Recapping NFC West first-round picks in 2021 NFL Draft

While we wait until Day 2 for the Rams' turn to be on the clock in the 2021 NFL Draft, here's how the rest of the NFC West used its Day 1 picks.

Note: Like the Rams, the Seahawks won't be picking until Day 2 this year after trading their 2021 first-round pick to the Jets as part of the package for safety Jamal Adams.

San Francisco 49ers

Owners of the highest overall selection among NFC West teams in this year's draft, the 49ers took North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance with the No. 3 pick.

Though the FCS elected to postpone its football season to the spring, the redshirt sophomore Lance still managed to play in one game after the Bison were able to schedule Central Arkansas in early October. In that contest, he completed 15 of 30 pass attempts for 149 yards, two touchdowns and one interception a 39-28 North Dakota State win, also rushing 15 times for 143 yards and two touchdowns.

As a redshirt freshman in 2019, he averaged 9.7 yards per pass attempt (second in the FCS) and completed 66.9 percent of his attempts (fifth) while not throwing a single interception. He also posted 169 carries for 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns – his 6.5 yards per carry 10th-most in the FCS – on his way to winning the Jerry Rice Award (top freshman in the FCS) and the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Year award.

Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals elected to add to their defense, selecting Tulsa linebacker Zaven Collins with the No. 16 overall pick.

A three-year starter, Collins capped off his career winning the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (best defensive player in college football, presented by Charlotte Touchdown Club), the Chuck Bednarik Award (best defensive player in college football, presented by Maxwell Football Club) and the Lombardi Award (best college football player, regardless of position, based on performance, as well as leadership, character, and resiliency) after tallying 53 total tackles (11.5 for loss), 4 sacks, 4 interceptions, 2 pass breakups, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery and 1 safety in 8 games during his 2020 redshirt junior season.

Les Snead previews Day 2 of 2021 NFL Draft

The first round of the 2021 NFL Draft came and went Thursday night with several skill position players coming off the board.

Did that create more opportunity on offense or defense for the Rams, who are scheduled to make their first selection at No. 57 overall in the second round Friday night?

"It's interesting when you're picking in the 50s like we are, there's still a lot of people on the board, both sides of the ball right now," Snead said during a video conference with reporters Thursday night. "But we're still how many picks away? I mean, that board, it'll get wiped out pretty quick. So it'll be interesting once we get in and around our pick, right? What runs occurred at what positions, and what side of the ball may have a stronger player. So we're going try to prepare for multiple positions. That's what you have to do when you pick at 57, unless you're going to attack and be aggressive and go get someone."

Based on Snead's additional comments, the Rams seem content to wait until it's their turn, or potentially trade back instead of trading up as they determine where that opportunity is.

"We talked through multiple scenarios, so the board's set up and it will be a guide, North Star for us tomorrow," Snead said.

Many talented players at edge, linebacker, and cornerback – widely regarded by experts as positions of need for the Rams – remain on the board heading into Day 2 of the draft, including Georgia edge Azeez Ojulari, LSU linebacker Jabril Cox, Missouri linebacker Nick Bolton, Ohio State linebacker Pete Werner and Florida State cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. Cox, Bolton, Werner and Samuel showed up as possible Rams targets throughout this year's mock draft cycle.

If Los Angeles does decide to trade back, Snead anticipates getting phone calls about pick 88 or pick 103.

"That's usually, historically, where you get a lot of calls as teams want to jump up into the bottom of the third (round) instead of waiting until Saturday to make that pick. That's usually a busy area as well, when you're picking in the late-third (round)."

Similar to previous years, the Rams are content patiently waiting.

"As it gets closer to 57, there will be a good feel for how the board's falling, if it's falling the way we prefer or not," Snead said.

Snead to work draft remotely

As Snead evaluates the direction the Rams will take in Rounds 2 and 3, as well as the remainder of this year's draft, he will be doing so remotely from the garage of his own home after testing positive for COVID-19 Thursday morning.

Snead said he's experiencing mild symptoms. He said had already received his first vaccination shot and was scheduled to get his second early next week, but that will now be delayed as a result of testing positive. Though he is disappointed, he otherwise feels good.

Snead said members of the Rams' Information Technology staff came by his house to strengthen his WiFi and help him remain connected to the team's draft operation.

The team said Rams head coach Sean McVay, who was also identified as a close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week, tested negative today.

Smells like a trade down from R2.57.
Usually there is a hint of honesty in what Snead and co say. They've said there are no immediate needs. If they want to add some depth in the form of mid round picks, I'm good with that.

Would like to see Tremble, Khyris, Green, Schwarz, and McGrone in blue and gold in the 3rd to 5th rounds.

To me, our 3rd CB is our biggest and most glaring need. Unless they know something about David Long that I do not, which seems to not be the case as he rarely ever played. If we take a nickel CB at #57, solid chance they are starting and playing major minutes. I can completely imagine that they think they are getting a starting Center from in house (Anchrum, Shelton, Allen), but I have a hard time believing that our starting nickel CB is already on the team. We have a total of 4 CB's under contract (Ramsey, DW, Deayon, Long). I know they had visions of Burgess playing that role at one point, but, with the loss of JJ, I think he'll be playing a lot of safety.

No immediate needs is a relative term. Technically they could play a season with the current roster. But there are definitely positions that could be upgraded. Some that really need to be upgraded.

The Rams have no holes. They have areas of weakness. I'd be surprised if they don't trade out and fortify depth and buy insurance for future losses. That's been the blueprint.

Only one team in the NFL has traded its original draft picks more than the Los Angeles Rams since 2016: the Patriots. That’s evidence of just how often Les Snead likes to trade the Rams’ picks, whether it’s to go up and get a player they covet or to move back when the board doesn’t fall their way.

Heading into Day 2 of the draft, there are several options for the Rams when it comes to trading both up and down the board. Might they jump 10-15 spots for a player they viewed as a first-round prospect? Or could they trade back from No. 57 to the third round in an attempt to add picks?

Here are seven possible scenarios using the Rich Hill trade value chart to gauge the point total of each pick.

1
Trade up to No. 45

Rams trade: Nos. 57 and 103 (133 points)
Jaguars trade: No. 45 (131 points)

If a player such as Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Teven Jenkins, Azeez Ojulari or even Asante Samuel Jr. were to fall past the first 10 picks of the second round, the Rams should consider moving up. Owusu-Koramoah would be an especially great pick for Los Angeles, giving Raheem Morris a versatile, rangy defender to deploy either at inside linebacker, safety, blitzing off the edge or matching up with tight ends.
Giving up a third-rounder might be tough for the Rams to do, but the payoff would be huge if they could land Owusu-Koramoah, a talented tackle like Jenkins or one of the top pass rushers in Ojulari.

2
Trade up to No. 51

Rams trade: Nos. 57 and 141 (112 points)
Washington trades: No. 51 (112 points)

It’s unlikely the aforementioned players would be available at this point, but it still makes for a good trade-up spot. Washington would like to add mid-round picks and for the Rams, they could go up for a player such as Dillon Radunz, Creed Humphrey, Samuel Cosmi or Joseph Ossai.
It may not be worth it for Los Angeles to give up its fourth-rounder, widening the gap from its third-rounder (103) to its sixth (209), but it should still be in consideration if the right player is there.

3
Trade down to No. 64

Rams trade: Nos. 57 (96 points)
Buccaneers trade: Nos. 64 and 137 (97 points)

Trading down is a much more likely scenario for the Rams, who only have six picks to work with. The Buccaneers don’t have any pressing needs and could be in a position to trade up for a player they covet at the end of the second round. The Rams pick up another fourth-rounder, giving them an extra top-150 pick to use on a linebacker, receiver or defensive lineman later on in the draft.

4
Trade down to No. 75

Rams trade: No. 57 (96 points)
Cowboys trade: Nos. 75 and 99 (100 points)

This would be a steeper move back, sliding 18 spots. But in doing so, the Rams would net an additional top-100 pick at No. 99. They would then have picks at 75, 88, 99 and 103. With those selections, the Rams could do some serious damage on the second night of the draft. The Cowboys traded down in Round 1 and picked up No. 84 in the process, so they could be looking to trade back up for a player in the second round.

5
Trade down to No. 85

Rams trade: No. 57 (96 points)
Titans trade: Nos. 85, 100 and 166 (95 points)

A 28-pick trade back? Fans would probably be disappointed, putting the Rams’ first pick at No. 85, but it would also give them even more ammo in the third through fifth rounds. Los Angeles doesn’t currently have a fifth-round pick, so there’s a gap from No. 141 to 209. The 166th pick could bridge that gap and help the Rams draft a player they like in the middle of Day 3.

6
Trade down from No. 88 to 106

Rams trade: No. 88 (47 points)
Jaguars trade: Nos. 106 and 145 (48 points)

What if the Rams keep No. 57 and instead trade back from pick 88? Les Snead said the team expects to get calls about its third-rounders, so here’s one scenario to fit that idea. The Jaguars would be moving up 18 spots to secure a player in Round 3 before the end of Day 2, rather than having to wait until the first pick on Saturday.

7
Trade down from No. 103 to 118

Rams trade: No. 103 (37 points)
Chargers trade: Nos. 118 and 159 (36 points)

Trading down from No. 103 is also a possibility if a team wants to make one of the final picks on Friday night. The Chargers have a strong roster already and might see a player they really want slip to the end of the third round. This is another scenario where the Rams could add a fifth-round pick that they currently lack without moving back too far from Round 3 to 4.

The pick has to be Landon Dickerson if the medical report is passable, right? I mean - we have to trust our doctor on it - but it feels like a pretty good roll of the dice.
