Depends on the restructure.

The Rams could wait until a bit into the season and then move a bunch of money into this year, making MORE room for next year.

Yeah, monies can be moved forward, but when those monies would be available would be different, so...

Anyway, I think this next FA season is gonna have a fair bit of us looking at the FA OL market... as much as they like the guys we have... and I think Alaric Jackson and Tremayne Anchrum are likely to be part of our future as will Havenstein.

But yeah, if a major LT pops, you can bet that McSnead is gonna give that a massive look... and they'll be able to next year.

Wait until mid-season to open negotiations with Stafford's agent for his extension, perhaps we reach a settlement a few games prior to the play-offs, the Rams can then concentrate on re-signing some of the other players heading towards free agency following the 2021 season. jmo.

Stafford said he would play it out with his current contract. We have 3 years of favorable contract cap hit at QB. So just in the off chance he suffers a career threatening injury or plays like shit you don't want to load him up with a big signing bonus right now. Let him at least play his first season in horns.

Not a big deal or anything and I am convinced he will show well year one but holy christ this team needs to slow the fuck down on the early signings. They just get burned and burned doing that shit.
Yeah? But how much more of paying Gurley 20$million a year?

I believe in Stafford but I tend to agree, I just don't see the harm in waiting tbh.

However even though we have been burned by bad contracts recently it really hasn't held us back from what we wanted to do personnel wise, Demoff has proven a wizard in that field

Well we are gonna need a LT. And maybe they are hoping one of Armstead, Brown, or Fisher hit the FA market and they want to be ready.
I could see Staff wanting to help pay for one!

I believe Whitworth will retire after this season. I don't think next years starting OT is currently on the roster. I would have said, he retires after the Rams win the Superbowl but I don't want to jinx them!

Restructure what?
He only has 1 year left on his deal after this season.
And next year only costs 12,5 mill.
The only option is an extension.

I don’t think there should be an “off-season” to trying to better position the team. Whether it is sifting the FAs or looking for trades and that requires having room and $$$ to get things done.

Stafford and a new contract have got to be the top priority snd I don’t think you work something that important from a position of fear based on other players.

Getting that contract done sooner means they can turn their attention elsewhere with the most important position on the team locked up. It’s just smart.

Unless the Rams and their people have already had discussions with Stafford and his reps and they all agree on certain parameters. That could allow them to move forward with other negotiations that might be more challenging.

Well his cap number next yr is $23M. $12.5M salary, w/ a $10M roster bonus and $0.5M workout bonus.

So you could extend him and drop his cap number this yr and maybe next yr. In any event, any cap savings this yr can be carried into next yr.

For example you could tear up this deal and hand him a new 4 yr deal since there is no prorated bonus cap charge involved from the Rams perspective.

Let's say, considering his age and he gives you a competitive discount, he accepts $115M for 4 yrs. A little less than 30 mil avg per yr.

Give him a $40M signing bonus. Then his base salaries for each yr could be....

$5M salary in 21'
$10M salary in 22'
$25M in 23'
$35M in 24'

So that gives you cap numbers of

15M in 21' currently 20M
20M in 22' currently 23M
35M in 23'
45M in 24'

Saves you a combined $8M the next 2 yrs in cap room. This yr's can be carried over for next yr and might be enough to get you a LT or retain some guys you may want to keep.

Plus the cap should go up considerably in 23', 24' when his number gets big and or you can move on in 24' and take only a $10M cap hit (his prorated bonus)

His salary and bonus in 2022 isnt guaranteed though, so there's no way to restructure. If they converted his 2021 roster bonus , they'd save 5 mill on the cap this year and push his cap number next year to near 28 mill. Makes no sense. He can only sign an extension or a new deal.
I think the danger here is in thinking Stafford is all gung ho about finishing his career with the Rams. He may very well be however it's also quite possible he thinks he'll have a monster year in this offense this year and then look for 1 last big contract

He can't just tear it up and create a new deal? That's what I am saying.

Not at all the picture that’s been painted of his motivation to be traded.
I feel pretty good about him taking less than market value.
