Chris Simms a few weeks before the draft: Todd Gurley in Top 10 Would Be One of ‘Dumbest Picks in History of NFL Draft’. His reasons are: 1) Gurley’s medical history (Players who tear ACL’s have a 33% chance of re-tearing) 2) the number of RB disappointments picked in the Top 10 in the last 10 years, and 3) Nick Chubb’s performance replacing Gurley after he got hurt (11 TD’s, 168 yd.s/game, 1,179 yds in 7 Games) How good is Gurley if Chubb can get those numbers in Georgia’s offense?

That's a pretty good case. I would think though that the 33% ACL re-injury rate varies a lot depending on the specifics of the case and lacks context. Is that 33% within two years or twenty years?

These are valid points and they are exactly what scares me about the pick.

I think it is a major risk. But, at 10 if there was no one the team liked there better, or as well for the 10 overall pick, I guess it was an easy chance to take.

If Simms feels that strongly about it, why limit it to Top 10? He should have said 1st round. It's the Dumbest pick in history at #10, but what about #14 or #15 (which all indications were that Gurley would have gone by 15 if not picked by the Rams)? Would he be ok with it at #15?

Nick Chubb will be the best college running back in the country next year. So not really a fair comparison because he eventually goes in the top of the first round too. I agree with the ACL thing though. Very scary.

Nick Chubb's performance has nothing to do with Gurley's play. The reason there was no drop off is because Chubb is an elite talent at the RB position too. Just because one player is great doesn't mean that another isn't also great. Chubb is going in the first round.

Other draft picks have nothing to do with Gurley either. Just because Trent Richardson sucks, Gurley automatically sucks? No. It doesn't work like that. They're all individuals.

Only Time will Tell! Hopefully, Simms is wrong and Gurley goes on to have a great career with the Rams!

Never been impressed by Chris Simms - not as a failed QB at Texas or as an analyst, he's proven repeatedly that he has no clue about the Rams

Gurley is gonna be a beast in 2015

Gurley was above guys like Chubb and Michel. Shouldn't that be a testament to his abilities rather than an indictment?

Gurley's stats in his junior year - six games, 123 attempts, 911 yards, nine touchdowns rushing. Twelve receptions, fifty-seven yards.

Chubb's stats in his freshman year - thirteen games, 219 attempts, 1,547 yards, fourteen touchdowns rushing, Eighteen receptions, 213 yards, two touchdowns.

Michel's stats in his freshman year - eight games, sixty-four attempts, 410 yards, five touchdowns. Seven receptions, 106 yards, one touchdown.

Remember that Gurley put up his numbers in less than half of the games that Chubb started, in two less games than Michel played. And the last game wasn't even a full one.

As for backs in the top ten...none of them were half as talented as Gurley was. Hey, remember guys like Dickerson and Faulk? Both of them went with the second overall pick in their respective drafts. Different era, I know, but if you can play, you can play. Jackson actually was rated as a top ten talent in 2004. He fell to the 24th overall pick because he had a knee injury that required surgery. Sounds familiar, right?

I wonder how many 10 year old females have access to NFL weight training and doctors?

Every individual is different as is the injury itself. If the ACL tear is clean and more importantly .. the meniscus is fully in tact, than the greater chance of full recovery. They need to make sure that all his muscle memory is back as well as HIS confidence in the knee. Lots of times, it's thinking about and over compensating is what causes another injury.

This is nonsense. People keep referring to the 33% number like they know something. That number ISN'T the same leg, like he said, it is also for both men and women, it is for ALL athletes at ALL levels, not NFL players who receive the very best treatment. There are no studies of just NFL players who received the newest treatments yet, but the reffered to study is not relevant.

When and where former picks were chosen and how they did is irrelevant. Bad picks and steals don't negate another player's value. That's like saying they wouldn't draft Manning at 10 because the Rams grabbed Kurt Warner who wasn't even in the league. Apparently, we should skip the draft and just bring in stock boys. If the Rams just chose the next AP and have to sit him for a season, it was well worth top 10.

How good is Gurley if Chubb is also good in Georgia? What? How good was SJ39 if Faulk was also good on the Rams? This is just silly. Georgia DOES make a lot of holes but Chubb is also an excellent RB. He's elusive, breaks tackles, has break away speed. You can't watch either of these guys and deny their talent just because they have a good o-line.

Also .. in that study posted above ... for MALES, the re-occurrence factor was more like 11%

No one is saying it isn't more likely in a player with a previous tear, but statistics like the one he presented and misquoted, showing he probably didn't even read it, are meaningless. It's far more about the type of tear and player and how he responded and was treated than anything else. That's exactly why it's gone from a career ender to a 9 month recovery.

Personally, I don't want to see him until after the bye. Just as Rams Addiction mentioned in their podcast (probably stole it from me ), week 7 will be 11 months and well worth the wait. Bring him in against the Browns and let him make hay as the second back for awhile. He gets the soft spot in the schedule to become accustomed to full speed and then we roll the niners and hawks in their own houses for a PO run.
