Has Williams always been that blitz-happy? Im young enough to only know what he has done with NO's defense lol.

I wonder if his style in NO was based upon the offense. What I mean by that is he knows the offense can go out there and score with anybody, so his goal is to put a ton of pressure on opposing QBs and force turnovers. When that worked well, they won a SB. Id have to believe that he could change his approach with Fisher. We have 2 young stud DEs to build around. NO never had that. They couldnt rely on the 4-man rush. Im pretty sure Roman Harper led the team in sacks this season.

We blitzed a ton. Probably top 5 in the league in number of blitzes. We finished 20th in sacks. I think the Rams probably do have better personnel, but Gregg Williams also had a ton of influence in the personnel decisions, especially regarding defense.

Gregg Williams, IMO, is a completely Average NFL defensive coordinator, nowhere near deserving of his reputation. And his decision-making in the last four minutes of the SF playoff game, may be the worst coaching moves in recent history.

The Saints built their offense around late round draft picks, the D always drafted players in the first and second round.

2011

1st Round - Cameron Jordan (DE)
3rd Round - Johnny Patrick (CB)
Martez Wilson (LB)

2010

1st Round - Patrick Robinson

2009

1st Round - Malcolm Jenkins

Free Agents

Shaun Rogers, Abrayu Franklin, etc.

It's a mistake to allow coaches that much input on personnel decisions. As a GM once said, coaches scout 1 month a year, scouts scout 12. No wonder the Saints D has such mediocre personnel. Same thing happened with Lovie Smith in St. Louis. He started off fine with a lot of inherited players from the Vermeil years but the more he had to play his own handpicked FAs and draft choices the worse they got.

Wms. does better with better personnel. Hopefully with the Rams he won't be picking them.

You could make the argument that Dick Lebeau coached a worse game against Denver. Does that make him a bad coach? Players have to make plays, or coaches will get the criticism.

That is a concern at the moment, with Fisher hand-picking the guy who hand-picks the players (GM). Is this GM just going to be a figurehead while he and his coaches tell him who to draft? Is there any reason to believe that's NOT going to be the case?

Not a concern since JF has the final say....and JF won't be delegating the defense to the degree the offense and SFs. IOW our defense will be better......much better.

Well to be fair it worked that way with Vermeil and Armey (Armey was Vermeil's handpicked guy too). So that can work.

But so far history has demonstrated that we don't want GW handpicking his guys.
