Offseason Outlook: What are the options for Eric Weddle and the Rams in 2020?

After the Rams were eliminated from playoff contention their Week 16 loss to the 49ers, safety Eric Weddle's eyes began to well up as he spoke with reporters the next day, becoming emotional as thought of retirement crossed his mind during that conversation.

The 13-year veteran understands his future his uncertain, and he understands the rise of rookie Taylor Rapp and return of John Johnson III from injury could make him expendable. It's a possibility not only for those reasons, but because he has a team option in his contract for 2020.

If the Rams decline to pick it up prior to March 17 – the end of the current league year – he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

"I know how teams go, and organizations, and to go in that direction like that makes sense to not keep the old guy around," Weddle said on Dec. 22. "Like that’s the reality. If I’m the GM, I’m smart. I know how those things work, so I’m just enjoying this week and whatever the decision, whether it’s me or them, it’s all good.”

When Weddle spoke to reporters after the season finale against the Cardinals, he said he had not made an official decision yet on retiring. The decision on the Rams moving forward with Rapp and Johnson wasn't, and still isn't, set in stone either.

Johnson started all 16 regular season games and three postseason contests in 2018, including Super Bowl LIII, posting a career-high 119 tackles, 11 pass breakups, four interceptions and one forced fumble. His 119 tackles were the second-most by a non-linebacker in the NFL that season. Rapp, meanwhile, earned a starting role after Johnson was placed on injured reserve with a season-ending shoulder injury, doing so in 10 of 15 games as a rookie.

Though Rapp's starts came at strong safety, his designation position at Washington was reportedly free safety. If he stays at strong safety, however, it's possible Johnson could also move over to free safety, since Johnson also played that position in college.

It's possible Los Angeles could still pick up Weddle's option. However, Weddle also said he did not want to return to the team as a backup.

It's unclear exactly what the future holds for Weddle, but he seems prepared for what lies ahead regardless.

Before he makes that decision, though, his first order of business will be getting healthy. According to ESPN's Lindsey Thirty, Weddle needs knee surgery and shoulder surgery for nagging injuries he endured during the season.

Seems like a no brainer, this team needs cap help and there are younger cheaper better options throughout the roster, and he doesn’t want to be a backup.

Last I read from Weddle was the Rams had the option for this year. If that's the case I can't see them picking it up.

Would have been nice to keep Steven Parker knowing what we know now. Weddle was fine up to the Cleveland game. After that he didn’t want to hit anymore. The Baltimore game showed he can’t run either. Easy decision to part ways with him.

If the Rams release Eric Weddle before June 1st of this year the Rams will see $4.25 million saving in this year's cap with only a $500 K worth of dead cap.

With the Rams having two young rising NFL stars in the NFL @ the safety posts JJ III & Taylor Rapp under contract for 2020 I would think the judicious decision of this Ram team would be to release Eric Weddle & go with Rapp @ strong safety with Jake Gervase as his back up & JJ III to deep safety with Nick Scott as his back up this season.

Rams would have 3 second season safeties & JJ III entering his 4th season as a starter. This team looks to be in good condition @ safety.(y):giggle:

I would agree that Weddle won't be back. He had a disappointing season and there is no reason to think he will bounce back at his age. His skills and health are both declining.

I honestly would have no problem cutting Matthews too. Like Weddle, he seemed to be a step slow on many plays. Cutting both would save 8 mil in cap space. They're gonna have to pony up if they want to keep Fowler or Littleton.

I honestly don't see them able to sign both. I feel like Fowler would be the key player in this defense. But he will cost more than Littleton. So I really don't know.

At this point in time I have no ideal what type of defense the Rams will implement 43 or 34. I do know that Dante Fowler is a very strong 34 D player & playing a 43 Defense @ one of the DE post does not put him in the best position to earn & shine at the cap cost his skills will demand.

Cory Littleton is totally different.....IF a 43 D was to be implemented in 2020 CL would be a fantabulous fit primarily @ the WSOLB'er post. Samson Ebukam would make an excellent SSOLB'er bookend with CL.

Flip this playscript & the Rams continue with a complete 34 Defense then DF would continue as a good fit here & an investment in long term would appear to make perfect sense for this team moving forward.

Difficulty for the Rams is that CL is the crowning ILB'er entering UFA in March. I am sure that CL's market Value is well above $ 8 million in the open market. Snead has not been asleep at the wheel on this upcoming FA market.

Snead has assembled 5 interior LB'ers who could fill the vacancy with the departed CL. Leading candidate would be Travin Howard who was drafted by Snead back in 2018. Snead traded for former starter Kenny Young who also is entering his 3rd season.

Snead has 3 MLB'ers prospects under contract & able to contend to start in 2020. They are Micah Kiser, Troy Reader & Natrez Patrick. So the interior LB'ing unit has the numbers available to not cause any major alarms when CL signs elsewhere as I expect.

Weddle know this !! That is why he said he wants out. The Rams drafted these young guys to replace him.

Rams need a safety that can ballhawk in the deep middle. Rapp is a SS who can cover a bit but he's not an elite ballhawk type for that deep role. I do think he's going to be elite mind you just not that type of safety. Weddle is not even close to that, he's a SS now who is an iffy tackler.

It's basically Johnson or bust for that role. I think he can do it at a high level, but we're gonna have to wait and see because of him missing so much time this season.

Weddle is gone. And re: that deep safety role it would not surprise me if the Rams snap one up at some point in this draft particularly if they think it's unlikely they can keep JJ.
