Three Keys: Rams at Raiders, preseason week 1

The Los Angeles Rams officially kick off their 2019 preseason slate Saturday evening against the Oakland Raiders at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT in Oakland, and you can get the details how to watch the contest here.

Ahead of the game, theRams.com examines three keys for L.A.

1. How does the offense look with Blake Bortles at quarterback?

The former No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft signed a one-year deal with the Rams in March after spending his first five seasons in Jacksonville.

During that time, the UCF product started in 73 of the 75 games he appeared in and reached No. 2 in both career passing yards and touchdowns on the Jaguars’ all-time lists.

Brought in to back up starter Jared Goff, Saturday will be Bortles’ first live game action with his new unit and provide an opportunity to develop a deeper rapport with his new teammates, particularly the second-team offense. Rams head coach Sean McVay said Bortles will play “a couple of series” against the Raiders.

“I look forward to it,” Bortles said. “It’s an opportunity for me to get a new resume on tape and for us, the guys to get an opportunity to play to go and kind of build that resume and get some good plays and some good work on tape and get a little bit of game-like atmosphere.”

2. Will the Rams play their young offensive linemen?

Second-year center Brian Allen and second-year left guard Joe Noteboom are slated to start at their respective positions for Los Angeles in 2019, according to its unofficial depth chart, replacing offseason departures John Sullivan and Rodger Saffold.

Given those circumstances, especially the shoes both have to fill, it would make sense for L.A. to give Allen and Noteboom some reps on Saturday in order to build cohesiveness along the offensive line. At the same time, not many starters on both sides of the ball will likely see snaps.

McVay told reporters Thursday he would have a conversation with run game coordinator Aaron Kromer before deciding whether or not the interior linemen will play. If both players do see action, it will be limited.

“We’re going to assess this tape, we’re going to see what kind of work they’ve gotten in,” McVay said. “That’s something that we have not decided on. If they do, it’ll just be a couple series.”

3. How is the inside linebacker battle between Micah Kiser and Bryce Hager shaking out?

Mark Barron’s signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers in March put one of the Rams’ starting inside linebacker spots up for grabs heading into the 2019 season.

Although Kiser is projected to start alongside Cory Littleton based on the team’s unofficial depth chart, both Kiser and Hager have been alternating with the first team defense throughout training camp and thus given every opportunity to make their case for the job.

According to McVay, both players will receive snaps on Saturday against Oakland.

“Micah (Kiser) will play a quarter, we’ll get (LB) Bryce (Hager) in there as well,” McVay said.

Five players to watch in the first preseason game against the Raiders

The Rams have plenty of stars who will play throughout the regular season. But I’m the upcoming four exhibition matchups, very few of the club’s 22 offensive and defensive starters will see a snap.

With that in mind, here are five players to watch in this first preseason game against the Raiders.

1. QB BLAKE BORTLES

Quarterback Blake Bortles will make his Rams debut against the Raiders on Saturday. Los Angeles brought in the former Jaguars starter to be the club’s backup, and as such head coach Sean McVay said Bortles will play a few series to start off the preseason. Bortles’ experience should help the Rams’ second-team offense, which sputtered a bit in last year’s preseason. On Thursday, Bortles voices excitement for his first appearance in horns. It’s worth nothing that this is essentially Bortles’ first piece of audition tape for clubs that might have potential interest in him as a starter down the road.

2. WR MIKE THOMAS

A 2016 sixth-round pick, wide receiver Mike Thomas has put together a strong training camp as he begins his fourth year as a pro. Thomas has been a special-teams standout throughout his young career, but he’s made an impact at wide receiver in this camp — particularly with Bortles as his QB. Look for the Bortles-Thomas connection to be strong throughout the preseason.

3. S TAYLOR RAPP

Rookie safety Taylor Rapp has already made an impact in his short time with the Rams, making a number of plays in the joint practices with the Chargers and Raiders. The versatile safety has been in the box and deep throughout the course of camp. He’s known as a solid tackler, so look for him to show that as he gets his footing in the league.

4. RB DARRELL HENDERSON

A third-round pick out of Memphis, running back Darrell Henderson has been impressive throughout the course of camp. He’s displayed strong running ability, and has flashed with his hands in making catches out of the backfield. Given that it seems the coaching staff has a role for him in the regular season, he may not do too much in the exhibition matchups. But given that he averaged 8.9 yards per carry in his last two seasons at Memphis, any one of Henderson’s touches could turn into an explosive play.

5. OLB TREVON YOUNG

The Rams picked up outside linebacker Trevon Youngas a sixth-round pick out of Louisville last year. He didn’t play much in his rookie season, with his most impactful play coming against the 49ers in Week 7 with a fumble recovery. But he’s flashed over the last few weeks, displaying some pass-rushing ability off the edge. He could be a thorn in the side of Raiders offensive linemen and quarterbacks on Saturday.

The game will also be replayed right after it's over at 9pm PST on NFLN, at least according to the spectrum guide.

With reserves ER/OLB'ers Og Okoronwko & Justin Lawler unhealthy & Samson Ebukam returning from Knee surgery & as of late having hamstring issues...... There is no better time for this young pass rusher to shine!

Young had a few moments in 2018 but that's it. He has been unhealthy for several seasons in college & was still not 100% last season.

He has his chance to step up. No Obo in practice. No Lawler cause of injury. I forgot about him and his injury (hip in college). Good size at 6'4" around 260 Lbs with long arm length at 33 3/4 inch. Draft profile link to refresh your memory.

I can offer up a counter argument that he has not had a full chance to step up Ram65.First was he was a Medical Red Flag @ the time of the NFL draft. Yes he did have a chance last TC & was released but did return to secure a roster spot later.

Young also was one of many who were in contention early for a roster spot. Veterans Morgan Fox, Dom Easley, Matt Longacre, Ryan Davis were fighting early for a spot @ ER/OLB'er. Other youngsters like Samson Ebukam, Justin Lawler, Brian Womac, Ejuan Price, Marcus Martin, Carlos Thompson & Garrett Sickels were here.

That's a large amount of players fighting it out for four roster spots.

If Mike Thomas can hold on to the ball, he should easily make the team as a 4th wr

My main focus will be in 3 areas: OL, LBs, and Secondary. The Ram LB corps was their weakest area last year in my mind. After the starters, it dropped of and that has to be addressed!

4th? As in ahead of Reynolds? I like Thomas a whole lot, but that seems pretty wild

Agreed. I'd say Reynolds already has #4 spot wrapped up. He's really very good.
