Fisher said the Rams are strong at DE, and since there was no pressing need, Michael Sam wasn't really on their radar. But when it gets to the 7th round teams look for guys who are rated a lot higher than the 7th round regardless of position.

So what did Fisher do?

To paraphrase the late Bobby Kennedy....

All Jeff Fisher was doing was being "a good and decent man, who saw a wrong and tried to right it."

Saw suffering and tried to heal it and saw war and tried to stop it!

If drafting Sam was anything other than picking the BPA, it is not a risky move. It has way more ups than downs. The chance of most 7th round picks are slim to none of making the 53 anyway and especially in Sam's case being a DE coming to the Rams. You gain favor with many "underdogs" of the world, and the NFL front office. Merchandise sales have a pre-season spike path of a rocket. Media attention will be non-stop for most of the season. New fans will outnumber the discontent ones exiting. The Practice Squad is your safety valve. And your only real down is Sam doesn't pan out and you place him on the practice squad. You are really only out your bottom PS player if he was better or more of a need than Sam. It's a keenly calculated risk which only negative is that it energizes a small opposition group of individuals that have no tolerance for anything different and are not well schooled in making a lot of noise. They will vanish if Sam is not on the active roster and you will stand a hero to the majority of society.

After seeing the press conference I'm pulling like crazy for Michael Sam.This is a good thing for the Rams. This could be the thing that really pulls this team together and gives them that edge that can't be drafted or coached.

M Sam is a great effort player... Think Rudy, Unbreakable, Piccolo. I'm hetero so I really don't care except I want another Super Bowl and believe he can help better than Sims.

Why does everything have to be part of some conspiracy? Could it be possible that Sam was the best player on the Rams board at that point in the draft? I dont see Fisher drafting Sam just for the publicity only to cut him and get all the negative press that would come with that, IMO Fisher and Snead believe Sam has a chance to make the team and fulfill a role as a back up pass rusher. Remember all the positive press coverage now would be for nothing if Sam ends up getting cut and then the bad publicity would follow.
I agree 100%. I am not buying into the conspiracy theories. For all the good publicity you get all the bad if he is cut like you said. All one has to do is look at the whole Tebow fanatics thing. If anything I think Fisher showed guts on this. It's not like you put much stock in the 7th round guy making your team. You hope for the best and roll the dice but the odds are not good. They were going to bring in a couple of UDFA's who were DE or pass rush specialists and see what they have to offer because you never know.

I know on some other team boards the hater posters are just crazy on this. Why cant people just see the football potential aspect on this. I think though that even if Sam gets cut he will be a class act and will say that the rams and coaching staff gave him a fair shot and he was thankful for the opportunity.

This is not all a bed of roses for Fisher. The extra press comes with a lot of distractions. There will be non-football sleazy media types crawling all over the Rams business looking for a salacious story. And that's a lot more extra work for Fisher and company. Demoff said yesterday that the Rams have received much feedback on the Sam selection, both good and bad.

Well, as I said, I expected "the non-football sleazy media types" but I didn't expect them so soon. The kid didn't even set foot on the practice field yet. All I have to say to Michael Sam at this point is "Really, man, I thought you were better than that."

Just spit ballin here but if "trysts" evolve in a locker room, that's a paradigm that would be amazingly tough to deal with

That never happens at work with straight people :sneaky:

I know .......blue font ............... but it really never happens in all straight locker rooms. Tell me it's a problem a coach is experienced in and can handle without distraction, hell there're times I've had wrestlers get into fights in practice and I've told them we didn't have time for a lovers spat, that might be an option no longer available as are a host of other euphemisms.

BTW could ya tell me how many other work places have men and women showering together?

Seems like you're trying to make some sort of case here bro, I'm just spit ballin cuz it's not a simple as some might like it played, Kroenke and the rest took a hell of a step here that no one else was gonna ,that's clear,I'd rather it not redound negatively upon the team, and BTW how many of the Rams draftees are gonna have an Oprah Winfrey Show about their sex life?
