As a multimedia engineer, there's another part to this uni thing...
Wanting the uniforms to POP on screen.
Details aren't important, but how color is managed in the current digital workflow means something and affects the choices people will make.
As much as I love the old White and Navy's, many digital tvs and other devices struggle with black levels due to the backlighting. One of the bits of snobbery that kept plasma tvs around as long as they were around was the superior black levels which you'd think only makes a huge difference in film as tv is generally shot to be much brighter, but it also affects sports a great deal.
Look at the Giants' uniforms as compared to ours. Their blue seems dull and lifeless and ours pops. Darker shades tend to lack the dynamic range outside of very expensive TVs, even today. I dunno if you've noticed, but the blue of their unis has lightened and become a bit more neon than when LT played. Especially the helmets. There's a reason for that.
The way the broadcast cameras handle blues and reds, especially, matters a ton.
Reds are WAY oversaturated (oversaturated means they are too bright and they bleed into surrounding pixels...think of a kid coloring with a red crayon outside the lines) whereas the blues are much crisper.
This interplay and balance is one of the reasons we see tons of red/blue offsets usually with blue being a predominant color with red being a highlight color. CNN, for example. has that red BREAKING NEWS chiron running all the time and that red has to be desaturated quite a bit in order to not create tons of other problems.
The warmer colors...red, orange, yellow... they can easily be oversaturated. I just recently saw an example of the yellow with some Laker highlights... the yellow was so oversaturated that I couldn't make out the writing on the jerseys. I think the Lakers current unis need a tad desaturation of their yellow as it's brighter than the Showtime Lakers by a little bit.
Anyway, I know there are issues with the colors, but I think they're serving their purpose well.
The Rams unis POP, even when they play in the bone unis. The off-white is perfect in that it creates the contrast between it and the green field, but it's not so stark that it's off-putting.
I don't like the color rush blueberry look as with contrasting pants the dark unis, there can be tracking issues watching players (or maybe I just have old eyes...either way, I don't like them).
The blue jerseys with the yellow pants? Now that's gonna POP and in the new stadium, they are gonna look DY-NO-MITE!!!!
