Evidently, Cooper Kupp has made a big impression with the Los Angeles Rams.

With fall camp a few days away, the former Eastern Washington All-American already is atop the preseason depth chart for the team that drafted him in April.

The Rams recently provided an unofficial list of preseason starters. There were few surprises, but Kupp was one of them.

That may raise a few eyebrows among the pros but not for Eagles fans, who watched Kupp break every major receiving record in the Football Championship Subdivision during his four years in Cheney.

From the first minicamp, the Yakima native impressed coach Sean McVay and offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur with his reliability.

“I think the first thing you know about Cooper is he’s a pro and you can see that,” LaFleur said.

“He came in here not like most rookies do. He’s an extremely polished route runner who’s got great hands, is a precise route-runner. You can tell he works at his craft each and every day,” LaFleur said.

Kupp likely made the top of the depth chart because the list is based on a three-wide receiver set. The other projected starters are Tavon Austin, a four-year veteran out of West Virginia; and projected go-to receiver Robert Woods.

Woods, a former USC star who played the last four years at Buffalo, signed a five-year, $39 million contract with the Rams this spring.

Kupp’s chances for early playing time increased on July 14, when second-year receiver Mike Thomas was hit with a four-game suspension for violating NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Thomas won’t be eligible to play until Oct. 2.

Expectations for Kupp are all over the board. NumberFire.com recently projected that Kupp would have 29 catches this year. However, Peter Schrager from Good Morning Football predicts a 70-catch season.

The Rams open camp on Wednesday afternoon at UC Irvine, with rookies reporting first. Full camp begins on Saturday.

The Rams open the preseason at home on Aug. 12 against the Dallas Cowboys.

I'm as big of a Cooper Kupp homer as any here, but Robert Woods has to be #1 right now because he has had success in this league. Kupp is just that guy we thrill about what COULD BE.

Tavon has to step it up now as he is the surefire downfield threat. Oh, Kupp and Woods are both capable of sneaking deep, but Tavon can use his sheer speed and elite quickness to outright dust most defenders. Our TEs best to ready to bring it to balance out the receiving crew. With the early focus sure to be on the Express!, there will be plenty of opportunities for Jared & his fly guys to shine.

TA will benefit from the additions of Woods & Kupp more than Woods & Kupp benefiting from the presence of TA.

I expect the Rams to struggle with the deep ball, they probably don't have anyone they can count on there so chances are they'll end up in the bottom third of the league in that stat. But that said, the improvements in the WR corps will raise their passing game considerably. I think they'll make it into the low teens (16th-19th range) in overall passing yards this season.

Now if Tavon has a breakout season... Well, not gonna get myself too geeked up there. I just want to see an upgraded passing offense and I think there's a good chance of that happening.

Oh and I think Kupp will end up right around the 60 catch mark. If it's more than that, which is possible, he's ROY.

Kupp was drafted to start game 1 so it's not surprising. This is a prove it year for Woods. In reality he signed a 2 year contract and even then 2018 has only 3m dead cap. So he needs to reach his potential this season to not be passed by the younger WR's. .

The WR position has been significantly upgraded regardless of to what extent they struggle this season. These guys will at least be where they're supposed to be, and will catch the ball.

Tavon .....is the surefire downfield threat.
Until he proves it he is not a "surefire" anything and until he proves it he's about as big of a "threat" as a paper tiger.

Tavon scares no one at this point.

Agreed, TA is a nightmare when given the ball in open space and good blocking. Consistent drives maintained by other receivers will setup that

Agree. Kupp was suppose to be way ahead of the curve for a rookie WR. So far the reports are confirming that his route running, knowledge and hands are as advertised.

Interesting take on Woods. Yes, he has to come out as a leader. He has to have a good year but, I doubt they let him go if he doesn't have a great year. He has to be solid all around with routes, hands, blocking and leadership. After next year he has no cap hit for being cut. I think that will be a more pressure year with being two years in the system with Goff. At his age I think he improves year to year for a few years.

I expect so. In fact, I have noted before that Tavon needs other playmakers to reduce the focus NFL DCs have on him. Gurley helped in 2015-2016, but more is needed. If Tavon can establish himself as a bonafide deep threat, then he can return the favor by drawing more than his share of defenders.
