Hopkins had 3 good years out of 7. He's been good not great in AZ scoring 6 TDs in each of his 2 years in AZ. Hopkins doesn't fit as an elite WR. IMO he's good not elite and is basically overrated most of his career. He has no business on that list.

Keenan Allen has been underrated his whole career. Trying to cover Keenan is like trying to cover Kupp. The problem with Allen is injuries and poor OCs.

It’s somewhat fashionable to overlook Kupp because he’s hard to explain. He’s not the fastest or quickest, he’s not overly big or strong, he’s not a jump ball guy. He’s a little bit of all of that along with being very technical, very smart and a very good route runner with a coach who knows how to maximize all those traits.
Leave him off your lists if you want, single cover him if you want and he’ll lead the league in yds and tds again.

10 guys had 100 or more receptions in 2021.
Kupp had 22 more than #2
Kupp had the most yards.
And of the top 10 receivers in receptions, Kupp was #2 in yards per catch (13.4). In fact of the top 18 in receptions (83+) Kupp was #2 in ypc. So he didn't dink and dunk his way to those numbers.
Plus he had 16 TD receptions.

There is no way he shouldn't be on a top 5 or 3 or 1 list.

just dumb

train
It should be dumb in this day and age, but it isn't, it's spot on.

Human biases are devastatingly powerful and because they're usually unconscious, we're completely unaware of them.

Anybody who knows anything about psychology realises that you simply cannot remove embedded beliefs that have been established over hundreds of years, even if we (hopefully) all wish we could.

There are literally zero reasons to leave Kupp off that list other than an unconscious bias.

Good description @Flint.

I think being left off this list has more to do with his physical attributes than his race. He is not the absolute best at anything that can be measured other than his production last season.

A list like this is purely subjective and depends on what criteria you use to determine a top 5 WR.

Used to be Kupp could be taken out of a game but he has made himself into an unstoppable force. He would be my #1 for sure.

Racially prejudiced Black Guys of course leave Kupp off their lists. Normal thinking, fair-minded Black guys have Kupp no worse than 2.

The very fact that Cooper had broken so many Jerry Rice records at the collegiate level is what led to me 'baptizing' him as the 'White Jerry Rice' prior to his draft day - as politically incorrect as that phrase is.

Jones came in at #479 on my list of talent evaluators, right after “average drunk guy at local sports bar.”

Some “analysts (I.e. personalities)” are treating Kupp’s 2021 season as an anomaly. Therefore, they feel Kupp hasnt earned a top 5 status. When Kupp has a top 5 WR 2022 season there will be no reason to leave him off a top 5 WR list. I prefer Kupp going into the 2022 season having to prove he wasn’t an anomaly (vs everyone crowning him as one of the best 2 WRs in the league). But the secret is out he’s top 2 at worst.

Jones has a history of making statements about race and defending players with criminal activity.

I think he knows exactly what he’s doing. It’s a farce and intentional. I agree with @jjab360 , he wants to create a talking point. Even when he’s wrong.

Do we know when this list was made? If it was after the season I have 0 respect for Jones.
Just a couple days ago. In fact this is his second list of top WRs he's made since the season ended. The first one was the week after the Super Bowl, and he left Kupp off that one too. This is the same list he made in February, the only change is he took Deebo Samuel off and put Stefon Diggs on.

If this was a list of top 5 WRs over the past five seasons, it would be solid. But it's supposed to be a list of who the top WRs in the NFL are, right now. Jones weighs what a player did prior to 2021 really heavily.

^ Stubbornness is a really annoying trait, to me. Route running, hands, run after the catch, run blocking, football intelligence, Kupp is elite in all those categories. He didn't come out of nowhere and he's not going anywhere. He's going to get Pro Bowl recognition every year that Stafford is his QB.
