As if it wasn’t bad enough losing three-time defensive player of the year J.J. Watt, the Texans lost another key member of their defense last night.

According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, Texans outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus suffered a torn pectoral muscle Sunday night and is out for the season.

Mercilus was injured on the first series of the game, not long before Watt left with a tibial plateau fracture. Mercilus will need surgery to repair the damage, which will end his season.

He was replaced in the lineup Sunday night by Brennan Scarlett, but it will be hard to replace his production. He led the Texans with 7.5 sacks last season and had 12.0 in 2015.

Lions lose Haloti Ngata for season with torn bicep

The Lions’ defensive line has just suffered a big loss.

Haloti Ngata, the big defensive tackle who was off to a good start this season, suffered a torn bicep on Sunday and will be placed on injured reserve. Although he would be eligible to return in eight weeks, the Detroit Free Press reports that the team’s medical staff has already ruled him out for the rest of the season.

After a bad year in 2016, the Lions’ defense has rebounded this season, both against the run and against the pass. But with Ngata out for the season, they’ll have to scramble to replace an important cog.

The Lions have added to their defensive line this week by signing defensive end Datone Jones and defensive tackle Caraun Reid.

Aaron Rodgers - IR
Golden Taint - out 1-4 weeks
Winston - may play hurt (shoulder)
Patrick Peterson (quad) should play vs Rams
And many more this weekend - it's bad around the league this year.

It looks like Dunbar is finally healthy, though I don't see where he fits...

Rams TE Derek Carrier cleared the concussion protocol. Everybody else came out of Sunday's game fine. RB Lance Dunbar is also healthy and eligible to come off PUP, but the team can also delay that process by a week or two in order to preserve depth. Rams continue to be very fortunate on the injury front. The only real question is DB Lamarcus Joyner, who has missed the past three games with a bad hamstring.

At the 6 week mark? It sure feels worse.
Last year we had Romo and Cutler out at QB. Not the star power of Rodgers but two starters. We had Peterson out as big a name as Johnson. We had Gronk and Jeffery out so two big receiver names. Watt was also out last year. This year we have Decker out he equals out Yanda plus we had Lane Johnson out oline probably equals out. It always seems worse but it's usually pretty even.

Justin Davis hasnt been active for weeks. Probably a good place to start looking...

I totally forgot about Dunbar lol. I honestly thought he had been cut at some point or put on permanent IR. But that's very interesting, he could be a killer weapon for McVay and as dieter said he would certainly be an improvement over Davis who could immediately go to the practice squad upon cutting if they wanted to keep him.

I'm guessing they wait until after this game to activate so they have a bye week to evaluate. But that's good news I wasn't even thinking about.

Yeah, I forgot about Davis too. Part of what I was wondering is his role. Does he get all/part of Tavon and Brown's snaps or does Gurley get less touches? I think the more touches Gurley gets the better, but I guess long term it's not good. It'll probably differ week to week. I don't know much about Dunbar, is he an upgrade over Brown and/or Austin?

IMO, he’s a lesser Chris Thompson. So he does add another wrinkle to the offense.

The Seahawks will place defensive end Cliff Avril on injured reserve as he contemplates his future, coach Pete Carroll said, via SiriusXM NFL Radio.

“Cliff Avril will go on IR,” Carroll said. “He’s seeing a bunch of doctors, seriously looking at a big decision.”

Avril injured his neck/spine during an Oct. 1 game against the Colts when quarterback Jacoby Brisset taccidentally stuck his heel in Avril’s chin. Avril has remained out since, while seeing specialists to determine his future.

Avril, who is in his 10th season, has 74 career sacks and a Super Bowl ring.

Packers hoping for Aaron Rodgers’ return Dec. 17

The Packers are hoping quarterback Aaron Rodgerscan return for their Dec. 17 game against Carolina, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

Demovsky says it “might be a long shot, but they’re hoping.”

Rodgers had surgery Thursday to repair his right collarbone. The team placed him on injured reserveFriday, making him ineligible to play for eight weeks.

The Week 15 game against the Panthers would mark the earliest Rodgers could return.

Of course, the Packers will have to remain in the playoff hunt with Brett Hundley for a Rodgers’ return even to become a possibility.
