I’ll start this by saying I’ve never been what you would call a “sound” sleeper. I’ve always awoke easily, and have always been the first one out of bed in my home, never in my life have I needed an alarm clock.

I typically am in bed by 10pm, sometimes a little earlier, sometimes a little later. But I’ve always woke up about 5:30-6am religiously.

Well, every now and then I’ll have these spells where I just sleep like shit. I’ll wake up a ton throughout the night, and I’ll wake up at 3-4 in the morning and not be able to fall back to sleep. It’s like I’m wide awake.

Well, almost 6 weeks ago I had a pretty painful surgery that kept me horizontal for 2 weeks. I slept on the couch for about 12 of those days to prevent moving around. I was on Percocet every 4 hours and the dr had me taking 4 Benadryl to sleep at night. And I slept like a fucking king. Til sometimes 8am. That may seem early to a lot of you, but I have never, a single time, as far back as middle school, slept past 6:30. So, to me, that’s late.

Well ever since going back to my bed, I cannot sleep for shit. I wake up about 3-3:30 every damn day and just lay there trying to fall back to sleep until I give up and just go to the living room and watch some TV. Neither the Benadryl or the OTC sleeping aids I bought seem to help much. I may get to sleep til 5 but it’s still very restless.

I had a follow up appointment last Wednesday for a different health issue and brought this up to the doctor but found no answers. He said it sounds like sleep apnea but since I’ve lost so much weight (71lbs—booyah) and have never snored, it doesn’t seem likely. The seriousness of the other issues quickly took back over the conversation and I found myself without answers.

Does anyone else have issues like this? If you do, what are some things you try? I’ve tried cooling down my room, turning the fan on different speeds, different blankets, pillows, sleeping pants, shorts, boxers. Nothing. I know it’s not a comfort think at this point.

Medical isn’t legal in Missouri at this point, not sure that this would be an option. Will definitely look into it though.

I have the same problem. For me it stems from stress, or something on my mind. During the day I'll try to bottle it up and forget about it but when I'm going to sleep it creeps back in. I'll sleep ok for a bit then wake up around 3-4am wide awake. Basically my mind has been awake all night going over something. I normally go downstairs to the couch until 8. Now I try to talk to my wife or a friend about what's on my mind, it seems to help usually. I also know that if I have more than 3 drinks pretty much the same thing happens, only I'm hot and sweaty. I don't know if any of this applies to you, but I hope that it helps.

I hear ya man.
I went years of working a messed up split schedule. Working 2 am--6 am then another shift from 10 am--7 pm.
I was not a great sleeper before that, but, after several years of that shift it messed me up.
I would go to sleep easily but would wake up 6 to 8 times a night.
I lost some weight and cut out soda and that helped a lot.
Cutting way down on refined processed carbs (bread, pasta, chips etc) and intaking good anti inflammatories (black seed oil, CBD oil) seemed to help as well.
My sleep is now much, much better. Usually fall asleep between 10 and 11 pm. I still wake every morning with no alarm between 5 and 6 am, but, my sleep is much better.
Wake up refreshed most mornings.

I never really even considered stress. I have a stressful occupation but typically I don’t take that home with me. I have a good wife and great kids, I make a comfortable living and don’t sweat financials too much. I have some health concerns but recently got some uplifting news on some of that. Up until last week I could have put it on that, but since then, it hasn’t gotten better. I’m not sure what on earth I could be stressed about. Maybe it’s just deeper than I know. But you have definitely given me something to think about

CBD oil is pretty much legal everywhere...look into it

https://www.thesleepdoctor.com/2017/08/10/understanding-cbd/

I did earlier, it seems to be a very grey area. Says that basically it is still illegal unless marijuana is legalized. Some dispute that if it’s under .3 thc that it falls under hemp and not marijuana, but the arrivals I keep reading still suggest that it’s not legal. Idk. I’m a guy that’s never even smokes a joint. Lol so I don’t know if this would count as cheating for me, morally. If I’m gonna cheat, I wanna binge and get some edibles lol.

Also, @RamFan503, shitty as always! Turning 34 in a couple weeks. I sure as shit feel like an old man.

Melatonin

I am a very light sleeper. The first two hours or so, I am out, but after that I tend to wake up a lot. When I wake up earlier than I'd like, I pop a melatonin, and I can go right back to sleep. It's all natural, and vegan, and I've never had any drowsiness after I wake up. It's worth a shot.

I use mediation recordings for sleep. There's a decent one on Audible. Old people voices have always knocked me out though. Substitute teachers were the worst.

Anyway, it really helped me learn to clear my head and focus on falling asleep instead worrying about falling asleep. Unless I really feel like knocking out hard, I don't need the tapes anymore.

I've also considered duct tape my children to their beds as they are a leading cause of me walking up at 3AM, but my wife keeps saying something about laws and abuse or some such.

If you don't find a solution, get a Kindle and keep it on the nightstand.. I'll often read a bit to help go to sleep and if I wake at 3 am feeling wide awake, I'm able to read a little without turning any lights on. Stress is a major factor of waking inexplicably in the middle of the night. Unsettled issues in your life will rouse you consistently. I've been waking up all this week. I work rotating shifts every week and only work day shift once a month so I really never sleep adequately. Good luck!

@Juggs join a gym and get into it often, it will be the best thing short of a prescription sleep aid and has lots of other benefits as well. Also look into replacing your mattress and if you need help I know pretty much all there is to know about that topic.

Just an FYI if you are taking any prescriptions let your Dr. know you take meletonin it can interact badly with some other stuff. No joke.

And there is no real hard science that says it works..........now that I have ruined your placebo for you you can thank me LOL.

What’s your bed like? They have adjustable frames for beds where you can elevate your head and/or feet - it makes a huge difference. It’s expensive but your bed and your shoes are two places not to be cheap.
