnson although I do think he needs to test the market in order to understand his value with the caveat that the Rams will match because Johnson seems to love playing in Los Angeles especially under Wade and the team being on the rise, however, with the Donald's contract looming, although that really won't hurt the cap situation that bad as Donald is under contract until 2018 and the Rams can tag him for two years after that so Donald's contract should be less than Suh's.

Not sure what else will be out there at CB in 2018 and you factor in even if the Rams draft a CB in the first (like the kid Jackson Iowa) however, going with a rookie is always a gamble....Overall I believe many will look at Tru for his size, but hopefully in the end the Rams can keep him because they lost Jenkins & Rodney McLeod I would like to keep some talent.

If the price is right then I am all for him coming back. I just don’t want to jeopardize the Rams signing other players to contracts because they committed too much to Trumaine Johnson.

Great topic....:argue:

What would you guys pay Tru to stay? Realistically....He made $16.7 this year...that's millions....

Me...I think he's worth about $5 mill a season. Saw a couple corners on tv these last few days...one was wearing #18....pretty sure there are others...I like Tru....really do...but I believe pressure is more important.:flanders:

I would probably go in the range of $8-10 million a year. I’m leaning more towards 8 though. Not because I do think he’s worth more, but I fear going over 10 million doesn’t leave the team with enough cap space for other players.

I give him $11-12M a year for 4 years. Has he given up a TD this year? He has incredible ball skills for a guy his size. Besides Marcus Peters and Casey Hayward, I can't think of any CBs off the top of my head that are on his level. Even when he doesn't get a INT, he can locate the ball and deflect. He's been making great plays, just hasn't finished a handful of them. Good to great CBs with size don't grow on trees. For every Tru, there are 10 Sean Smith's, keep him!
Lamarcus needs to be signed as well!

Keep him his size, ball skills and tackling make him an asset that is needed against some of the bigger WRs and TEs and WP can match him up if he feels the need. With the Rams winning now it is going to make it easier for KD to negotiate some of the FA resignings we are looking at. Money talks but Championships are forever.

Can't resign everybody who is a Ram UFA in March......TJ has priced himself way out of his legitimate worth. He is our best corner but he is far from being worth what he has been getting theses last 2 seasons. Trumaine is by far the best corner on the market this 2018 FA'cy with Malcolm Butler being the next best. Les Snead is a wizard @ drafting starting DB's. This organization would be foolish not to utilize this wizardry.

Top 2018 UFA CB should easily bring approx a 5 yr 75 million with around 30 million in guarantees. I would never offer TJ that kind of $$$. IMO Thinking that Trumaine would sign here for much less, is just wishful thinking when he can go up to the Bay area in his home state & get his millions. But when your the #1 on top of all others you will get it what your asking.

I would use those cap funds to beef up our secondary with 3 resigns instead ...resign starting UFA Corner NR-C, Starting UFA safety Lamarcus Joyner & our 3rd safety UFA Cody Davis. Then go real smart on the economy side in the Draft & get our new Trumaine Johnson with our 3rd selection & our next EJ Gaines with one of our three 6th round selections. To go with Kayvon Webster ,Troy Hill & Kevin Peterson

hopefully the large sum he made off the franchise tag these past 2 years helps him take a discount. id sign him in a heartbeat at 12m or less. anything more would depend on other factors

This is all about what Tru will accept. And my recommendation to him is to take the #2 CB level money and ride the rest of his career out with the high end coaching and organization that the Rams now have.

So many guys want to run for the most money. But then they're miserable in losing situations, get cut a year or two out, etc. Stay where you know it's good, where you have the right guys in place. Devil you know baby. Sign the dotted line and ride it Tru.

I have no idea how the negotiation go or what is allowed that kind of insider stuff would be interesting but I doubt all the details would ever come out.

If it is allowed and I was doing the talking, I'd tying to bring all of the players who are coming up for contracts over the next 3 years and lay out a plan for how to manager the signings and possible franchise tags. Let them know the overall plan to keep the core together as they are building toward the window that is coming open for the franchise.

Doing individual negotiations seems too difficult and they all end up knowing what the others get anyway. Produce the best plan for the organization and try to explain how they can all reap the benefits of GREAT contracts, life long financial security and playoff and SB winning teams.

Love our guys....but realistically, some team more desperate than us will give him #1 CB money. We wont be able to match, nor will we want to. Wade probably already has a couple candidates in mind. We can go get Trumaine Johnson output from someone else for half of Trumaine Johnson money.

Too bad he won't consider the other end...go for the cash and end up like Janoris Jenkins. Or he could take a little less and maybe have a shot at a few different playoff runs.....*shrugs
