ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS
Outstanding size. Very good timing, touch and short accuracy. Can buy time in the pocket with his feet. Has NFL pedigree -- father played more than a decade in the league. Very strong pro-day showing, completing 87 of 88 passes and throwing well against air.
WEAKNESSES
Operated a dink-and-dunk passing game featuring a lot of high-percentage, lateral tosses and short crossers that heavily padded his completion percentage. Does not drive the ball on deep outs or possess a high-velocity arm to rip the ball through high winds. Has a low release point that leads to a lot of batted balls. Is not an elusive scrambler and eyes drop under duress.
DRAFT PROJECTION
Round 7-Priority free agent
BOTTOM LINE
A highly touted prep recruit who struggled to secure a starting job at Texas after cycling through three offenses in three years. Graduated early and transferred to SMU, where he settled down in a simplified system under the guidance of June Jones. Could fend for a job in a West Coast offense.

214. Garrett Gilbert, QB, SMU: B Grade
Jerry Jones' heart is broken because he wanted Garrett Gilbert in the seventh round. The Rams needed to take a young, developmental quarterback, and Gilbert was one of the top signal-callers available.

Not thrilled about this guy. Career backup IMHO. Isn't going to "push Bradford" as Wagner said "they wanted". And I am a "Bradford guy". But I did want to see them bring in someone who could actually PUSH him. Murray was my guy. They screwed up not jumping back into the 5th, again .... IMHO

    Garrett Gilbert, QB, SMU
    Height: 6-4. Weight: 220.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.80.
    Projected Round (2014): 6-FA.

5/5/14: After a rough start to his college career, Gilbert straightened things out as a senior playing for June Jones. He completed 67 percent of his passes for 3,528 yards with 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions. In 2012, Gilbert completed 53 percent of his passes for 2,932 yards with 15 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He could be worthy of late-round consideration.

Draft Scout Garrett Gilbert News
05/06/14
- 2014 NFL Draft Quarterbacks: Garrett Gilbert, Southern Methodist, 6-4, 221, 4.86...Was introduced the national audience when Texas star Colt McCoy was knocked out of BCS championship on the fifth play against Alabama at the end of 2010 season. After falling from grace at Texas, Gilbert -- the son of former Cal and NFL veteran Gale Gilbert -- resurfaced at SMU in 2012 to play for coach June Jones, former run-and-gun advocate who is brandishing a pistol offense these days. Gilbert has the physical ability, but rough college career dinged his confidence. - Frank Cooney, The Sports Xchange
01/30/14 - Leigh Steinberg has signed SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert as his first new football client since relaunching his agency four months ago. Gilbert's father, former NFL quarterback Gale Gilbert, was once represented by Steinberg, the super agent who fell from grace due to alcoholism and bankruptcy before rebuilding his business. SMU coach June Jones remains a Steinberg client. This is the first time Steinberg has represented the son of a former client. Garrett Gilbert says "it seems like a perfect fit for me personally as well as my family." Gilbert is currently working out in northern San Diego in preparation for SMU's pro day in Dallas on March 28. - AP Sports
11/21/13 - WEEK 12 COLLEGE FOOTBALL STARS: Garrett Gilbert, SMU, threw for 353 yards and four TDs to help the Mustangs beat Connecticut 38-21. - AP Sports
11/21/13 - WEEK 12 AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE HONOR ROLL: Garrett Gilbert, Sr., QB, SMU, Austin, Texas,...Completed 33 of 52 passes for 353 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-21 win against UConn. - American Athletic Conference football
11/16/13 - Garrett Gilbert threw four touchdown passes to help SMU hold off Connecticut 38-21 Saturday. The national leader in total offense at 409.4 yards per game before Saturday passed for 353 yards and ran for 23 against the Huskies. SMU (4-5, 3-2 American Athletic Conference) improved its chance of becoming bowl eligible. The Mustangs must win two of their final three games.
UConn (0-9, 0-5) stayed within a touchdown of SMU until 3:50 remained in the game. At that point, SMU's Chase Hover kicked a 27-yard field goal, set up by Connecticut's 14-yard punt. Three plays after that, UConn committed its first turnover. Under pressure, quarterback Casey Cochran threw an interception that SMU's Stephon Sanders returned 35 yards for a touchdown. Gilbert passed for two touchdowns each to Jeremy Johnson and Keenan Holman. Johnson finished with 12 catches for 71 yards. Holman had 8 for 88 yards, and teammate Der'rikk Thompson caught 5 for 113. - AP Sports

Obviously a Schottenheimer favorite.

I remember his dad. He was Cal's QB during the famous "the play" where the winning TD was scored when the marching band was on the field.
His dad, Gale, played his HS ball her locally. That is the only thing that excites me about this pick

Gilbert is NOT mobile at all and he needs a "dumbed down" offense ..... well I guess he fits Schotty's offense ...
