It may be as simple that a heavy passing offense with a mobile QB plays to OLB/ER Samson Ebukam strengths:whistle:

If you review the game the week before KC where the Rams played the Seahawks who just happen to run a heady duty outstanding run game & a running QB played into Ebukam weaknesses. Ebukam had a very bad game against them.

Not sure if Wade might consider running out John Franklin Myers out to play OLB'er on highly probable run downs would be the answer to this issue but JFM's would be a larger bigger & stronger tackler on the field.

Guy scores 2 defensive touchdowns when the RT was blocking him and all people can say is he did great with a TE blocking him? Give the man some credit he had a good game.

Littleton is fantastic as expected, but Barron--one of my fav Rams--has clearly lost a step. I keep thinking about how good Hager looked earlier this year.
Barron said he wasn't at full speed when they put him on the active roster and before that apparently hadn't been able to work out at full speed for months. I'm still hoping he might round into shape for the playoffs. When he's healthy he's a force.

I think the problem is he's never healthy.

can't see him on our roster next season! Seems like an easy lock for replacement/ upgrade. The grind is catching up to him sadly.

He doesn't have a lbers body. He moved there to help out in Williams d. Not that he can complain as the move made him alot of money. So even if he does get cut he can be happy with the move he made to lber.

The last time Mark Barron was a "force" was when he was playin weakside for Greg Williams. His first year, when Greg told him "See ball and go get ball." Second year, when they started putting thought into his play, it immediately suffered.

This is why he failed at safety btw. He requires a simplistic scheme where he can chase. That is his strength. Dude is never going to hold up in this defense and even when he's healthy he's hit/miss because taking on blocks isn't his strong suit.

Versatile Rams linebacker Mark Barron is thriving in Wade Phillips' 3-4 scheme

Wade Phillips’ impending arrival as the Rams’ defensive coordinator last January caused several players minor anxiety.

They were excited, of course, about Phillips’ track record of success, but uncertain how they might fit into his 3-4 scheme.

Mark Barron, at a seemingly undersized 6 feet 2 and 225 pounds for an inside linebacker, was not among the nervous.

“I wasn’t worried about it all,” Barron said. “Just tell me what you need me to do, what’s my responsibility, and I’m going to go and try to find a way to make plays within that scheme.”

Barron, 28, has done that for a Rams team that is 7-2 and atop the NFC West heading into Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

He has 63 tackles and three interceptions, both team bests.

“You feel him,” coach Sean McVay said. “He’s all over the field.”

Barron’s playmaking has helped the Rams lead the league with 19 forced turnovers, including 12 interceptions and seven fumbles.

In last week’s victory over the Houston Texans, Jared Goff’s long touchdown pass to Robert Woods was the third-quarter play that blew open the game and sent the Rams on their way to a 33-7 blowout.

But Barron’s interception late in the first half positioned the Rams for the breakout.

After the Rams failed to generate a first down with a fake punt, the Texans took over and moved inside the Rams’ 20-yard line with a chance to build on a 7-6 lead.

Barron intercepted a pass to quell the threat and returned it 15 yards to set up a drive that led to a field goal to put the Rams ahead going into the break.

And he did it wearing a cast on his left hand because of a thumb injury.

“If I’m going to step on the field and play with it, I can’t be out there making excuses,” Barron said. “You got to find a way.”

Barron has thrived for the Rams since moving from safety to a hybrid role a few seasons ago. It was one of several position switches he made since he began playing football in youth leagues.

Barron mainly played running back, wingback and receiver in high school in Mobile, Ala. But during his senior season, to help the defense, he also moved to linebacker and safety.

In college at Alabama, he played safety for two national championship teams and was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the seventh pick in the 2012 draft.

The Rams acquired Barron for two draft picks in a 2014 trade deadline move, and he finished that season at safety.

But in 2015, after outside linebacker Alec Ogletree suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 4, former Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams utilized Barron in a hybrid role.

“They just threw me in,” Barron said, adding, “It wasn’t a planned thing or a sit-down-and-talk thing. It was just a way to get me on the field — and I ended up being good at it.”

So good, the Rams signed Barron to a five-year, $45-million contract before last season.

He responded by finishing with the second-most tackles and two interceptions for a defense that was forced to carry the load for a team that featured the league’s worst offense.

Phillips surveyed the talent he was inheriting and saw Barron as a perfect fit for the “Mo” linebacker position, which does not require the stoutness of the other inside linebacker spot played by Ogletree.

“The better the guy can cover,” Phillips said, “the more you can utilize him.”

Teammates have not been surprised by the latest demonstration of Barron’s versatility.

He is “one of those old-school-type players” that can be lined up anywhere and produce, safety Lamarcus Joyner said.

“I don’t think too many people love the game like Mark Barron,” Joyner said. “Some guys play with passion. Some guys play because they have the ability to play.

“Mark Barron, he’s two in one.”

Said Ogletree: “There’s not a lot of people that can kind of transfer a position because they might struggle, whether it’s technique or not having the ability to do it. But a guy like him, he’s definitely able to adjust really quickly and then football instincts take over.”

McVay and team trainers have been cautious with Barron since the offseason, limiting his participation in workouts and during training camp — and holding him out of preseason games — so that he would be physically ready for the season.

The Rams are the first winning NFL team for which Barron has played, so he is enjoying the feeling.

“It feels different,” he said, “and better.”

The Rams are on pace to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2004, and have been mentioned in the national conversation about Super Bowl contenders.

But Barron said his mind-set would not vary if the Rams were 2-7 rather than 7-2.

“I just don’t approach anything thinking I’m going to lose,” he said, “So as far as I’m concerned, we’re going to the Super Bowl.”

I really think it’s time to start Kiser in the middle. This run D needs help and his coverage skills improved throughout pre season.

I rewatched the game last night and Ebukam easily could have had two more sacks... he was in Mahomes way a lot.

What I didn’t notice is... who was he beating? I didn’t note that and kick myself.

The good news is that if the light really has come on with Ebukam, then we can start playing more of Wade's actual hybrid 3-4 especially with Talib coming back.

I can't tell you how many times Denver would rush 5 as both OLBs would come on the rush because they liked the shorter cover times in man and both Von Miller and Demarcus Ware were beasts.

Well, Fowler is no Von Miller and Ebukam is no Demarcus Ware (yet?), but they both are pretty good pass rushers with the benefit of playing with the best DL of all time (yes, better than John Randle, better than Merlin Olsen, better than Reggie White when he moved inside as he got older)

I'd LOVE for this D to rush 5 against NO when they try to max protect.

I have a feeling Kiser and Littleton will make for a solid ILB duo when the time comes. They're both very different players who can cover for each other's weaknesses

Ebukam has the tools, he just needs to be more consistent. He stops moving his feet when OL can get their hands on him. That and better hand technique can help him take that next step in development IMO.

Barron missed two complete seasons (back to back) 2017/2018 OTA's 2017/2018 Training Camps & 2017/2018 Pre seasons. That was after he signed a 5 year, $45 million contract $5 million signing bonus, $20 million guaranteed. Rams are under contract to pay Barron close to 20 million more for the next 2 seasons. Not going to happeno_O.

MB has two surgeries this off season to deal with two cronic problems A Shoulder & his manufacturing of bone spurs in close to his lower Achilles Tendon. The 2018 version of Mark Barron is very slow to react forward, laterally & in reverse. He has used up most all of his great fundamentals in tackling which has suffered greatly from total lack of any training or practice availability for over two years. The 30 yr old ex safety now inside LB'er for this team is nearing an end.

It's not like Wade does not see it because that's why we once again we are seeing a heavy use of Marqui Christian taking snaps from the unhealthy wore down LB'er Mark Barron. His production is down to the point where a Rams DT is neck & neck with him. I suspect we may even see Ramik Wilson return to the lineup before this season is over. RW is a proven tackler in run support but not as good in coverage. Might even see Littleton slide over into Barron post & rookie Micah Kiser get some early run support work done.

Seems to me that the "inner man player" of Eubukam came out in this game. I would say it comes from seeing guys like AD and Suh who give it their all every play. If you're a player, you can't watch guys play like that and it not rub off on you.

I was glad to see it. That play when he hit Mahomes' arm put me in mind of AD. Eub was a man possessed on that play!

The writing on the wall is Barron's contract. He will go from damn near 10M dead cap hit if they had cut him this season to 2M. They undoubtedly figured "why not try to get him right" when they elected to keep him around since they didn't have any home run replacement options. And obviously Ogletree had more value in trade so it was sayonara.

Mark is a 4-3 WILL backer. The only time he's ever really sustained good performance is when he chased from the weakside in a 4-3 that one season, which also happened to be a contract year. But also of note is that Williams had been quoted on saying they allowed Mark to freelance that season too, since he didn't have a full grasp of the defense. Then made one of their dumbest decisions on paying him. Because the very next year his play declined as they started requiring him to play the call/scheme.

But anyway I do think Wilson (who is a marginal starter as well) would give us more consistency. I mean it's slim pickins right now. I do very much like Christian btw, but obviously we need roster help at ILB. Unless somehow Kiser develops a great deal in coverage down the stretch here in limited practice snaps.

In Agreement. Bottom line that was a gamble made by Rams Org. that did NOT produce close as expected. Wade is smart enough to insert some packages to attempt to beef up the run D if he feels the heat. Friendly reminder here Rams went un-defeated with ILB'er Ramik Wilson/ Marqui Christian combo before Barron was RE-Started. Ramik Wilson started the first four games. The Rams D was only giving up 16 pts with Ramik starting along with Talib, who started 3 with Ramik Wilson. Barron has zero sacks zero INT's zero fumbles recovered or caused:banghead: The Rams defense averages 30 pts a game with :eek:Mark Barron starting:sick:.

Bryce Hager & Rookie Micah Kiser are the back ups to our leading {tackler 91 tacks}MLB'er {& best perfroming Ram in the back 8}... Cory Littleton  not Barron. Barron's back ups are Christian & Wilson. I would not expect to see Wade move CL away from his MLB'er post this season. But he sure could provide some rest to CL with an insertion of veteran Hager on probable run downs to keep CL fresh for the post season finals. Hager can call this defense if needed.

In 2019 I would expect to see CL take over the weak side interior LB'ing post when Barron is release in March. I would not be surprised if Hager or Wilson is resigned. But I fully expect that Kiser will be expected to be our starting MLB when the season begins. In additon CL would be backed up by 6-0 220 ILB'er Travin Howard with his 4.50 in the 40 speed.
