The Los Angeles Rams opened the season with a 30-27 victory on the road against the Carolina Panthers.
It was a nail-biter, but the Rams ultimately pulled it out in the end. All things considered, this was a solid victory for a team that didn’t play the majority of their key players during the preseason. Here are five key takeaways from the afternoon in Charlotte.

Defense bends (a lot) but doesn’t break
The Rams have always had a “bend but don’t break” mentality on defense since Wade Phillips took over as the team’s defensive coordinator.
Against the Panthers, they bent about as much as Mr. Fantastic in a fight with Dr. Doom. But they didn’t break, and forced a few major turnovers when they needed to.
It felt like a miracle when the Panthers finished the first half with just three points. They were making plenty of plays against the Rams, but L.A. showed up when it really counted. It wasn’t nearly as pretty in the second half, but the defense still was able to come alive in a few big moments and did just enough to help the Rams win the game.

Dante Fowler and Cory Littleton led the charge on the defensive side of the ball today. Fowler had two monster sacks on Cam Newton. Littleton wasn’t perfect in pass coverage, but he was everywhere on the field and made things happen. He led the team with 14 total tackles, forced a fumble (which he recovered), and had a clutch interception late in the game that helped seal the deal. On a quiet afternoon for Aaron Donald, these two made up for it.
It was far from a perfect outing for the Rams defense, but they did enough to make us think there will not be a big drop off from last year. When you lose three starters from last season, it’s a good start.

Gurley struggles early, finishes strong
It was a wild ride this afternoon for anyone who is invested in Todd Gurley.

Entering the game, nobody knew for certain what would happen with Gurley in Week 1 following a summer of well-documented concerns about his knee. Gurley played the entirety of the Rams first two drives, but only touched the ball three times.

On drive No. 3, where the Rams started in the red zone, backup Malcolm Brown trotted onto the field. He scored the first touchdown of the game.

Brown continued to be the better back when on the field for most of the game. The Rams would give each of them the entirety of a drive when they switched off. Brown was the lead back on a 75-yard drive capped off by his touchdown in the third quarter. When Gurley returned to the game on the following drive, he fumbled a pitch. It seemed that not only would we see a full-blown split backfield in the coming weeks, but that Brown might actually be the better of the two backs for now.

Luckily, Gurley got it together in the fourth quarter. Gurley plodded for 41 straight yards on four plays to lead the Rams to another touchdown. Oddly enough, Gurley was pulled in the red zone in favor of Darrel Henderson, who ran the ball into the back of an offensive lineman before Goff threw a touchdown the next play.

If Gurley can look like he did in the fourth quarter against New Orleans next week, he should remain the lead back and receive the bulk of the snaps. Brown was only the lead back on three of the team’s 13 drives against Carolina. He just happened to be the one who was in on a few touchdown drives. Gurley ended the game with more touches, more yards, and a higher YPC average than Brown. He should remain the clear lead back leading forward.

Special teams plays uncharacteristically poorly
It may have been the worst outing for John Fassel’s special teams unit since Pharoh Cooper fumbled two punts and cost the Rams a victory against Atlanta in the 2017 playoffs.

There was no shortage of missed opportunities by this unit today. Hekker booted off a 7-yard punt on a near-block. Later on, he was actually blocked deep in Rams territory. Zuerlein was having a nice day until he missed a crucial 41-yard field goal near the end of the game. He also had a kickoff go out of bounds.

You can’t chalk this one up to rust as Zuerlein, Hekker, and quite a few special teamers saw plenty of action in the preseason. But it’s still hard to call this a concern until we see it again. The Rams have consistently had one of the best special teams units in the NFL under the leadership of Fassel and his two boots. They’ve earned the benefit of the doubt here.

Shaky afternoon for Jared Goff
Two major thoughts pop up when thinking about Goff’s first game in 2019: he missed Cooper Kupp, and he didn’t look great.

Boy, did he really miss having Kupp in the lineup. Goff completed four passes to Kupp on the Rams’ first seven snaps. Kupp finished with seven catches for 46 yards on 10 targets.

Overall, this was not the best day for Goff. He failed to find a few open targets and overthrew a few more. His lone interception was an ugly pass behind Robert Woods on a crossing route. Goff took a few chances like he always does, but he didn’t really hit on any today.

Goff had some rust to shake off, but this does trigger some minor concerns here. He was not great on the road last season. You can blame the cold for a few of them, but one of his worst games of the year was indoors against the Lions. It’s also worth noting that Goff struggled against the Raiders last season, although he did seem to find himself in the second half of that game.

Don’t be concerned about Goff moving forward. It’s one game. But we’ll be watching closely when the Rams travel to Cleveland in Week 3.

No excuses next week
Outside of special teams, you can use the same excuse for every single Ram who didn’t play great in this game: “They haven’t played since February, give them a chance to get back into the swing of things.”

Sure. The Rams struggled in the first half against Oakland last year. Carolina is a much better team than Oakland was last year. Anybody who expected the team to come in and blow the Panthers out was delusional. This was a little too close for comfort, but it was a nice win for the Rams, all things considered.

The excuses won’t be available in an NFC championship rematch next week. The rust has been shaken off. It’s go-time. The Rams will need to look much better than they did today to take down the Saints in Los Angeles next week.

Rams beat Panthers 30-27: Instant analysis from Week 1 win
usatsi_13329139.jpg

By: Cameron DaSilva | 2 hours ago

The Los Angeles Rams went into Charlotte and beat the Carolina Panthers on the road Sunday, traveling across the country for the season opener. It was an impressive win by Sean McVay’s team, beginning the year with another victory – the third time they’ve started 1-0 under McVay.
The Panthers certainly made things interesting late by scoring a touchdown with under two minutes left to play, making it a one-possession game. The Rams put the game on ice, however, thanks to Carolina only having one timeout.

Number to know: 169
The Rams controlled this one with the ground game. They gained 169 yards on the ground in this one, winning the time of possession battle by managing the clock with an effective rushing attack. The Panthers also ran the ball well, but the Rams did it with two backs who split the carries.

Player of the game: Cory Littleton
Stats: 14 tackles, 1 FF, 1 FR, 1 INT, 2 PBU

Game notes
  • Todd Gurley and Malcolm Brown took turns playing certain possessions, but it was clear early on that Brown had the hot hand. Gurley fumbled once officially on a pitch from Jared Goff, but he also coughed up another one in the red zone that was recovered by Rob Havenstein on a play that didn’t count due to a holding penalty. Fortunately, Gurley turned it around on a late drive, bringing his rushing total up to 80 yards on 11 carries with 6:37 left to play.
  • The run defense really had issues with Christian McCaffrey. Even with Cam Newton not running as much as he usually does, the Rams struggled to contain McCaffrey on the ground. The defensive line was pushed around and allowed some big running lanes. Attempted arm tackles really hurt the team, too, allowing McCaffrey to gain big yardage after contact.
  • Cory Littleton was a stud on Sunday. He picked off Cam Newton late in the fourth quarter to put the game on ice, undercutting the throw for an easy interception. On the opening drive of the game, Littleton punched the ball out of D.J. Moore’s hands and recovered the fumble, which was also an excellent play.
  • Goff didn’t have a great game, but he was effective when he needed to be. His touchdown pass to Tyler Higbee with 6:37 left to play gave the Rams the cushion they needed, leading a huge drive down the field for six.
  • Aaron Donald was shut down by Carolina. He only had one tackle and one quarterback hit, having very little impact on the game. The Panthers keyed on him and sent extra blockers his way, but that hasn’t stopped him in the past.
  • Dante Fowler Jr. took advantage of his opportunities Sunday. He had two sacks, three quarterback hits and two tackles for loss, capitalizing on poor blocking by the Panthers.
  • Greg Zuerlein had a couple of miscues, booting a kickoff out of bounds and yanking a 40-yard field goal attempt badly to the left. He was solid otherwise, but those blips on the radar are atypical for him.
  • Robert Woods led the way in the receiving department with eight catches for 70 yards. Cooper Kupp played his first game since tearing his ACL last November and had seven catches for 46 yards. Brandin Cooks was limited to 39 yards on two catches.

As I said in a couple of threads, this was a tough opener... And they did enough to win. Good teams do that.

A lot of sloppy play today by good and bad teams.

KC looked good, but Reid is old school, he played his starters quite a bit in preseason.

Todd Gurley shares backfield with Malcolm Brown in Rams win over Panthers
Yahoo Sports

Chris Cwik,Yahoo Sports 5 hours ago

Malcolm Brown steals the spotlight from Todd Gurley in the Rams backfield

Maybe there was a reason the Los Angeles Rams kept quiet about Todd Gurley all offseason. Gurley saw a reduced workload during Sunday’s win against the Carolina Panthers.
The 25-year-old Gurley finished the game with 14 carries and 97 yards. He also had a catch for four yards. That was a far cry from 2018, when Gurley averaged 22.5 touches in his 14 starts.
For a while, Gurley wasn’t even the Rams’ top option at running back Sunday. Malcolm Brown had more carries and more yards than Gurley until the fourth quarter, and also stole two early touchdowns from Gurley. Brown finished with 11 carries and 53 yards against the Panthers.
Gurley came into the season as a major question mark after a knee injury limited his production down the stretch in 2018. He had just 10 carries in the Rams’ Super Bowl LIII loss to the New England Patriots.
The Rams didn’t answer any of those questions in the offseason. Gurley didn’t play a single snap for the Rams in the preseason.
Gurley may not have received his usual workload, but it didn’t matter as the Rams still went on to win 30-27. And while Gurley may have started the game slowly, he was a huge factor late in the game, closing out the victory with some key runs in the fourth quarter.
Gurley may not have received the workload many fantasy players wished for, but the strategy worked well for the Rams.

Rams studs and duds from Week 1: RBs shine, Jared Goff rusty
gettyimages-1173188309.jpg

By: Cameron DaSilva | 4 hours ago

The Los Angeles Rams never trailed in the game on Sunday, but that didn’t mean it was an easy victory. They escaped Charlotte with a 30-27 win, coming away victorious in Week 1 for the third straight year.
The Panthers put up a tough fight on their own turf and showed great resilience, but the Rams’ ground game took over late and put the game on ice.

Here are the studs and duds from Sunday’s victory.

Studs: RBs Malcolm Brown and Todd Gurley
Much like the way they used their running backs in the playoffs, the Rams went with a shared backfield on Sunday. Todd Gurley got significantly more playing time than Brown, but they were separated by just three carries. Both of them were effective as the Rams gashed the Panthers’ stout run defense for 166 yards rushing (including kneel-downs).
Gurley finished the day with 97 yards on 14 carries, and Brown had 53 yards of his own on just 11 attempts. Brown scored two touchdowns, too. It was a productive day for both players and they were a big reason the Rams held on to win.

Dud: QB Jared Goff
Goff was shaky against the Panthers this weekend, looking like someone who had some rust he needed to knock off. It wasn’t as ugly as the Super Bowl or his performance against the Bears last season, but it didn’t inspire much confidence, either. He completed 23 of 39 passes for only 186 yards (4.8 YPA) with one touchdown and an interception.

The pick he threw wasn’t a bad decision, just simply a poor throw behind Robert Woods on a crossing route. He held the ball too long at times and missed a wide-open Woods down the field on a bad overthrow, which is typical of a quarterback early in the season.

It wasn’t his best performance, but it didn’t cost the Rams the game, either.

Stud: LB Cory Littleton
The Rams have ongoing conversations about extending Littleton, and they might want to get that done before his price goes up. He was a star on defense Sunday, playing a pivotal role in the victory with two huge turnovers.

First, he punched the ball out of D.J. Moore’s hands on the opening drive for a fumble, which he recovered. Then late in the fourth quarter, he picked off Cam Newton and returned it 26 yards to help seal the victory.

He finished the day with 14 tackles, two passes defensed, a forced fumble and recovery, and an interception. His 14 tackles were three more than anyone else in the game.

Dud: DT Aaron Donald
It’s not often you see Donald finish with one tackle and a single quarterback hit, but that’s what the Panthers held him to. Carolina’s quick passing game negated him as a pass rusher and in the running game, he was a non-factor. However, what Donald’s mere presence does is force teams to change their game plan.

That’s what the Panthers did, taking very few shots downfield and instead opting for mostly checkdowns and underneath passes.

Donald had zero sacks in Week 1 the last two years and still went on to win Defensive Player of the Year both times, so there’s no cause for concern.

Stud: S Taylor Rapp
Wade Phillips said Rapp wouldn’t just be a backup in this one, and he wasn’t lying. Rapp played a significant role on defense, recording four tackles in the game. He was in tight coverage on Greg Olsen on a crucial third-down incompletion to force a field goal attempt and was all over the field throughout the day.

Eric Weddle is expected to be OK after suffering a concussion, but the Rams have a very capable replacement in Rapp if Weddle misses time.

Dud: WR Brandin Cooks
Cooks struggled to get open on Sunday and caught just two of six targets for 39 yards. His 24-yarder was a good play, but other than that, it was a quiet day for Cooks. Part of that had to do with Goff’s inaccuracy and overall struggles, but it simply wasn’t the game we’ve come to expect from him.

It’s worth noting that he drew a pass interference penalty, which went for 16 yards.

Stud: Offensive line
For all the worries about the offensive line, the unit performed well against the Panthers – especially given the talent Carolina has up front. Brian Allen had minor trouble early on, allowing a near-sack to Kawann Short, but he and Joseph Noteboom settled in and really opened up some big running lanes for Todd Gurley and Malcolm Brown.

It’s only one game, but perhaps the offensive line won’t be as big of an issue as some have made it out to be.

Dud: Every special teams unit
John Fassel’s unit has to get things together before next week because it was a disappointing performance from an otherwise-reliable unit. Johnny Hekker had a punt blocked and another one went for just 7 yards. Greg Zuerlein missed a 40-yard field goal badly and also pulled one of his kickoffs out of bounds. JoJo Natson fielded a punt inside the 5-yard line and returned it for just 3 yards, too.

There’s a lot of room for improvement within this unit after Sunday’s game.

I am sick and tired of hearing how, "Donald didn't have a good game".

He was constantly double-teamed and tying up two offensive lineman or an offensive lineman and a tight end.

Every time Fowler was getting pressure or a sack it was because of Aaron Donald's work.

Dante played as well as I thought he would. I really do think he is going to have a breakout year. What they need is some pressure from the other side. I'm sorry Brockers and Fox aren't going to get it done. They need to play Ogbo opposite Fowler. They made it easy for the Panthers who only had to focus on AD and Fowler. It wasn't good enough last year. McVay needs to turn his dogs loose. Its freaking obvious that Brockers is not an outside pass rusher. He should be in rotation with AD at 3T.

Ebukam outplayed Mathews at OLB. Clay's sack was a gift
IMO it doesn't matter how long Weddle is going to be out. Rapp showed he's a starter now.

This is what I mean about how McVay needs to turn the dogs loose. Play Gaines, Rapp, and Ogbo for God's sake. That's why they drafted them remember? SJD and Brockers were getting blown up on run plays. The replay clearly showed SJD getting blown off the LOS on one of the TDs.

I'm throwing out a dud for Coach McVay. Didn't seem like the best play calls. Would of liked to see more plays to tight ends, who did well when the ball was thrown they're way. Game management wasn't stellar either. And, why bring in Henderson for his first play as a pro on the goal line. Gurley, and Brown, were rolling well...why Henderson then?

I'm throwing out a dud for Coach McVay.
I think he had two brilliant ideas that actually helped us win the game.

He tried to give the impression that Gurley was injured by using Malcolm Brown extensively in the first half.

The next thing you know Gurley is running all over them in the second half, fresh as a daisy.

He also ran the Carolina defense ragged in the first half trying to chase down pass receivers.

Carolina looked wore down and that is why they couldn't handle Gurley in the second half.

He also used the first half to get Goff in sync with his receivers better.

It all bodes well for our next game.

NFL Week 1 PFF ReFocused: Los Angeles Rams 30, Carolina Panthers 27

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams’ passing game started off hot, but it struggled down the stretch and that ultimately kept the Panthers in the game. Jared Goff seemed to struggle under pressure as he missed a number of open targets when his protection collapsed.

Aaron Donald had a quiet game, but Dante Fowler caused problems all game long. He picked up two sacks and showed good bend off the edge.

This was a tale of two halves for the offensive line. The first half was a huge struggle, especially for center Brian Allen and right tackle Rob Havenstein, but the zone-running game settled them down in the second half as the team’s running back committee took advantage of cutback lanes.

I'm not great with stat finding online. Can anyone tell me our breakdown of offensive formations yesterday? I was seeing a helluva lot more 4 WR and even 5 WR sets yesterday. Overall the formations seemed balanced comparatively to the last 2 years.
