Game Preview: Rams Return to Coliseum to Host Eagles on Sunday Night Football

The Rams have not lost back-to-back in the regular season under head coach Sean McVay and will look to continue the trend of nearly two years against the defending world champion Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday in Los Angeles.

The Eagles (6-7) come to L.A. for Sunday Night Football a week after the Rams (11-2) were dominated by the Bears defense in NBC’s primetime slate. On Thursday, defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who went without a sack for the first time since Week 9 against the Bears, says his guys are ready to get back out there.

“[W]e just got to find a way to bounce back, and this is the week that we want to do that,” Donald said. “Everybody’s anxious, everybody’s itching, everybody’s flying around today at practice so I know everybody’s ready.”

The Eagles beat the Rams in the L.A. Coliseum Week 13 of last season in a game that was tight throughout. Philadelphia won 43-35 behind quarterback Carson Wentz, who threw for 291 yards with four touchdowns and one interception in the contest.

“It was just two good football teams playing and the better team won — they won,” running back Todd Gurley said this week reflecting on the loss.

The game proved to be the last game of Wentz’s second season. The quarterback tore the ACL in his left knee and was forced to leave the game early — which was closed out by league veteran and now-Super Bowl Champion and MVP quarterback Nick Foles.

What was expected to be one of the top matchups in the NFC this season, is shaping up to be another unexpected game at the quarterback position for the Eagles. It was reported midweek that Wentz is expected to miss Sunday’s game with a fractured vertebrae in his back. With nothing official coming out of the Eagles facility until late in the week — Wentz will be officially listed as questionable — the Rams have been prepping for either quarterback come Sunday.

“It doesn’t really alter it much cause both of them are good quarterbacks,” second-year outside linebacker Samson Ebukam said. “I mean, they’re both top passers, just one of them is bigger than the other. We all know what Nick Foles can do, he went to the Super Bowl and won it.”

The defending champs are 5-6 with Wentz at the helm in 2018 after starting the season 1-1 led by the one-time Ram, Foles. The quarterback news broke with Wentz completing 69.6 percent of his passes and coming off a three-touchdown, zero-interception performance against the Cowboys in Week 14.

Head coach Doug Pederson has dealt with a multitude of injuries coming off his club’s first Super Bowl Championship. Several Eagles have missed time to injury, including a number of starters. Running backs Jay Ajayi and Corey Clement, as well as safety Rodney McLeod and cornerback Jalen Mills join nine other Eagles on the injured reserve.

Additionally, the Eagles have gone three weeks without linebacker Jordan Hicks, who has 5.0 sacks this season, due to a calf injury, and defensive end Michael Bennett is yet to practice this week, as he boasts 8.0 sacks this season and deals with a foot injury.

Among the healthy Eagles are offensive weapons, tight end Zach Ertz and wide receiver Alshon Jeffery. The Eagles offense is No. 12 in passing yards per game in 2018, and are led by Ertz, who has the most receptions among all tight ends with 98 and has accumulated 1,016 yards receiving in his sixth professional season. Jeffery scored his fifth touchdown of the season last week in Dallas.

“We've come along some in a lot of areas,” defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said in preparation for the defending champs. “Hopefully, the arrows pointing up as far as our defense is concerned because we need to play more consistent.”

Phillips’ comments come as the Rams defense appears to be trending upwards in terms of defending the pass and generating takeaways. Los Angeles has 10 takeaways since Week 11 against Kansas City, compared to its 15 takeaways leading up to that Monday night game.

While Ebukam said his defense has been taking a “see ball, get ball” approach as of late, cornerback Marcus Peters, who had an interception against the Bears, cited his veteran defensive back teammate as to why the defense as stepped it up.

“I think Aqib [Talib] said it best earlier — he was speaking about me, period — ‘It’s no a sprint it’s a marathon,’ you feel me?” Peters turned the questions to the reporters. “It’s going to take a bit of time to put all of these pieces and make everything fit right together. You’re not just building Legos, you feel me?”

If there’s anything left for the unit to fit together in the final three games of the regular season, it is probably an improved run defense. A few days from rookie running back Josh Adams, who Pederson has looked to as a starter since Week 11 and is averaging five yards a carry, the Rams allow 124.2 yards rushing per game — which dwells among the league’s bottom third. The Rams allowed its second-highest rushing total of the season against the Bears, letting up 194 yards on the ground.

Chicago’s rushing total trailed the Rams’ total yards on offense (214) by just two sets of chains. Gurley took 11 carries for just 28 yards, while quarterback Jared Goff went 20-for-44 with 180 yards, zero touchdowns, and four interceptions.

Gurley, Goff, and the Los Angeles offense have the chance to get back on track against the banged-up Eagles defense and its own interior pass rusher, defensive tackle Fletcher Cox. Cox has played a big part in allowing just 106.6 rushing yards per game this season, to go along with his 6.5 sacks and 27 quarterback hits. The Rams only two losses of the season have come against the league’s top two run defenses — the Saints and Bears.

Goff must worry about the Philly secondary and veteran safety Malcolm Jenkins coming off his career-high four pick performance in Chicago. On Wednesday, Goff said things could be a lot worse for his division championship team at 11-2.

“It would take me a long time to get into a lot of the details, but there's a lot of things that we could be better at, that we will be better at and are looking forward to improving on,” Goff said. “Looking forward to getting into a rhythm these last three weeks heading into the playoffs."

Goff’s Rams are headed to the playoffs and still have very much to play for against the Eagles, Cardinals, and Niners. With a win on Sunday and a Bears loss to the Packers in Chicago, the Rams will clinch a first-round bye come playoff time.

Finally, the Rams are back at home in the L.A. Coliseum for Sunday Night Football. After going 3-4 at their own place in 2017, the Rams are undefeated this season playing in the 95-year-old stadium just off the 110 freeway.

"I think the crowds have been outstanding, McVay said on Thursday. “I know our guys feel good about playing in that atmosphere, that environment, so that's certainly been a positive.”

Kickoff at the Coliseum is set for 5:20 p.m PST. Here’s how you can tune in.

Eagles vs. Rams: 4 key matchups to watch
By: Cameron DaSilva

The Los Angeles Rams are looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 14, taking on the defending Super Bowl champions and their title game MVP. The Eagles will be starting Nick Foles with Carson Wentz expected to be out, making this a favorable game that the Rams should win.

The Eagles do have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball, though, and players that Los Angeles has to be wary of. Here are four of the biggest matchups in this game, which could go a long way toward deciding the outcome.

Rob Havenstein vs. Michael Bennett
The Eagles are strong across the board on the defensive line, from Brandon Graham to Fletcher Cox. Bennett, however, is having an outstanding season himself, recording eight sacks to lead the team. Havenstein has been great at right tackle for the Rams after signing a big extension, but the offensive line as a whole has struggled in recent weeks.

Their lapses in pass protection have really impacted Jared Goff in a negative way, leading to errant passes, poor decisions in the pocket and costly fumbles. Bennett is still a dynamic pass rusher and has a knack for knocking the football out, forcing two fumbles this season.

Brandin Cooks vs. Rasul Douglas
There are favorable matchups all over the field for the Rams offense, but Cooks should really thrive against Douglas on the left side of the field. Douglas doesn’t have the speed to match Cooks downfield and, which should lead to deep shots against a secondary that’s given up plenty of big plays lately. This is the perfect opportunity to get Goff back on track after two shaky weeks against the Lions and Bears.

Cooks’ route running is difficult to match for average cornerbacks, especially combined with the threat that his speed presents. Douglas is playing like Philadelphia’s best corner right now, but as long as Goff is sharp in this one, Cooks should have a big day.

Ndamukong Suh vs. Jason Kelce
Normally Aaron Donald would be listed as one of the key matchups, but we’re going with Suh this week. He faces a tough test in Kelce, who’s one of the best centers in the league, if not the very best. Suh doesn’t always line up at nose tackle – Wade Phillips moves him all over – but generating pressure from the interior against Kelce will be crucial and go a long way toward giving Donald one-on-one matchups.

If Suh gets pushed off the ball easily and loses this matchup, the Eagles could actually have some success on the ground, which is one of the few ways they can win this game. Playing keep-away with a strong rushing attack and solid defense is ideally what the Eagles want to do. Suh has to help stop the run so that doesn’t happen.

John Johnson vs. Zach Ertz
The Cowboys shut down Ertz last week by matching him up with Byron Jones, but now it’ll be Johnson’s turn. He doesn’t have the man-to-man coverage skills that Jones does, but Johnson has played well against tight ends this season. Ertz will undoubtedly be one of Nick Foles’ favorite targets as he was targeted 23 times in the two games Foles started, so Johnson has to be prepared for a lot of passes coming his direction.

The Rams’ cornerbacks match up well with the Eagles’ wideouts, but limiting Ertz’s production has to be high on the priority list. Though it’s worth noting in games where Ertz has 10 or more catches this season, the Eagles are 0-4. So maybe the Rams should just let him catch everything thrown his way. (This would be a bad idea.)

Sunday Night Football: Philadelphia Eagles vs. Los Angeles Rams

Earlier this season, the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams had this date circled on the calendar as a potential NFC Championship Game preview. These two teams with exciting offenses and two of the best young quarterbacks in the game appeared on a collision course to battle over conference supremacy for years to come.

But as the 2018 season wore on, they’ve moved in decidedly different directions. The Eagles, reigning Super Bowl champions, didn’t even get Carson Wentz back from a torn ACL until Week 3. An up-and-down season followed, with major injuries, close losses and key mistakes on offense leaving the team scratching their heads. This week, the Eagles finally found out why their leader has been a step behind, at least. A broken vertebra, one Wentz has been dealing with quietly for weeks, will likely shut down their franchise player for the rest of 2018.

That puts Nick Foles up against his former Rams team with the Eagles needing a miracle. At 6-7, three wins would likely earn them the six seed in the NFC playoff race but they’ll need to beat the 11-2 Rams in L.A., the 9-4 Houston Texans, and the 6-7 Washington Redskins on the road in order to qualify. It’s a daunting task for the team even if they were at 100 percent; instead, the odds are stacked against the Eagles even mounting a Super Bowl defense.

They’ll run into an angry Rams team looking to prove themselves after an ugly loss to the Chicago Bears on the road last Sunday night. It cost them control of their own destiny as the team seeks home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. In order to have a chance, they’ll likely need to sweep their final three games with the Eagles their only serious obstacle. After that looms two opponents, the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers, with a combined record of 6-20.

Can the Rams take care of business? Or will Foles rise up to create another edition of the Philly special as he auditions for a role elsewhere in 2019?

Philadelphia at Los Angeles

Kickoff: Sunday, Dec. 16 at 8:20 p.m. ET
TV: NBC
Spread: Rams -11.5

Three Things To Watch

1. Can a ragtag bunch of substitute Eagles overcome a slew of injuries?

The Eagles have plenty of reasons they’ve fallen far behind the Rams in 2018. But one of them was left completely to the football gods. Just check this week’s injury report, where not a single Ram is listed with a physical problem as of Thursday’s writing. They’ve had a few setbacks, most notably wide receiver Cooper Kupp out for the year after tearing his ACL, but have most of their top-tier players in mint condition 14 weeks into the year.

Compare that to the Eagles, who had 10 players (nine for physical reasons) listed on Thursday’s report. They also have a number of key contributors out for the year: running back Jay Ajayi (ACL), free agent pickup wide receiver Mike Wallace (fibula), and starting cornerback Ronald Darby (ACL), to name a few. The Eagles have over a dozen(!) players on injured reserve, forcing relative unknowns or practice squad players to play major roles.

That lack of depth was evident last week against the Cowboys, when Amari Cooper torched the secondary for more than 200 yards and three touchdowns. Cre’Von Leblanc, while putting in a yeoman’s effort, is not going to keep up with the likes of Robert Woods, Brandin Cooks, and even Josh Reynolds. If running back Todd Gurley opens up the passing game, Jared Goff has a chance for a field day against this weakened defense.

Just last week, Dak Prescott threw for a career-best 455 yards. And according to the injury report, the Eagles are likely to be down another player in the secondary as Sidney Jones aggravated his hamstring injury in that Cowboys game and hasn’t practiced all week.

2. Can the Rams' offense get back on track?

Goff had arguably the worst game of his career against the Bears. A career-high four interceptions combined with a season-low 180 passing yards as he was picked apart at Soldier Field. A team that scores 32.7 points per game, third in the NFL behind the Chiefs and Saints, was limited to just six points.

One of the issues for the Rams during that game was an inability to commit to the run. Todd Gurley had just 11 carries for 28 yards, averaging a season-low 2.5 yards per carry. Second in the NFL with 1,203 rushing yards, you can’t expect Gurley to stay down for long. He now faces an Eagles defense that’s allowed the following to top-tier running backs:

Last week vs. Ezekiel Elliott: 113 yards, 4.0 yards per carry, 79 receiving yards

Two weeks ago vs. Adrian Peterson: A 90-yard touchdown run (98 rushing yards overall)

Three weeks ago vs. Saquon Barkley: 101 yards, 7.8 yards per carry, 41 receiving yards, two total touchdowns

There’s a clear pattern here. It’s a golden opportunity for Gurley to reestablish himself after the Cowboys’ comeback has Elliott threatening to take home the rushing title. And if Gurley does get going... this one could get ugly, early considering the Eagles’ inability to score in the first quarter. The Rams average 5.9 points to start the first 15 minutes, third in the NFL while the Eagles are dead last at 2.2.

3. How will Nick Foles do?

Foles will certainly be motivated to face his former team, especially with a 2019 job on the line. It’s likely he’ll move on to be a starter elsewhere after agreeing to back up an ailing Wentz for one last season. How could the Super Bowl MVP stay a backup the rest of his career?

That said, Foles has work to do to impress potential suitors. He hasn’t played since Week 2 against the Buccaneers and his stats this season are unimpressive: 451 yards, one touchdown, one interception and a pedestrian quarterback rating of 78.9. Foles did nothing to lose those games for the Eagles but he did little to win them; and back then, they had a full-fledged run game with Jay Ajayi and arguably similar receiving options surrounding him.

One benefactor of Foles’ emergence back onto the field: Nelson Agholor. Agholor had 16 catches the first two games; he hasn’t had more than six grabs since. A backup always changes the complexion of the offense and with Foles, look for a few deep plays to Agholor and potentially Golden Taint as the Philly offense should take a few more chances. At this point, they have nothing to lose.

You wonder how head coach Doug Pederson thinks heading into this weekend, by the way, after watching the Chargers go for two in the closing minute against the Chiefs and winning the game on "Thursday Night Football?" Pederson passed on the opportunity last week against the Cowboys, ended up losing in overtime and now he’s about to lose a shot at the playoffs.

Final Analysis

Nick Foles did an admirable job last season of keeping this Eagles team in the game against the Rams and hanging on after Carson Wentz suffered his ACL injury. But that thrilling, 43-35 victory in Los Angeles also came with a decidedly different team around him.

The Rams are hungry to avenge that defeat and healthy compared to an Eagles team just seven days removed from watching the NFC East (and potentially their Super Bowl defense) fully evaporate in overtime. It’s hard to see them recovering with the loss of their leader the cherry on top of an utterly disappointing 2018.

Prediction: Rams 34, Eagles 13

That's me the anxious guy lol. I hate night games.

As for the matchup, one intagible is that the Eagles are desperately fighting for a playoff berth. The Rams are kind of in cruise control in comparison. So we'll probably see them playing competitively tough for at least a quarter. That is, before Jared bombs the hell out of them!

Freak, Collinsworth again? Doesn't NBC have anyone better to do these games?

While watching the game yesterday, I told my wife that it would be nice to hear Kurt Warner doing the Rams game. I hate Collingsworth and Gary Danielson they both suck!

An overly optimistic prediction.

Los Angeles Rams vs. Philadelphia Eagles: week 15 bold predictions show a huge bounce back game
Once again in the national spotlight, the LA Rams have a big opportunity to make last week look like ancient history.
By joeyaucoin

The Los Angeles Rams are huge home favorites in their Week 15 game vs. the Philadelphia Eagles, who just happen to be the defending Super Bowl champs. In case you haven’t been reading or watching TV that has “sports” in the description, the Eagles are now starting last year’s Super Bowl MVP at QB, aka: Nick Foles. This season has been quite a ride.

The game is literally set-up in a such a way that the Rams could easily look like Super Bowl favorites again. And these days, last week is the new last year. That being stated, the Rams seem poised to pick apart the weak Eagles defensive backs while also having a strong day on defense as they face off against an Eagles offense that could have timing issues. So, how is this thing going to play out you ask?

Let’s get bold.

Coach McVay doesn’t call any passing plays for the first two drives
The Chicago Bears were keyed in on Sean McVay’s play calling last Sunday night and I believe that one of the game plans going into this Eagles matchup is all about setting up the play action. Look for some jet sweeps to mix in with the Todd Gurley II show. And yes, Mr. Gurley is going to have a monster game with over 28 touches and 200+ yards on the ground.

Jared Goff will throw for six touchdowns
With a first quarter that will be all Todd Gurley, Goff will step up and use the play action as a way of getting some easy red zone TDs to TE Gerald Everett and my man, WR Robert Woods. Also, the chestpunt will get at least two of those TDs.

Nick Foles is going to have an embarrassing game
The panic button will be permanently broken after this game once the Eagles faithful get their eyes on QB Nick Foles — I don’t think he’s going to be the same guy as last year. I’m not a scientist, so I can’t give you a legit reason why I feel like Foles is going to choke, it’s just an optimistic feeling that lives in my heart.

This game will be over by the second quarter
Coach McVay is going to come out with all of his weapons on full blast. In fact, this will be a complete and impressive game by every unit of the team — an absolute annihilation. Rams win, 56-6.
-------------------
A more down-to-earth prediction.

https://www.turfshowtimes.com/2018/...-rams-week-15-film-preview-running-in-circles

Philadelphia Eagles at Los Angeles Rams film preview: Running in circles
The run-defense is going to be tested once again, this time by the Eagles and running back Josh Adams.
By TG25

It’s another week where the Los Angeles defense will face an offense that will rely most on what the Rams can’t seem to stop — the run.

Carson Wentz is out. Nick Foles, a guy who hasn’t thrown a football in a live game all year, is in. The Eagles are going to rely on the run-game to help Foles get adjusted to live-action once more. Just in time, too. Because the LA run-defense is the worst it’s been all year.

In the last seven games, the defense allowed most than 100 rushing yards in five of the last seven games, and currently allow around 145 yards per-game. The Eagles running game is looking better as of late, having recorded more than 100 yards in two of the last three games. By comparison, the Eagles rushed for more than 100 yards just twice in a 6-week period prior to the last three games.

Some figured the running game was “resurgent” after the 127-yard performance against the New York Giants on Nov. 25. Josh Adams earned season-highs of carries and rushing yards in that game and he became the lead back in this inconsistent running game.

Dec_14_2018_11_05_41.gif

Corey Clement, who would have split time with Josh Adams, is on the IR. Adams was already expected to be the No. 1 back after his performance in recent weeks. He is the most balanced runner on the team despite his large stature. He can take advantage of the small windows the Philly o-line creates and has enough speed to get to the edge.

Dec_15_2018_10_19_36.gif

The Eagles never really gave Adams many touches prior to the game against the New York Giants game at the end of last month. He saw a lot of single digit carries, if any at all. Now, he’s the premiere back because it’s him and Darren Sproles who are all that’s left of the running backs.

Dec_14_2018_11_11_08.gif

Sproles is still good, by the way.

Dec_14_2018_11_08_15.gif

What could give the Rams defense some hope is the fact that Philly’s offensive line is subpar. It ranks towards the bottom of the league in run-blocking. The run-blocking allows Eagles’ running backs to gain 4.22 yards per-carry (19th), according to FootballOutsiders.

Dec_15_2018_10_26_42.gif

The Rams should’ve taken note from the Eagles’ game against the Cowboys last week because Dallas broke the streak of 100-yard rushing performances by holding Philadelphia to 34 yards. How? Well, the Cowboys stacked the box and overwhelmed the offensive line with stunts and mismatches.

Watch Randy Gregory (94) crash the gap to allow Jaylon Smith the opening to come up and help drop Adams behind the line of scrimmage.

Adams finished with 36 yards on seven carries, but still managed to break off two big runs. But Dallas’ run-defense never relented, stopping any chance of the Eagles building on the momentum of big runs.

Dec_15_2018_13_52_46.gif

The Rams were dominated against Chicago after the first quarter, which is another trend of the run-defense — deteriorating as time goes on. The defense looked good in the first quarter, keeping the Bears to small runs. But they were worn down soon after that.

Dec_15_2018_13_51_41.gif

The amount of space created against the front seven is astounding. If they want to rebound from the Chicago loss, they need to contain their space and plug up the running lanes. Adams is a great runner and can take advantage of anything the Rams give him. If LA didn’t learn and address the mistakes they made against Chicago, it’s going to be another long Sunday.

I can actually see the Eagles putting up some points. Foles isn’t that terrible and their offense aside from RB is still very good.

I agree. Let’s not underestimate what they can do. Chris Long still has an axe to grind, too. Remember last year?
