He was a pretty damn good MLB last year, he played some good football. So it has to be something this year because he doesn't look like the same guy right now.

Over pursuing a lot too and I think the two are very, very related.

It could be a sign they are still learning so I'm holding out hope for improvement..........

He was ok at MLB, nothing special.

His play recognition has always been terrible. Its easier to disguise with less responsibilities for a MLB in a 4-3 than where he is playing now. If he is in position he does great, but more often than not he is terribly misreading plays. The guy he took over for (JL) was knocked hard for being bad at getting off blocks, but Ogletree and Barron make it look like he was an all-pro at it.

The only "tweaks" we might see are replacement of some starters.

This defensive scheme is proven. The players need to execute.
I think you hit the nail on the head but I don't think they're going to replace anybody until they realize that that player is just not getting the new scheme.

Rotating players in and out this early in the new defensive scheme may cause more harm than good.

The evaluation period was in Camp.
Now it's time to see how they play together.

I just think it's a couple games too early to start pulling your starters we're second stringers just for the sake of it.

Continuity is important as a whole in the defense as well.

This defensive scheme is proven. The players need to execute it but they're not. And btw our defense did not play well vs the Colts, they were soft as F and if we hadn't jumped ahead due to terrible QB play by the Colts and their shooting themselves in the foot we would have given up a metric @$$ ton of yards on the ground.

There are no changes in scheme coming. It's a simplistic deal where the players need to produce plain and simple. And lastly I see a LOT of people doubting Wade Phillips here and elsewhere, and think it's premature. Why waste your time doubting him when his record clearly demonstrates what he's capable of? Look at the performance of defenses in their first year under him.

Truth is Donald holding out hurt this team. Quinn playing like he's in a wheelchair hurts this team. Our two "speedy" ILBs getting road graded in the run game hurts this team. Alexander looking lost hurts this team. It's the players doing it wrong. Let's settle down and let him tune it by getting guys to execute or replacing them. By season's end there's every reason to think this defense will be among the league leaders.

Oh and lastly let's quit acting like last year's defense was elite. I see a lot of that too and it's not true. They will be better this year in just about every metric IMO, think there's a really good chance of that.

I agree with most of these comments. I agree that execution is a big part of success (see the offense). However, Tree is not a 3-4 tackling ILB. He's not your Lawrence Timmons, hes your 4-3 Chad Greenway (in his prime)sideline to sideline OLB (with way more athleticism). Barron is also a sideline to sideline, zone coverage type LB. we don't have the newly added Ruben Foster on this team. Wades D consisted of the Danny Trevathans, the Brian Cushings. Big, physical, plug the hole with strength type guys. We don't have that and THAT hurts this team just as much if not more than pure execution. These two we have do not get off blocks very well, they don't blow up pulling guards; that hurts the team.

Again, I'm with you Merlin on the majority of this post brother. Good post.

The word is that they are going to move Brockers to DT and put Walker at NT. I can't wait to see how well that works! It sounds real good to me!!

I’d be stoked if we gave Christian some snaps. He’s earned his chance. Countess blew his.
Have a feeling Jon Johnson is going to have a coming out party against Dallas bro! You heard it here first!

Honestly, except for a few games last year, our defense wasn’t great. We’re generating a lot more turnovers this year. It will get better.
I definitely disagree about that if our offense was as good as it is so far this year we would have been in the playoffs. I think it said something like since 2011 he haven’t had anyone Rush for 200 yards against us. Greg Williams had this defense humming at all levels. I still have hope that it could turn around but I really wish we would have stayed at the 4-3 until Wade got his guys in the next draft

Yeah he’s definitely still learning his responsibilities are a lot different in this scheme and remember this is basically him relearning the mlb position all over again. But people were worried about Barron but he has definitely outplayed Ogletree so far

Last years defense wasn’t elite because the offense was simply terrible. If last years defense had this offense you can’t tell me they wouldn’t be rated higher. It’s ok to give props to Williams just because we got Wade now. Their resume are pretty much the same when it comes to defenses and Wade had more talent then Williams had

I honestly believe we are being too aggressive (if there is such a thing ) ...our front 7 is spending a lot of of time in the opposing teams backfield we just aren't making the play when we Get there . It's like we are rushing the passer even on run plays .. just a bit of composure and a touch of discipline and I think things get better

I'm more concerned with player execution than scheme or even player "fits" right now.

I don't think we can start making a judgement call on some of this stuff till after the 1st quarter of the season so I think this game will be very telling even with the injuries compromising seeing some of our starters.

Kudos to the guys who rewatched tape, at this point, it seems like we have to see if the players improve at their jobs before we start to talk major scheme change or regarding players as ill fits. They have to be given a chance to correct their mistakes.

@Soul Surfer - missed your post 1st time around. Completely agree.

I'd be ok with player executions, if they dont start performing. But am willing to wait til after week 4 before nominating any players for execution.

I hope so. He was a high pick and seems like a smart dude.
Yeah... something about him and the name got me intrigued. Looks like he gots some skills just needs get acclimated. Outside of watching Quinn/Smith, Lawerence /Whitworth, I’m looking forward to watching our safeties and see how they do! I pray JJ is ready for action!

You think? Maybe I was just praying it was the other way! Lol and reading to cowpoke forums they seem to think he’s going to be playing over Whitworth which I pray he will! Hopefully Havenstein will be able to limit him!

You gotta consider the source when getting your info from a cowgirls fan, they are cowgirl fans after all.
