Los Angeles Wildcats vs. New York Guardians

Week 4 of the 2020 XFL season kicks off with two teams searching for a big win. The New York Guardians host the Los Angeles Wildcats (both are 1-2) with each team needing a win for different reasons. The Guardians need to break a two-game losing streak, while the Wildcats are looking to start a winning streak.

In Week 3, the Wildcats posted their first win of the season by shocking the visiting DC Defenders to the tune of 39-9. The 30-point margin is the largest win of the season thus far. Josh Johnson has established himself as one of the better quarterbacks in the league after missing the season opener.

The Guardians are hoping that a return to MetLife Stadium will get them back on track. Back in Week 1 on their home field, the Guardians put the hammer to the still-winless Tampa Bay Vipers, 23-3. But since then, the Guardians have taken to the road, they've struggled on both sides of the ball, and the free fall is evident with them outscored 56-9. I expect this to be a hard-hitting game.

Los Angeles at New York

Kickoff: Saturday, Feb. 29 at 2 p.m. ET
Where: MetLife Stadium (East Rutherford, N.J.)
TV: ABC
Spread: Wildcats -7

Three Things to Watch

1. Josh Johnson steadies the ship

Johnson missed the Week 1 opener at Houston due to injury. In that game, the combination of Charles Kanoff and Jalan McClendon combined to complete just 22-of-43 passes for 214 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Los Angeles was held scoreless in the second half of that game. But since Johnson took over in Week 2, the Wildcats have been much more efficient. The 12-year NFL veteran is completing 61 percent of his passes (36-of-59) for 474 yards and five touchdowns with no picks.

Johnson leads the XFL with 8.0 yards per attempt, has only taken two sacks (tied for second), and has a 114.7 passer rating (second in the league). If Johnson stays healthy, then the Wildcats have a chance to pick up some wins down the stretch due to his efficiency. Thanks in large part to Johnson's efforts, the Wildcats rank second in both total points scored (74) and points per game (24.7).

2. The Guardians have a revolving door at quarterback

Inconsistency, and more recently Matt McGloin's chest injury, has plagued Kevin Gilbride's offense. McGloin along with Marquise Williams and Luis Perez have combined to complete 52 percent of the team's pass attempts for 494 yards and two touchdowns. McGloin has thrown two interceptions, and as a group, this unit has taken six sacks; they're constantly under pressure, and they have a team passer rating of 63.1. McGloin has been a limited participant in practice this week, so there's a chance not that he might not play. But if the Guardians want to get back in the win column, then they need to find some stability for an offense that ranks last in total points scored (32).

3. Defense could decide this game

The conclusion of this game could be decided by a defensive stop or two. Both teams haven't exactly been the most defensively savvy this season, but they will need to make an effort in this department in order to win on Saturday. After limiting the Vipers to a field goal in their opener, the Guardians have since given up 56 points (6 touchdowns, a two-point conversion, 6 field goals), they've allowed their opponents to gain 645 yards of total offense, and they only have one takeaway. And despite the Wildcats' competitive style of play over these last two weeks, they still allow the second-most points per game (23.7), the second-most yards per game (349.7), and the second-most total points this season (71).

Final Analysis

Both teams are coming into this game with some sense of urgency. But with the Wildcats having more stability on offense, and with the Guardians' recent struggles on defense, I see the Wildcats leaving MetLife Stadium with the win.

Prediction: Wildcats 24, Guardians 17

Seattle Dragons vs. St. Louis BattleHawks

After a two-game homestand, the Seattle Dragons will hit the road to America’s heartland where they will take on the St. Louis BattleHawks on Saturday afternoon at The Dome at America’s Center. These two teams have hosted the three highest-attended XFL games, which is giving the league a nice boost.

Seattle (1-2) got off to a great start last week against the Dallas Renegades when they jumped out to a 12-6 halftime lead. However, the Dragons couldn’t finish and were shut out in the second half for a 24-12 loss, their second straight defeat. Seattle's offense was still too one-dimensional, with only 99 rushing yards. That was not enough to slow a Renegades offense that took off in the second half. Brandon Silvers took a step forward, completing 62 percent of his passes while throwing for two touchdowns to just one interception. But the defense took a step back by surrendering 374 total yards, including 274 through the air by Landry Jones.

The chants of "Kroenke sucks" bellowed through the crowd on Sunday — referencing the Rams owner who moved their NFL team to Los Angeles — as St. Louis welcomed back pro football to their city. On the field, the BattleHawks (2-1) crushed the New York Guardians 29-9 in front of 29,554 fans, good for the largest crowd of the XFL season to date. Quarterback Jordan Ta'amu was efficient throwing the ball, going 12-of-19 for 119 yards. Matt Jones and Christine Michael took care of business on the ground by helping sustain drives for St. Louis and keeping their defense fresh. The defense won the turnover battle, got off the field on third down, and forced New York to play a trio of quarterbacks that was unable to find any rhythm all day long.

Seattle at St. Louis

Kickoff: Saturday, Feb. 29 at 5 p.m. ET
Where: The Dome at America's Center
TV: Fox
Spread: BattleHawks -8.5

Three Things to Watch

1. Seattle offense

Offensive coordinator Mike Riley and head coach Jim Zorn will need to establish the running game right away on Saturday. The Dragons' offense can ill afford to get themselves into 3rd-and-long situations against an aggressive BattleHawks defense. The offensive line is expected to have Isaiah Battle back this week at tackle, which should only enhance the running game.

Establishing the run and sticking with it would allow Seattle to not have to deal with eight or nine guys in the box. The play-action pass will also become more effective as well. The Dragons will also get Reuben Mwehla back at wide receiver, and he had opened some eyes during minicamp.

2. St. Louis' defensive mindset

Stopping the Dragons' running game is going to be very important on Saturday since the BattleHawks will need to force Brandon Silvers to beat them with his arm. St. Louis did allow New York to rush for 112 yards on 21 carries (5.3 ypc), but Will Clarke, Andrew Ankrah, and Casey Sayles all registered a sack against the Guardians. Sayles also went viral when he traded an XFL football to a young female fan in the stands who offered up a box of Girl Scout cookies as trade bait.

The ability to generate a consistent pass rush against Silvers will allow the secondary to go to work with press coverage. Austin Proehl and Keenan Reynolds are two quality pass-catching weapons for Seattle and have combined for 21 receptions for 291 yards and four touchdowns. Keep an eye on the battle of Proehl, and Reynolds against safety Will Hill (6 tackles) and cornerback Darius Hillary (2 pass breakups), who had big performances last week.

3. Special teams

One aspect of the XFL that has caught the attention of football fans around the world has been their approach to kickoffs. There have been plenty of long kickoff returns, and last week, the BattleHawks broke through with a kickoff return for a touchdown. Joe Powell took a lateral from Keith Mumphery all the way for a 90-yard touchdown that really electrified the crowd.

This type of success in the kicking game for St. Louis is only going to make them even more dangerous for opposing teams to deal with. Taylor Russolino took advantage of playing indoors by drilling a 58-yard field goal that extended the BattleHawks lead to 26-3. Russolino’s leg strength should take some pressure off of the offense when they are at home since they can aggressively attempt long field goals. Seattle will need to play with an extra level of discipline in the kicking game this week, as St. Louis is a definite threat to break a game open on special teams.

Final Analysis

Both defenses will play well early, keeping the overall point total down and the under (39 point) in play betting-wise. Home-field advantage has been an important factor after three weeks, as home teams are 8-4. St. Louis should have another strong crowd that will be ready to continue to make a statement that they are all in on supporting their team. The BattleHawks' offensive line is going to win enough battles at the line of scrimmage against the Seattle defense to allow the offense to pull away late. St. Louis will pick up its third win of the season since the BattleHawks have a few more playmakers on offense to get the job done in front of their rabid fans.

Prediction: BattleHawks 24, Dragons 15

The St. Louis BattleHawks will destroy the Seattle Dragons, it will not be close. I expect the dome to be rocking again and maybe they will even open the upper tiers to the dome and have even more fans when they had close to 30,000 last week.

St. Louis is one of the most complete teams in the XFL with their running game in Matt Jones & Christine Michael combined with the dual threat of Quarterback Jordan Ta'amu will be far too much for Seattle with a coaching staff of Dumb & Dumber in Offensive Coordinator Mike Riley and Head Coach Jim Zorn.

Head Coach Jonathan Hayes, his brother Defensive Coordinator Jay Hayes and Offensive Coordinator Chuck Long, IMHO, is the best Coaching Staff in the XFL and with a galvanized city behind them the sky is the limit for BattleHawk Nation.

I think I’ve seen each of the teams play more than once.

The BattleHawks are one of the better teams, for sure.

No Sir @CGI_Ram they are the best team and the Houston Roughnecks were very fortunate to win that game in Houston, when they travel to the Gateway City they will be overwhelmed bringing June Jones back to his days of Quarterbacking the Atlanta Falcons and being under siege.

Wow. Gutsy call on 4th & 2 deep in your own territory, but they pulled it off.

Then, how nice was that long touchdown?

We have a ball game...go Wildcats!
