Here in So Cal a lot has been going on. Dodgers NLCS, Lakers first game with Lebron. Rams 6-0. I understand the media guys on the radio have to hype up the Lakers and Dodgers, but there is very little mention of the Rams right now on the airwaves and if there is it’s just a little blurb. Seriously-the best and only undefeated team in the NFL is a stepchild in LA. No insight-no breakdown of upcoming opponents. No NFL talk in general right now. BTW-
I thought the local guys on 710 and 570 were bad but the Dan Lebatard show on ESPN radio is awful. I listen but they never talk about sports?? Is that normal?
I’ve been listening more to sports radio since my commute is now an hour each way instead of like 5mins

L.A sports radio is terrible for sure. It is formula, overproduced crap. But I have heard more Ram talk than I have since they moved to the STL. Playoff baseball and NBA opening day are always going to be a big radio topic.

It's been that way since the first day they arrived back from St. Louis. Even after basketball finals were over and OTA's started, it was still Kobe this, Lebron that for hour after hour.

I've been listening to 710am, Rams flagship, all day and its been all Lakers talk. 20 minutes on Lebron playing ping-pong, and which one of us could beat him,:blah::blah::blah:.

They had some on the Red Sox, very little on the Dodgers. You can tell the talking head on 710am are all basketball first guys.

Wish I knew how to complain to the Rams how bad they are getting ignored.

The best Ram coverage comes from Fred Rogin on 570am at noon. He brings on Vinny B for a few minutes every day to update injuries and whatnot.

This is the trade off, I guess. In St Louis, there was no NBA to talk about. If the Cards missed the post season, there was about 5% Blues Hockey, 35% Mizzou Football, and 60% Rams talk. On a typical day, they’d break down positional groups and would call former coaches and retired nfl players to discuss the Rams..several hours a day. This was when we were 2-14 the year before..lol.

It’s never going to be that way in LA, unless the Rams buy their own station...I love LA, but Rams coveragethe way we want it, will never happen....

I've lamented before about this... it's like the Rams are cursed regarding radio coverage.

Back in STL, if the Cardinals made the playoffs (which was basically every year), that's all they talked about. It made me root for them to lose. But,at least you knew that when baseball was over, the Rams would get coverage. Unfortunately, they weren't very good.

So now, they are great! But in the same market as Labron... the Dodgers will eventually get ironed out but - I guarantee... the Rams will play second fiddle to Lebron all year long... even if the Lakers suck.

So, I'm not holding out much hope until the Rams make the playoffs. The NBA will be in mid-season, so kinda boring... baseball will be done and nobody really cares about hockey in LA.

I know it's all about money and I'm sure ESPN paid the Rams lots of it to be the flagship station (and Kroneke would sell his soul to the devil to make more money)... but I'd love it if the Rams would put their fans first and move over to a station that promised to cover the Rams at least 50% of the day.

It'll never happen... greed above all else.

But it sucks... I don't even bother tuning into 710 anymore... it's a waste of effort.

Yeah I have an hour commute both ways and I check in on sports talk every day. Its 75% Lakers NBA, 20%them talking about themselves or nonsense only the find funny or amusing and the dodgers and rams split the 5%. Now I listen to audio books or music and check on sports talk just in case its something about the rams, but unless its DeMarco Far and sometimes Sadono it's still nonsense.

I would imagine some of it is ratings-driven??

Meaning...if a show covered the Rams and others covered the Lakers...the ratings (consumers tuning in) would dictate how much of their show they dedicate to a given team/topic.

Two teams, with huge roots, history and success are going to be tough to squeeze out of the market.

That’s why many people access ROD and other websites and forms of media.

I think in part is perpetuated by the station. They hired talent that is basketball first. They analyze every detail with the lakers, but with the Rams and football in general they barely scratch the surface. Mostly they joke and fuck around during the football talk.

I wanna see what happens when the Lakers are down for an extended period of time. LeBron probably never wins another chip and he's not really LA's guy anyways. The Rams should be a much better fan experience over the next five years at least. Better to grow with McVay, Goff, Gurley, Donald, et al than to watch LeBron trying to hang onto his fading prime. After that first bad season, LA fans can lay full claim to the Rams' current success. It also helps that LA fans see the Chargers as interlopers from San Diego. That makes the Rams, by contrast, LA's "natural" team. With exciting, homegrown players and championships, the Rams could be in position to jump the Lakers, much as the Warriors have done with the 49ers in the Bay. The Dodgers are probably tougher to catch, but if the Rams win titles and the other teams don't, that's hard for fans anywhere to resist.

I listen to 710am a lot, and I disagree with the idea that they don’t adequately talk about the Rams. The Morning Show and Mason and Ireland talk about them a very fair amount. In fact, this past Monday (after the Rams beat the Broncos, and the Dodgers played games 1 and 2 of the NLCS over the weekend) the Morning show actually started the showing by talking about the Rams. And Keyshawn Johnson talks a lot about football (Rams and otherwise). They regularly have Rams players and Coach Mcvay on as well.

Now that the Dodgers are deep into a playoff run and Lebron’s Laker days have officially started, they naturally need to split their time between all the amazing sports topics going on in LA. But the Rams coverage is more than adequate at the moment. I’d imagine once the Dodgers finish their season and the Rams get closer to the playoffs, we’ll see even more talk about them.

Can’t speak much for the Sedano show in the afternoon, but he’s definitely tilted more towards basketball.

It was this way before they left.
LA is and has always been a baseball town and a Lakers town.
The Rams may one day....if they can manage extended success....be the most popular football team in LA. That would take some time and success.
Surpassing the Lakers and Dodgers? Hard to imagine.
I haven't heard so cal sports radio in a long time but it sucked when I was there.
The hosts, for the most part, are not that knowledgeable and don't seem to be interested in being knowledge.
I don't know if it's the hosts or the program directors but the formula was mention a story about a big name star or two and repeat that all Fing day. The less sports related and more scandalous the story the better. Finding any reporting of actual Xs and Os was like finding a unicorn.

The only real answer seems is for Stan Kroenke to buy two stations, one FM and one AM, and to change the mix of what’s covered. Both would be regular stations, but the percentage of Rams coverage, especially during the season should be 60%. Split the other percentages around, depending on playoffs in other sports. Dodgers would be covered right now due to their playoffs. Same for the Lakers, if and when they are good again. LA is big enough to specialize, and this specialty would be towards NFL football and the Rams.

Bottom line is the bottom line. Radio stations are in the business of making money and sports talk radio is simply not a big money maker in LA. I've seen several STR stations come and go. Most recently, CBS launched a nationwide sports talk radio network and quickly exited the LA market. During the relocation saga, Fred Roggin was on a local STR station that has since changed formats. Shoot, Jim Rome isn't on in LA any more.

Sure, people are going to say if only radio program directors knew what they were doing. . . .

Yeah, but, check the ratings (link). KLAC and KSPN, carrying the two most popular franchises in LA, have combined ratings that are less than a country music station . . . in LA. Yee haw!

STR stations have market and demographic studies. If tons of Rams talk projected to make money, a radio station would do it.

It’s just the timing. It sucks there’s so little air time for the Rams right now but I get it. The Lakers will always be the top dog in LA and it’s LBJ’s first game. We’ve also been waiting 30 years for the Dodgers to win it all again and it’s been a tense series. There’s just been a buzz around the city this week. Even our RB is getting into it...

Well my timing must be off. I commute after mason and Ireland and in the morning it is national shows

I guess the guys they have on 710 are really basketball guys like Ireland and Sedano. Mason is more of a casual fan of every sport. Keyshawn is a football guy but more of a USC specialist and kind of a Rams hater which I enjoy because he takes the homer glasses off. Think I’m gonna reorder Sirius radio and listen to the NFL radio network for more in depth info around the league

If you’re listening in the morning from 10am-12pm, it’s Stephen A Smith. He definitely doesn’t talk much about the Rams. But the local morning show (Keyshawn LZ and Travis) from 6am -10am talk about them a lot. Travis does the Rams pre, halftime, and postgame shows. So naturally he talks about the Rams a lot on their show.

Not a big fan of Sedano as far as football. After week 1, he made the argument that based on one game he’d rather have Sam Darnold (after they beat the Lions) than Jared Goff going forward. It was a ridiculous segment.

Seriously, this has been the coverage so far on ESPN LA.
1. Dodgers in the WS: understandable wanting to explore reasons for the 0-2 start in the WS.
2. The Lebron(ers).....Don't need to say more, do I?
3. Carr's Raider Tears...ok, this one pissed me off. WHY are they talking about this sorry @ssed team instead of the 7-0 team for whom they CLAIM to be the home station?
4. Back to the Dodgers.

FREAK ME DRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:wtf:
