Been perusing some Saints and Pats message boards to read their reactions. About a 50-50 split positive/negative on Cooks. I’m paraphrasing, but here are a few reactions that got my attention:

One trick pony

3 teams in 3 years, something stinks with that kid

Speed guy superb hands disciplined routes but major drawbacks. No YAC and goes down at first touch

Explodes for 125 yds and then disappears for 2-3 games

Let him go underachieve for someone else

In the end it’s about production, and his yardage numbers prove who he is

He’s slightly better than Sammy

Anyway.... kinda disappointed to see some of the negativity about Cooks. I’m definitely pumped that McVay has his deep threat— seems like the deep threat is key to making McVays offense functlon. But after reading that so many fans were never enthused, I gotta say it dampens my enthusiasm for a long-term big money deal for Cooks when he hasn’t played a down for us yet. But...in McVay I trust. He needs his speed guy, and Cooks has that.

The problem is that very few Patriots fans would ever acknowledge that they let a good player get away and Saints fans are not much different it seems.

Now having said that...

Had we drafted Cooks and Peters with those draft picks, people would call that the best draft ever.

Hard to argue with the Rams strategy and if they can sign most of these guys... everyone’s reservation will go away.
I remember McVay talking last year about the draft, they looked beyond the draft to see if there were better players available, they've done that again this year. The way I look at it they've drafted Cooks and Peters in the 1st 2 rounds and as you said @CGI_Ram - if they HAD drafted these 2 guys in the draft it would be the draft of the century... I've looked at the highlight tape of these 2 guys and I wouldn't be surprised if they would have been top 15 draft picks this year.

The fact is McVay thinks Cooks is a better fit than anyone else in this year's draft at #23 - I'm good with that.

Cooks was a beast in NO, sounds a bit like sour grapes to me from both his past teams' fanbase

2017 - 1,082yds - 7TD (longest: 64TD)
2016 - 1,173yds - 8TD (longest: 98TD)
2015 - 1,138yds - 9TD (longest: 71TD)

I was a huge advocate of getting Watkins here - IMO Cooks is going to be a bigger threat than Sammy - who on earth are DBs going to cover?? Cooks, Woods or Kupp?!?

2018 is going to be a lot of fun to watch guys :yay:

I think our fan base is underestimating the jump Kupp is going to take this year. He was responsible for multiple drive killing mistakes last season. He won’t let that happen again. Games like Seattle and Minn will be a lot different.

He had an amazing rookie season to be fair, I'm with you, I think he's going to eliminate any errors for next season, couple with an improving rapport with Goff, our O is looking good.

EDIT: I'd like to see our TE's progression improve though

.

Cooks was so bad in new england that the team tried to sign him long term. When they refused to pay market rate they decided to trade him.

The saints didn't want to pay him because Michael Thomas turned out to be a stud and they needed to fix their shit d, so it was an opportunity for them to get an extra 1st rounder to fill in some defensive holes.

Per Wyche if the Rams end up extending Cooks and Donald, it will quite the masses and add to the value of the trade.

if the cheats made these moves these two clowns would be slurping them up sooooo much. would be a slurpathon. case in point last season when they made a few moves and the nfl media clown think was that they were going undefeated.

.

SLURPATHON :

Can you define this word? It sounds really gay.

it's all in your perspective.

Maybe so. But to date the only big contracts we've seen doled out by the Rams under Stan & Kevin have been mistakes where they overpaid median types. They have lost the better players they drafted and developed. And we cannot blame it all on Fish as proven by the Ogletree signing.

And this particular offseason instead of making long term moves to sustain a window of opportunity we have instead seen not only short term moves but moves that bring in elite players who increase the pressure on that front office to get them signed. That is on top of some other significant problematic areas pending FA like the OL with three players hittin the market next offseason. I don't see why it's such a problem to acknowledge that the concerns are real up until we at least start seeing some guys signed as long-term pieces.

Anyway. Maybe I'm greedy, but all the losing we've endured as fans makes me want to enjoy a long window of opportunity. Not a year or two and rebuild under a new GM. Or a year or two followed by crash and burn like we had during the GSoT era. Which, btw, was directly related to the inability of a front office to handle a winning team IMO.

Realistically he's probably right that all of these moves will not work out. THE MOST important moves that we must make work are Peters and Cooks. They're both under 26 and are top tier players at their position. I could see Suh and Sheilds possibly failing to work out. But Talib, Peters, and Cooks all are proven AND proven against one on one scenarios on tape. This is key it means they have a high probability to fit in any scheme..

I don't get how they say Patriots got the better of the deal. 1st Rd picks are historically 50% chance of bust. We replace that 50% (and it's apparent we would've drafted a WR) with a player that is 100% not a bust, who has produced in 2 different systems, and is TGE SAME AGE as a lot of these kids in the draft! That's like going into a casino to gamble with a garuntee of winning.

There's not much risk to the Suh deal. Shields may not pan out, but he's our #4 CB, so no big deal.

They don't really need to. Each of those fanbases has a top 5 all time QB. They made Julian Edelman and Marques Colston into house hold names. Both QBs throughout their careers had been successful with basically late round skill players.

In hindsight, it's kind of a surprise that the Saints spent a first on Cooks for that reason - maybe they thought with Brees he could reach Antonio Brown status. These are rare occurrences where all these trades make/made sense for all teams involved (if the Rams can sign him long term).

They definitely need to get a few long term deals done this offseason. If that happens I'll feel a little at ease but until then I am also very nervous about where they currently stand with free agents next year. Hopefully, Cooks and Donald can get signed before the draft which should make a lot of other dominoes fall.
