Interesting to see where the money goes ??
The fact certain players get paid so much really hurts the blue collar player who help teams find a way to win in clutch.

Well, I'll eat crow on that. I still don't like the Scott pick, but he's making the team over Countess.

Not gloating... Well maybe a little, but seriously the roster will consist of 6 or 7 highly paid players, a few in the middle range, then a bunch of cheap help.

They can not afford reserves and special teamers making $2M a year.

I wonder if McQuaid could be a casualty next year? Tough to pay a long snapper a lot, with again what the roster looks like. I am sure Bones can scout and find another LS.

Snead and his ability to hit on his draft picks and a few UDFA's will determine how long the window stays open. Can we be like NE and Pittsburgh and be contenders every year, or will they fall off like past contenders that could not keep it going like Seattle and GB?

Hill has more value as a CB, I am thinking Christian is next.

Rapp plays same role and Travian Howard also could fill his role.

At $720,000 and 3 years in, i'm guessing Christian is already at or near vet minimum.

Hill would bring a lot more CAP relief.

Hill might be in real trouble if Kevin Peterson returns to form in training camp and preseason.

This is the way to keep the winning going. Cheaper labor replaces the fringe/part time players. Rams doing what they have to do.

The past of Kevin Peterson......

KP signed a 3 yr contract with Chicogo May of 2016. On Sep 2 2016 he was waived by Chicago. On Dec 27 2016 KP signed to the practice squad by the Rams. On Jan 3 2017 he signed a reserve/future contract withthe Rams again. On Sep 4 2017 Rams waived KP & the on Sep 17 2017 Rams signed to the active roster. Waives later & then signed to the PS again. On Nov 23 2017 KP signed to the active roster by Rams. KP went on to play in 6 regular season games in 2017.

In the Game vs. San Francisco 49ers (12/31): Made his first career start at cornerback...intercepted 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo twice, including one returned 38 yards to the San Francisco 22-yard line...also had seven tackles (three solo) and five passes defensed...recorded one special teams tackle... KP went on to play in the play off game against Atlanta.

In August of 2018 Kevin Peterson suffered a season-ending knee injury in the Los Angeles Rams preseason opener. The Rams a placed Peterson on injured reserve. He tore an anterior cruciate ligament against the Ravens .“Really hate that for him because he’s a guy that’s continued to progress,” McVay said after practice. “He’s one of those guys that seems like he’s actively always getting his hands on the ball in practice and then he has those couple picks in the game last year against San Fran. So, it’s a shame. We feel bad for him, but he had good spirits. He’ll get his surgery and he’ll be back.”

According to Rams Insider Myles Simmons, Peterson was having a solid camp and was looking to increase his contribution to the Los Angeles secondary in 2018. But after his performance last season he should be able to find a spot on an NFL roster once he recovers. On March 12 2019 KP Signed a 1 year $570,000 contract with Los Angeles Rams. In 2020 KP will be an ERFA. :sneaky:(y)

Kevin Peterson, CB, Oklahoma State: Early Scouting Report

https://nflmocks.com/2015/08/04/kevin-peterson-cb-oklahoma-state-early-scouting-report/
(5’11”, 195 lbs) Senior cornerback who was named to the preseason 1st Team All Big 12 squad after a productive season in 2014 with 13 pass breakups and 2 interceptions. He showed last year why he is one of the most feared cornerbacks in all of the Big 12 if not the nation.

Pros
Definitely the best part of Peterson’s game is his physicality and his ability to get his hands on a receiver in press coverage at the LOS. He plays with violent hands yet with patient feet that won’t take a false step in his backpedal which puts him at an advantageous position to where he derails the receiver off of his path. Even in run support, his passion and physicality does not stop. He is a reliable tackler with that occasional chance of laying the lumber on his opponent if given the opportunity.

Outside of Vernon Hargreaves III, Kevin Peterson is the best true shutdown cornerback in man coverage. It does not matter where you put Peterson. You can put him in either Off Man or Press and he will accept any challenge on his island to shut them down. The most noticeable visitor on KP island is top draft pick Kevin White. Peterson mugged him at the LOS as well as mirroring his routes in Off Man. If you are looking for pure man coverage skills at the cornerback position, KP is your guy.

As I mentioned earlier about his play strength in both coverage and run support, he is a terrific open field tackler. As he reads his run/pass keys, he can easily shed the block with disruptive hands, and then in turn, disrupt the ball carrier from getting any more extra yards with a safe tackle showing low pad level. His physicality definitely transitions to the run game as he will rarely miss an open field tackle when given the opportunity. I can easily say that he is probably the most fundamentally sound cornerback in college football today.

After just mentioning his fundamentals, his football IQ and footwork are outstanding as well. He never takes a false step in his reads and backpedal, and will react to get to the receiver’s hip pocket. Unlike most young cornerbacks, he knows when to undercut routes to go for the ball, and when to be a bit conservative. Has that kind of discipline to him that most players his age don’t have.

Cons
– I have been on record to say that Kevin Peterson is not the greatest athlete at the cornerback position. With the athletic freaks at the NFL level, he may struggle against the speed burners like TY Hilton and DeSean Jackson in Off Man. He has played very well against top competition in the Big 12, but I question his long speed to cover against those kinds of deep threats.

– Peterson’s ball skills are fairly average. He can be a bit inconsistent with his hands and tracking of the ball, but this knock is definitely not keeping me from sleeping each night. I would like him to read the WR’s eyes better so he can understand when the ball is going to be there, but he has showed enough for me to be too concerned here. He just needs to improve here a bit.– I have already talked about his rare reaction skills due to his fundamentally strong feel for the game, but he will give up some separation in Off Man if he either misreads or is slow at reading the situation. When this happens he either leaves a gap for the receiver to throw it in or he will grab.

NFL Comparison
Sam Shields/Jonathan Joseph

* Both of these two players are not the biggest guys or most athletic at their position, but will body you up in man coverage and have the ability to take any certain receiver out of a game entirely. That is what I see with Kevin Peterson as he has the cover skills of a physical, shutdown cornerback that can play both Off and Press. Both Joseph and Shields are Pro Bowl cornerbacks in the NFL, and I believe Kevin Peterson can reach that kind of level and production if he keeps improving his technique and ball skills as Oklahoma State’s most reliable player on defense.

My summary: In his rookie season KP had a full training Camp & preseason with the Bears he was released soon after the regular season began. In 2017 KP became a Ram where he experienced two minicamps/ Training Camp/ Preseason & most of the 2017 regular season either on the PS or the Active Roster. In 2018 as a Ram he went through OTA's & all of Training Camp before being injured. KP will enter his 4th Training Camp this season. He should be fully recovered from the ACL tear early August of 2018.

Stupid CBA. Only looks after the superstars, who need the least help of the lot.

It seems I am in the minority here, but good riddance to Countess. I seem to recall Countess having a number of vicious cheap shots to opposing players. Football is a violent sport, and it is also very fast, so sometimes things that might look bad are actually just accidents. Bang-bang plays. A player might be going for a totally clean hit, but a subtle change of direction from his target occurs, it is too late to adjust, and all of a sudden the tackling player is screaming straight towards the head of the hit recipient. I try to give players the benefit of the doubt. But in very limited snaps, Countess somehow manage to accumulate several cheap shots, and they all looked pretty intentional and easy to avoid.

I, for one, would rather not have that kind of player on the roster. Especially when that player is used only for depth purposes and doesn't contribute too much to begin with. And that is before we even get into all of the penalty yards he cost us for personal fouls! have nothing against Countess on a personal level. But he is one football player I could do without.

The Eagles have zero depth at safety and could also use his return abilities. He will make their team.

I see your point.

But on the flip side it's also keeping rookies from wrecking your cap. Imagine the scenario Oakland would be facing with three first rounders.

This CBA is poorly put together and has backfired from what the union expected. I think they will fix it when they redo it, and I expect them to toy with the idea of a max contract like the NBA has.

yeah, the rookie pay scale was much needed.

i was talking about the poor restricted free agents getting screwed around by teams. if a team wants to restrict you from entering free agency they should have to pay you some guaranteed money to soften the blow. the way they can cut them right before the regular season begins with no financial compensation is criminal. the players union should be ashamed of itself the way it screwed these players.

I expect some kind of work stoppage during the next CBA. Players Union and Owners are far apart on a lot of issues. There's going to be a lot of fussing from both sides.
